is chinchilla blind (new owner)

We have had our chinchilla for 3 weeks now and I think he is blind.. When he is out of his cage and running crazy he seems to run into the walls or objects alot, he usually doesnt see your hand until its about 4 inches from him.

he might have some vision trouble but as i understand it chins dont have good depth perception . I recently took on a blind rat and it was easy to tell he was blind . You might try it ... push you had real fast towards his face but dont hit him or touch him . if he doesnt flinch there is a good chance he might be blind.

Hi--Does your chin seem to have any discoloration either in one eye or the other or both?   Do they look normal?  Was he running around in a room that he is familiar with or was it a new area to him?   Chinchillas do not have good eyesight.  If they are unfamiliar with their surroundings, they may appear to be blind. My daughter has a blind chin & she can put her hand in the cage & the chin does not respond what so ever until she actually touches her fur.  Of course, if she talks to her, she knows she is there.  Her eyes look normal, so I think in this case it is genetic.  I know when they have cataracts their eyes are discolored & look like they have a milky substance on them.  So, it should be decided by a professional I guess to know for sure.     JANE

Your chinchilla is probably fine.  Chinchillas will run by memory more than vision.  It is very common for a chinchilla to run full speed into something, especially if you move something in a room they are used to playing in.   :)

yeah, I also think your chinnie is fine, my ones also run into things when they're put in a new place, or once when I removed a shelf out of their cage they jumped into air a few times, but after few jumps they understood that the shelf is removed ;D

I don't know much about it but I'd try what Deeliteful said.
