Q & A / Mastitis?
« on: September 18, 2011, 04:32:26 PM »
::shrug::  One of Raisin's teats is red. She is not fully tamed so I can't really pick her up to examine her 6 teats.  She is still nursing, but sometimes she protests.  She did it a lot today.  How do I know if she has mastitis or not? She is acting like her normal self.

Q & A / Dusting and weighing
« on: September 15, 2011, 12:40:38 PM »
I have 2 questions.

1 What kind of scale do I use to weigh my kits?

2 One of my kits learned how to take a dust bath, but the other one has no idea what to do and just starts eating it. How can I teach her to take her dust bath?

Health / Giardia
« on: September 14, 2011, 07:38:14 PM »
My chin mom and her kits are infected with Giardia.  Right now it is dormant. The vet advises against treatment until the kits are weaned, which will be on October 23.  The vet also said that he encounters many people that do not treat their chinchillas unless they are having the clinical symptoms, because of the side effects.  Input anyone? ::shrug::

Memorials / Goodbye Puff 8/6/02 and Frisbee 7/15/11, my bro and sis.
« on: September 13, 2011, 05:29:52 PM »
Although I have pretty much healed, I might as well put this up.

Puff, our time together was short, but I enjoyed and loved you. I don't know what killed you. It could have been the pain from the pododermatitis, or the corneal ulcer. It could have been old age. I didn't know your history too well.

Frisbee, It was a great 9 years with you.  You weren't the most healthy chin, but the vet and me saved your life many times. From the first time when you came under my care, from the constipation you suffered from the crap you were being fed by your old family, to the infections you got in your life, to your final battle with pyometra. The bond between us kept you going. Even had the vet and me known you were a female, there was still the risk of losing you in surgery. The only treatment for pyometra in chins is ovariohysterectomy. You were so weak from the pyometra and the secondary infection that we couldn't even run a blood test.  We fought for your life, trying to stabilize you, keeping you comfortable until you passed away.

Both of you are forever in my heart.

Q & A / Question about kits.
« on: September 11, 2011, 07:44:44 PM »
Hi. One of my chins recently gave birth to her first litter.  When it is time to wean them, do I do it gradually or abruptly? And as far as them eating after being weaned, I have read different things regarding the amount of food they should have.  I feed my adults free choice, but I have heard that juveniles can die from over eating. How much pellets should my kits be given after they are weaned?
