This might be a stupid questions but how do you breed chinchillas? I was just wondering if they need any specific care to breed them. How many babies do they have? How often do they have babies? Is there a way to keep them from breeding. I was just wondering because i want to get a pair of chinchillas and if i get a male and female they will probably breed.

Yes male and female will breed, brother will breed sister so get two males or two females.  If you have no clue what you are doing you can kill them.

i'll try and get two males but if i did accidently get a male and female i`d probably do fine because before the female gets pregnant i'd read about what to do for the mom and babies for hours

Please make sure that you don't get a male and a female.  If you've never owned chinchillas, starting off with breeding is really not in your (or the chinchillas'!) best interest.

I agree make sure you don't get male and female, So many problems can  and will come up. Think of the animal not yourself.

Also, females need to be at LEAST 8 months old before they are placed in the same cage with a male.  If they are put together earlier and the female gets pregnant she may not be large enough to deliver the babies and without a very quick (and extremely expensive) c-section she and the babies will die.

accidently getting a male and female would mean you'd be too late. Two males would be better for you to live together as a pair and not have to worry about unprepared pregnancy. I have a few that are just over 8 months but I want a little more weight on them before they are mated so we will wait until they are good and ready.

If you are new you want to get your first animals the right way and 2 males would be great. Breeders often will sell animals who have been caged together (of the same sex) as pairs.. which would be the way to go.

OK i already know a breeder i am going to buy my chins. from so i'll ask if he has two males.
