Rescue Questions?
« on: May 08, 2010, 11:26:45 PM »

I am interested in saving a few chins. How do you guys that do rescues go about finding them? Ive looked on craigslist and everybody seems to want to turn a profit on them. Im willing to pay some but not full breeder retail. any advice you have, please tell

Petfinder actually has some pretty good adoptions up.  Search for small and furry, in the first drop down.  Type in chinchilla in the breed, then type in your zip.  Should link you to the adoptions nearest you!  :::grins::

Do you want to adopt a chinchilla in need or start a rescue?

mainly adopt in need for right now, see how it goes, then maybe move up. I have a nearby vet and she has 8 chins i believe, so she is skilled in their health. ive learned alot from her. im not just searching for one cuz i want another pet, i just dont want one to suffer

That's quite valiant!  As soon, as I can get a bigger place I would like to do the same thing!

I built a new cage over the weekend, its all made out of untreated pine, it is 24" wide, 48" long, and 60" high. so ill be able to fit a few in there together, if they decide to like eachother. I got a week of vacation coming up at the end of May, so im gonna try to do it that week, so i can watch them argue from cage to cage.

Wow, excellent cage. I saved three chins. Just look up "chinchilla fur Farm." In thge location of your city and someothing should come up. I saved Candy from being made into a fur coat. The other two were in small cages, unclean conditions, had parasites, it was disgusting and he did breeding runs and breed back. Horrible experience. He must have had 300 chins, no kidding. Also go down to your local shelter, they may have a chinchilla in need of a home there.

Large breeders are not bad.  I do breeding runs and will soon have over 500 chinchillas.  I still love them and care for them.  :)

Ya, I found out after the fact. i bought a wheel off of qualitycages.com and its on its way, amazingly, she hasnt touched the wheel, but the little hey feeder has some marks on it, and its coming out as well. As soon as I find a metal one of some sort.

Thank you Courtney, i will check that out.

it wasnt really hard at all, it just took time. I drew at all out of paper first and went from there. If you wish, i can take more exact pics of the cage and explain how i did all of it. just building the cage, it cost me about $200. worthy investment in my mind tho. Its all about the chins
