Angry Chinchilla about Cage
« on: November 12, 2012, 11:35:54 AM »

Hi everyone, last night my chinchilla (8 months old) kept making the distressed barking noise repeatedly. I changed her food, her water, and her hay to see if that could be the issue. It didn't stop. I thought she might be sick, but she looked fine and her droppings looked fine as well.

Then, I decided to clean her cage as there were more poops than usual on all her platforms. It was dirtier than I would usually let it get. As soon as I cleaned it, she instantly seemed more happy, energetic, and hasn't made the sound since.

My question is, could my chinchilla seriously have been that sensitive and angry to the amount of her own poop that was in the cage?

Probably not.  :)  But chinchillas will fuss if they want to play.  They will also fuss if they smell new smells. (candles, a visitor who is a smoker, new perfume, etc.)

When is the last time you sprayed or disinfected the cage?
Also, was she in the cage while you cleaned it? Maybe she interpreted this as playtime and therefore became calmer.
