General Chat / Oops! I'm a bad daddy...
« on: September 23, 2014, 10:54:27 AM »
So, today Popsicle was nibbling on me and he bit me too hard so I told him "ouch!" and I told him to be more gentle. And he gave me an apologetic look and resumed nibbling MUCH softer, so I petted him and called him good boy.

...

When I shared this incident with my mum, she was like "Shouldn't you teach him not to bite people at all?"

...

DOH!!! Me is a bad parent!!! OOPS!!!

Health / Are peas and tomato juice dangerous for chins?
« on: September 18, 2014, 02:33:32 AM »
I know it's not a good idea to feed that to them, it was an accident.

I was having my dinner, a bowl of baby peas in tomato juice, and I had let Popsicle out to play... then I got distracted by something, and Popsicle for once was very quiet... later I noticed red footprints all over my papers near my half eaten dinner... oh dear... and Popsicle hardly touched his pellets last night and today... oh man... he must have pigged out on that stuff... I know for a fact there's more calories in there than in Hay or Hay Pellets, but how bad is it? I don't know how much he ate either... Well, he seems perfectly normal except for the fact that he didn't eat his pellets...

I hardly have free time, but I'll try to make a vet appointment tomorrow I guess? ... though, by tomorrow, everything would have already gone through his digestive system already, so if no problems come up by tomorrow it's likely that I had a narrow escape?

OK, here's several things I seem to have learnt:

1. Your chin bonds with you faster. Even tons of interaction, he gets used to you pretty fast cause you're sharing living space.

2. Your chin becomes less territorial. You become more of a "family member who lives in the same burrow" rather than "this is my cage, and outside is wilderness.
Popsicle understands that outside the cage is "MY area", and that he's my guest... so, after he gets tired from playing, he goes back to "his area" on his own, he just goes inside his cage when he's done. ... he also doesn't come out of his cage unless I "invite" him, even if I open the cage door and back off, he will wait for me to insert my hand, then hop on it. (but then he immediately bolts off to play hide and seek)

3. Your chin gets less lonely and less bored! ... not so important if you keep a pair or family of chins, but pretty important when it's just 1 guy by himself.

4. Your chin will start thinking of you as "fun" and "interesting"... because you are his source of stimulation and entertainment. This is nice, as people with kids will tell you, being the "fun" parent instead of the "strict, boring" parent feels good!

General Chat / Daddy... help me!!! :( ... lol...
« on: September 16, 2014, 09:49:05 AM »
Egads popsicle is so cute! I had him on my shoulder, gave him a dried strawberry treat... he grabbed it, and did his usual flying leap to his landing base mattress... then he stopped. Looked left. looked right. looked around some more. Then looked at me looking very sad. His eyes were telling me "daddy, I dropped my strawberry!!! Where is my strawberry???" ... helped him find it, and he was so happy. ROFL.

Q & A / Is Talcum Powder safe for Chins?
« on: August 27, 2014, 10:48:26 AM »
I was planning an April Fool prank on Popsicle where I switch his dust bath with talcum powder in his bath house... is this safe? ... will I just get an angry and upset chinchilla?

Health / Chin gave me a scare.
« on: August 16, 2014, 11:03:52 PM »
so I was playing with popsicle, and he went into hide and seek mode and hid in his maze/condo, so I decided to take a bathroom break before he emerged.
As I was closing the bathroom door, I felt resistance. To my horror, Popsicle had tried to follow me in and I had closed the door on him. Not even the far end of the door, he was caught underneath near the middle of the door and the door base.
Freaked out that I had broken his ribs or crushed his internal organs or something. Called around trying to find a 24 hour emergency clinic that would let me x-ray an animal in a human hospital or find a 24 hour vet. Nothing nothing nothing.

He seems ok now though, quite active, so I think he's alright, though that advice about chinchilla's hiding injuries is worrying me a bit, but I think he's back to normal. ...
Pray for popsicle if you're the praying type... thanks all...

General Chat / Anyone here ever seen a chinchilla this fat?

On a sad note, I just checked this person's blog, and the chin in the picture just passed away... oh dear... hope it wasn't due to obesity related health issues...

General Chat / on a scale of 1 to 10, how spoilt is Popsicle?
« on: August 16, 2014, 04:02:17 AM »
oh dear oh dear... my little fella is so like a little kid lol...

During playtime, he wants me to interact with him, not just read something while occasionally cuddling him.

If he feels satisfied, he eventually goes back into his cage, and I give him a rose hip as a treat.

If he doesn't feel satisfied, he goes back into his cage, and SULKS. If I offer him a rose hip, he ignores it! ... there are 2 ways to get him to take his treat at this point:
1. Just put it next to him and go away. He will eat it while I have my back turned, and pretend it disappeared. (as if I'm deaf! Rose hips are crunchy lol)
2. If I tickle and scractch him and tell him how much I love him for a few minutes, he will stop sulking and when I reoffer the rose hip he will sort of grudgingly accept it.

...
Oh dear oh dear, lol...

General Chat / Chinchilla SUPER headbutt!!!
« on: August 07, 2014, 09:47:52 AM »
OUCH.

It was playtime, and I was just minding my own business lying on the floor resting. Popsicle was running around the place playing. All of a sudden, scurry scurry scurry... WHAM. 600g chinchilla evidently did a running leap off the bed and landed face first on MY face. He'd built up enough momentum to actually leave a bruise.
ROFL.

we're both fine though! heh heh.

Q & A / Is Chinchilla food safe for humans?
« on: July 29, 2014, 06:05:28 AM »
I think I hang around Popsicle TOO much... I was wondering whether his food was nice or not, so I crunched one of his pellets. Tastes a bit like spinach.
(chewing hay is something I've seen in too many western movies lol I know it's fine)

General Chat / Well, that was a waste of money.
« on: June 29, 2014, 08:13:04 AM »
I just bought Popsicle a new toy a few days ago.
It was a hay ball, a sort of ball weaved from straw/hay sort of thing, and stuffed full of timothy hay. For rabbits and chinchillas. They're meant to chew it, and reach inside and grab the hay and such I think.
Today, I was like... "where's the ball gone? ... are those long strands of rope looking thing... yup, looks like utter annihilation..."

Popsicle confuses me in certain ways. He likes to deposit unfinished treats and edibles into his food bowl, making me think he recognizes it as his food bowl. ... but he also poops in it a lot. hmm.

General Chat / Giving treats mouth to mouth.
« on: June 24, 2014, 08:06:35 AM »
Am I the only one who does this???

Yeah, I thought mother birds do feed their young mouth to mouth, and so I give Popsicle most of his treats by putting him on my shoulder, then if he behaves himself, I put a treat in my mouth and offer it to him.

Anyone else like to give their chin's treats this way? ;)

General Chat / Can Chinchilla's cross breed with anything? Hybrids?
« on: June 18, 2014, 03:31:41 AM »
Was wondering if Chinchilla's could cross breed with any type of rodent...
It'd be cool if they could, and the resulting hybrid is sterile... that would let Popsicle have a family, AND save me the cost (and save him the trauma) of neutering. Auto family planning!
