URGENT: Dying Chinchilla
« on: December 30, 2007, 09:24:03 AM »

I've been up all night.  I might not be eloquent.

Last night, around 11 pm, I found my 3 year old male chinchilla lying listless in his cage.  It's 10 am now and he's still in the same condition.

SYMPTOMS

- lethargic
- cold body (in particular: ears, nose, paws)
- slightly quicker breathing
- watery eyes
- not eating or drinking

HEALTH (before yesterday night)

His droppings are a pale brown and hard and normal sized.
He's made at least 30 droppings in the last 12 hours.
No changes in the way he ate and drank.
No teeth problems.
No hair rings.
No injuries.
No noted medical conditions.

SELF-DIAGNOSIS: Stress-related shock?

I looked it up on the internet and stress-related shock seemed the best diagnosis.  (Though what the shock was, I have no idea.)I'm still following the instructions, keeping him warm and getting 2 mL of pedialyte in him every 2 hours.  In the last hour, he's just stopped swallowing the pedialyte.

VET?

If he survives the day, I am seeing a vet tomorrow. (No vets today, it's a Sunday.)

HELP PLEASE...

I love my Gizmo so so much, I don't understand how it all happened.  He was always perfectly healthy, up to yesterday night that is. I don't want this to be happening.  I don't want to watch my soul mate die, not this young, not like this!!!!!

Hi,
I'm sorry to hear about your chin. Is there a animal emergency clinic near you that you can take him to? Some help is better than no help.  Good Luck

I am so sorry about your chin. I know you said you are keeping him warm, but are you sure he is not overheating. I would get him to any vet as soon as possible. If his ears are red, you will need to get him cooled off. I have read a lot about how chins will just give up. Try to motivate him to keep going. There is really no way to diagnose what is wrong with him. I wish you all the best! Keep us posted! :'(

Get the chin to the vet today or it will die. More time looking for an emergency vet then looking up what it could be would be better then anything. Have you asked anyone on this site for help finding a vet?  http://www.ontariochinchillas.ca/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=131

Thanks everyone for the quick answers.

Gizmo died a few hours after I posted that message.  I'll never know what happened. Everyone in my family is stunned.  We all loved him way too much.

Also, I'm sorry I haven't posted any update since, but I couldn't bring myself to come on here or do anything that reminded me of him dying.  Alot of people keep telling me he was only an animal, but, seriously, my whole world crashed.  Anyway, I won't bore you with my whining... I'm just letting you know what happened.

Thank you again.  I remember how friendly this board was when I first got Gizmo and it's reassuring to see people on here are still as caring and understanding.

I'm sorry to hear about Gizmo.  I"m sure no one here would tell you he was just an animal.  He was, but the love that you shared with him goes beyond that, and he was part of your family.  Don't let anyone belittle your feelings, they are real, and you should mourn him.

You are in our thoughts tonight.

There is no 'just' about an animal. They are friends, companions, confidants. I'm so sorry you had to lose your friend, I hope your next chin brings as much warmth to your heart and light to your eyes as Gizmo did.
