Need advice pretty quick.....
« on: May 19, 2010, 04:44:13 PM »

My wife let the chin out in the bathroom, which is her play area, and well, she didnt get to close the toilet in time.. and yes, she jumped right in there.... will her hair dry out on its own and be ok? right now, shes using a soft washcloth and gently "petting" her with it... any suggestions??? ( btw, the toilet was clean.. cleaned it 2 hours ago )

Well better late than never...I searched past threads and found someone asking a simular question on wet chin. And felt that JoAnn answered your question rather well.

You do not want the chin to chill from getting wet, but you also do not want it to die of a heat stroke from the dryer.

#1  If a chinchilla gets wet accidentally, wrap it in paper towels (they absorb liquid faster and better than cloth), constantly replacing the paper towels with dry ones.

#2  Then cuddle your chin in a towel, exposing small parts to a hand held dryer ON THE LOWEST heat and blow settings.

#3  Hold the dryer about 12" from the chin and keep the dryer moving from side to side, constantly.  DO NOT OVER HEAT.

#4  Do this in a small room, such as the bathroom that will keep it out of a draft and be warm enough (with out over heating) at the same time.  A chinchilla must be completely dry before putting it back in it's cage ... all fur must be soft and fluffy ... a sign that it is or is almost dry.

#5  You might want to let it play in the room for a little while before taking it into another cooler room.

Ways not to get your chin wet:
1) toilet lid closed at all times
2) no water standing in the sink or bathtub
3) no open drinks in the room when the chin is out playing
4) no water guns allowed in the same room

   Jo Ann

P. S.  You can find spray cans of saline for small areas that may need to be cleaned.  This way your little one does not have to be wet all over.

My only concern is...what did you use to clean the toilet with...and could there be residue of that chemical still in the toilet... :-\

Your welcome...When one is stressing it's hard to think of using the search engine.

The topic of what do when a chin would get wet. Would come in handy as a "sticky" so others could possilby find it easier.  Maybe someone might see this and agree and do just that.

A hair dryer helps when chins get wet.
It's been awhile for me but I had a bad case of gardia way back and had to wash a couple from the waist down.
Well they loved the hair dryer. :2funny:

Gardia...my dog had that once I think. I first thought he was going to die...but luckily that was all it was. Wow...I hadn't realised chinchillas could get it.

its hard to believe a chin wouldn't mind a hair dryer.. crack me up..  you are not the first person i heard saying that...

but one of mine also got in the toilet once.. you are so darn careful.. but it just takes one quick second.. wow.. and they are that quick...

gladhe's okay.

It was kinda weird. She didn't seem to mind the water too much. She just jumped back out and started to shake off. Then I guess there was a but of sand left in the carpet after we vacuumed their room, and she started to roll in it like a wet dog does.
