This cage won't work right?
« on: May 06, 2012, 10:36:20 AM »

So im getting 2 chins from someone on craigslist who was threatening to set them loose if no one came to get them. Because her daughter doesn't take care of them, So im going to be taking them in, earlier than I planned on getting chins but oh well they need me and it only moves up my plans by a month or so....

Anyways they are coming with what looks to be this cage: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4191242&lmdn=Small+Pet

at least when she sent me pics thats what it looked like.... This is not suitable for to chins is it? I mean it will have to work for now, because she wanted some money to recupe her costs so i don't have the money to make or buy the cage I want with the cost of getting them from her.

Im hoping to have a new cage set up in a month or so I have awesome DIY plans. I want to make a DIY cage  out of this: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202067995/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=ur-185WGB&storeId=10051#BVRRWidgetID

but will that cage do till I can do that?

That cage should be fine for chinchillas depending on what the floor in made of. Solid floor or 1/2 x 1/2 inch wire is fine.  2 foot squared in all that is required for a pair of chinchillas, although we all know the bigger the better.  :)

That's right. This cage is too small! I had one like that when I first got my little guy. He was just a baby so it worked for a couple of months or less. It's way too small for 2 chins. Also, the ramps are mesh and if I'm remembering correctly, so are the shelves. Wire flooring/ramps can result in bumble foot (not good), and some wire ramps will allow their little feet to get caught and could end in an amputated foot! The five foot high ferret nation cage isn't that costly and the ramps come with covers. You just need to wrap the two, half shelves with felt so they don't chew the edges. Felt makes am awesome bedding for the chins. they don't chew or ravel it and it cleans Jo so easily

The ramps and shelfs are actually solid metal, and as soon as I can I am going to upgrade these guys :)
