Are both parents violet or sapphire carriers? because if they are not your baby cannot be a violet or sapphire. I would guess your baby is likely a light tan. Chinchillas do not just randomly produce violets or sapphires.

::silly::  When crossing an ebony with a beige, you usually get a tan.  Shades can vary from light tan to dark tan.   But, you can also get a standard gray.  Regardless of the color of tan, hetro ebony or standard gray, it and future generations should be listed as a possible ebony carriers.  The reason for this is because ebonies have the rap-a-round color and not the white belly.  At any time in the future, that ebony may show back-up as what is commonly referred to as a 'dirty-belly' (not the pure white that is desirable).  This is why the ebony is often referred to as a "wild card" in genetics.

:)  What are the grand parents of this kit?  (I am referring to color.)

A good light tan is sometimes mistaken for a violet ... depending on the lighting and knowledge of the person.  If you have a true pure violet or sapphire, take them into the natural sunlight and place them side by side with the new kit ... you should notice the difference right off the bat.

Floresent lighting can really fool you with many colors ... natural lighting is the best.   :::grins::

A cross between a hetero-ebony and a homo-beige will produce light to medium tans, or hetero-beiges.  Violet and sapphire are recessive genes, so your kit could not be either of those unless both parents are carriers of the genes.
To figure out which of the possibilities your kit is, look at the belly.  If his belly is white he is a hetero-beige, but if it's not then he is a tan.  The ebony gene causes the color from the back to wrap around the entire body, so the tan's belly will be the same as the rest of his body.

::silly::  He is cute!!! What color is his belly?  Is it white or is it the same color as the rest of him?

If it is the same color, then he is a tan.

If it is a white belly, then he is not a tan, he would most likely be a beige, but he would also be a carrier of the ebony gene.  (hetro beige/ebony carrier)

The family history will confirm or eliminate different color possibilities.  This is why family history is so important to know.

Where did you get the parents of this kit?

his belly isn't white but its not quite as dark as the top his father was a gift my husband got him off of a friend who had one pair and he was the baby but i'm not sure what the fathers parents were and we have since moved so getting in touch is nearly impossible the mother (medium ebony or so i think anyway) i bought off of a small breeder about 45 min away her parents were both dark but not as dark as a dark ebony one of them could have been a v/c.

::silly::  More than likely he is a tan IF the mother is an ebony.   :)   You might want to touch base with the breeder of the "ebony"  and get the family history on her.

You would have to be positive about the violet in the family history before you could even list this kit as a "possible violet carrier".  The family history on a chinchilla is extremely important.

If the mother is an ebony and the belly is an off white or lighter than the back and sides, you could have a beige/ebony carrier with a 'dirty belly'.

::think::  This is what happens when people put to many different colors together in the same family line ... you never quite know what you have.   ::think::
