Im glad he is doing ok.  I had a feeling they would give him a shot of an anti-inflammatory for it.
Oh no, not an e-collar???  Poor guy.  Animals hate those things.  I see them try and sneak their way out of them every day at work.
But all in all, its going to be fine!! :-) rofl

I gave the lightest baby alone time with mom. 2 hours I had to bc I was away for a little bit.  But he is eating like a champ when hes alone.
I weighed them all today, he was 91 grams, the next white one was 104 grams and the standard was 141 grams.
When I said she was 150 the other day, I was rounding but she practically is!!!

I will give him some more alone time with mom tomorrow.  I gave them lots of hay tonight and their oat and animax supplements.

Oh, if he doesnt react to when you touch it, it might not be broken.  but could still be a bite.  Check it out, make sure he is breathing ok and doesnt have any seizure symptoms.
If it turns out to be a bite, im sure you doctor can give him a shot of an anti-inflammatory and anti-histimine to calm the reaction.

Let us know.

If something did fall on him I would bring him to your vet and possibly get some neck xrays to make sure nothing broke and caused the bruise that bad.
I could just be a bruise from something falling on him.  But for it to flare up that quickly, specially since you checked his bod out a few days ago.  Means something serious is happening and I wouldnt take it lightly.  As I know you arent.

Call your vet tomorrow, and try and get him in as soon as you can.  Mention the possibility of radiographs just to ease your mind.  You can never be to careful with these small guys.  Im sure their necks are fragile.

Keep us posted.

Does the skin look irritated and inflammed too or just like a bruise.  Bc he could have gotten bit by something like a bug or spider, and this could cause an inflammation/ allergic reaction around the bite.  Look for small punctures around it.
Just a thought.  Im trying to think of anything I can.

And your right, it doesnt look anything like ringworm.

Ok, I have a box Ive been using and have the reflective metal holder aimed right at the box.  but with the white chins, it makes them look like they are glowing!
Its hard to get natural sun in this room, specially since its all gone by the time I get home from work.
I have no lamp shades in the room.
No flash on the camera right, if Im using the natural light bulb aimed at the box?

I am just curious as to what others are using in their photo studios to take their chin pics.

Mine just come out aweful.  I mean they are ok, but could be way better.  Sometimes the light just gives off a yellow glow and I have an all natural light, light bulb.  I try day light but its not enough.  The flash on my camera doesnt do that great at bringing out their colors either.

Any suggestions???  What light bulbs do you guys use and how many?

Ok, so as many of you know my Kiwi had her quads.  The one runt passed away.
At birth the runt obviously weighed the least amount.  The two white ones weighed the same and teh standard weighed way more than all of them.

As they have been getting older the Pink white one weighed more than the pink white one, with the beige markings.
Now, at 3 weeks old.  The pink white with beige markings has completely passed his twin brother in weight.
He weighs 102 grams now, and the all White one who once weighed significantly more, now weighs only 84 grams.  But he gains weight everyday.  Just not as much as the other two.  The standard is at a whopping 150 grams already!!

I didnt know if this meant dwarfism?  Or if he is just a slow developer?  He seems very healthy and very energetic.  Gets enough time with mom, and is eating the hay, and starting to eat the pellets normally.
I even have the Animax supplement in there that they love.
He wont let me feed him the NutriCal, none of them like it.  Only my adults like it really.

Any suggestions or thoughts??

I hate to say it but I would recommend getting at least a window air conditioner to put in the room where the chin is.

Any temps over 80 degrees F are seriously dangerous for a chin.  Ice packs, frozen water bottles, ganite slabs and what not work well, but they dont last forever.

And make sure her water is fresh and cold everyday.  The cold water is a real favorite of my chins when its hot out.
I also cover up the windows to block out the hot sun.  Their room in my house faces the sun when it rises and hits noon at its hottest, so I have to make sure its not beating down into their room.

Its tough in the summer without air conditioning to maintain a normal temp for them.  I want to get central air in a few years, but its just not in the budget right now.   Of course Im spending it all on Chins. ;)

Someone emailed me and asked me how you can tell if a kit will be of show quality.

I didnt exactly know how to answer this really.  I told her you cant tell when they are kits, only when they are older and are full grown will it be easier to determine, and that Judges will critique the chins and give tips and tell you what you can be improved on.

Do any of you have anything else you would tell someone if they asked you this same question?

Well the openings in the wire are only 1/2 by 1/2, pretty small.  Definitely no room for a young one to sneak through.  Im not sure of the gauge right now, its in the garage, so I will check tomorrow.

The pans I would do as a slide in and out.  Thats how my friend is making them and it makes complete sense I must say!  :::grins::

When I said holes, I meant the Jump Holes.  I know you can buy some from custom cage websites and what not, but is there a general size you can buy, or do they come in different sizes.  Or if I made them myself, how big should it be?

Breeding 101 / Re: What do I do for my female if she is pregnant?
« on: June 07, 2007, 10:43:18 PM »
If she isnt ready, the female usually will ward the male off.  But you might want to separate them if you dont think she is ready.
The exercise wheel should come out, but she can still run around on the floor for exercise.  I was always told to take the wheel out.

No shelves is usually a recommended part of the cage as well, this will prevent youngins from trying to climb and falling and hurting themselves.
Lots of Hay, Pellets and I love using Animax supplements too.
Fresh water everyday, as they will drink a lot more once they get close to delivery.

Do you know when she might be due?  When did you put the male and female together?

Thanks for the tips.

I was thinking the runs be in the back of the girls cages.  A friend of mine is making hers where the pan slides in and out of the cage, the pan is the bottom of the cage in a sense.  Ive seen runs where the cages are placed inside of a pan.  This is not how I was thinking of doing it.

My fiances friend is a general contractor and has a tool that cuts the wire right down so there is no need to use the drimmel, which is good bc i hated doing that with my last cage.

I was thinking of using the cage wire that comes rolled up in a coil.  Is this too flimsy?  I use it for any added features I need for other cages, like doors or what not.  I was hoping to use this stuff because its fairly cheap, I would just need to come up with some measurements to see how much I would need and just buy a bunch of rolls.

Ive looked around for runs from others.  I just think it would be easier for me to do them and cheaper and less work for myself and for the girl making them now for me.

How big should the holes generally be for the runs?

Just wanted to know if anyone had any plans, or layouts on how to build breeding runs??

Im having a 4 unit one built for me right now, but I was thinking about building some myself so I dont have to keep making this girl do it for me, then drive to CA to get them.  It would save her time and trouble too.

Or if you have thoughts of your own and little secrets youve come up with to alter the runs to make them work more flawlessly, let me know.
I would be so appreciative.
thanks guys!

He is getting pretty big.  He weighs 541 grams as of today.  Such a great temperment, just sits in my arms, isnt crazy or rambunctious like the young ones usually are.  He is the sweetest chin I have right now, minus his mom and dad :-)
