Health / How long does it take fur to grow back?
« on: February 20, 2015, 01:55:04 AM »
Serious this time.

Accidentally stepped on Popsicle's tail a few days ago. No injuries it seems, but massive fur slip on tail, there's a big totally bald patch now (10 square cm area i estimate) He shed a little bit on his back too but that part is unnoticable.

How long will the bald spot remain? Popsicle's dignity has been reduced! :(

My chin took a while to take to his wheel. Also, when I replaced his wheel, he was all like "what's this??? It's not my old wheel!!!" :(

But he loves his wheel... in fact, that's the default form of punishment for him (locking him up doesn't work since he likes his cage/deluxe suite so much and I can't really hit him or starve him right?). When he's naughty I take away his wheel and let him know it's his punishment.

Innocent until proven guilty... sick animals do bite and injure themselves sometimes... ?

The old one had a lot of wear and tear.

The wooden base is pretty important, to keep the wheel at an incline.

Lazy susan's don't come with the wooden base.

General Chat / Re: My chin has a weird humping issue help!!
« on: February 02, 2015, 02:21:42 AM »
Popsicle is weird. He seems to have picked up this humping thing... but he actually knows he shouldn't. Sometimes when resting on my arm, he'll get an erection and start humping, but then he'll stop, look a bit guilty, and then he sticks his penis in his mouth and nibbles it until his erection subsides.
He's only once lost self control and humped my hand to ejaculation.
...
I sort of feel sorry for him and feel maybe it's my fault for not getting him a wife/ girlfriend, so he has to rely on self release... my own teenage years come to mind...

Q & A / Re: How much hay should my chin be eating?
« on: January 27, 2015, 11:56:38 AM »
Bad news and good news and bad news...

Bad news:   Popsicle is not a huge fan of hay, he eats a little though.
Good news: He's found alternatives to wear down his teeth and add fibre to his diet.
Bad news:   It's my furniture. :(

General Chat / Re: How demanding is your chin?
« on: January 27, 2015, 03:39:10 AM »
Oh, when I try to put popsicle back in his cage, he has 2 different reactions. Normally, I just let him sit on my hands, and just put my hands into his cage, above his hammock. Originally, I thought I would just plunk him in his hammock, but he's subverted this ritual:

a) he will sort of gather himself a little, hop over his hammock onto his wooden house, then hop onto his metal house, and sit there looking at me expectantly, where I either go "oh clever boy, went home!" and give him a treat or cuddle.

b) He gathers himself up on his hind legs.... and keeps backed up away from his hammock. And thouroughly communicates his reluctance to go home. At which point I decide whether to extend playtime or not. (usually I give in, which is why he's a pampered chin)

Popsicle doesn't run around and throw tantrums... he strictly sulks, goes unresponsive, shows me his butt, refuses to look at me, etc etc. ...

General Chat / How demanding is your chin?
« on: January 26, 2015, 04:40:10 PM »
Wow... Popsicle is getting... spoilt.

He's a rather atypical chin, for one thing, he LOVES being chased around. It's his game. He loves to have me try to catch him.
And during playtime, if I don't give him enough attention, ie CONSTANT and FULL attention, he can get frustrated and stressed and he will run back into his cage and throw himself into his metal house (he has several houses) and sulk with red ears. At first I thought he was overheating from playing, but after analysis, I noticed his ears don't turn very red from physical activity, but when he gets upset they turn bright red...

Q & A / Re: Stressed chinchilla after moving
« on: January 05, 2015, 01:22:40 PM »
ooh.... the thing about chins is, some of them are pretty social animals... they can get lonely... if your chin is used to having a roommate, and now he's all alone most of the time, AND this coincided with moving to a completely new house... mmm.

Anyhow, may or may not be so. Just be aware that the possibility that he might feel lonely is there, if he behaves unusually you might ask yourself "maybe he's lonely?" and if you realize "yeah, I think he *IS* lonely!" then you will be able to take steps to deal with it.

He's figured out that if he goes after ANY electrical wires he can get me to throw a fit.
It was a bit of a surprise the first time when I was using my mouse and then suddenly the mouse pointer stopped moving lol.
Anyhow, as I said, he does it purely to punish me for giving my attention to the computer during his playtime, he doesn't bite them nowadays since I play continuously with him during playtime. ... he DEFINITELY knows what he's doing... once or twice is coincidence, but his reaction is pretty much immediate and 100% consistent, so there's no mistaking that he's doing it on purpose...

General Chat / Re: I'm Scared, help!

UPDATE: It's been a few days, and my chin and I have bonded. I can pick him upand hold him , but when I hold him, I'm supporting his legs, and holding him properly, but he still kicks and squirms?

TOO MUCH, TOO FAST.

Your chin sounds remarkably easy going if he let's you pick him up and hold him after just a few days of bonding. In fact, it sounds like you're bonding remarkably well if he MERELY kicks and squirms when you hold him, most chins will get traumatised. You're lucky you haven't traumatised him.

SLOW DOWN.

Keep reading and hanging out, but give it at least a few months before you restrain your chin or do anything that "forces" him to do something that he doesn't want to do.

Helpful hint: It's almost always safer to "bribe" or "persuade" a chin to do something, instead of "forcing" him in some way.

General Chat / By Rodent standards, Popsicle is an electrical engineer.
« on: January 05, 2015, 06:40:32 AM »
OK, Popsicle's daily playtime is a bit long for me, so I often let him do his own thing while I use my computer or Ipad etc.
Unfortunatly, Popsicle hates being ignored during playtime, as I found out, so he was aggressively jumping on my keyboard, chewing wires, etc,  no matter how much I scolded him.
In fact, he's figured out that the WIRES are the weak points, and he is now smart enough to concentrate 1 spot and directly bite the wire in half. He killed 3 mouses in 3 days. (computer mouse wire) Of course he got punished for this.
...
And we have finally reached an understanding. If I play with him properly, he behaves himself. If I ignore him during playtime and start using electronic devices, he will RUSH to the wires, find a thin one he can bite in half, and outright snap the wire.
...
Yeah, he's worked out "wire = important part of electronic device". Man...
