Good for you.  I have about 20 right now.  Im also moving them around.  Waiting for possible breeders to become of a good age and weight.  And getting my cages back in order.  I just got some new runs!  So Im excited to get started.

Good Luck!

General Chat / My New Chin BV/vc/ebc
« on: July 07, 2007, 09:03:28 AM »
I just got my new chin from CPP in CA and I wanted to share pics of her.  Her name is Freeshia (like the color).
She was born in Feb.
I also noticed in the pics, her Left ear.  Let me know if you notice it too.  There is Violet coloring in the form of a stripe on her ear.  I though this was really cool and have never seen it before.
Have any of you seen anything like this before??

She is a Black Velvet (vc/ebc) So I thought it was probably due to the violet gene?  But I still have never seen anything like it before.

Q & A / Re: Just some questions
« on: July 03, 2007, 11:03:05 PM »
Neutering chinchillas isnt a real huge deal, it is a real quick procedure, if you have the right anesthetic protocol (meaning the right veternarian) and the right post-op care, there really shouldnt be any problems.
Sure, they are very much more sensitive to anesthesia than cats and dogs, just because of their size.  This is why you have to make sure your vet chooses the right anesthesia.

I am a veterinary Nurse and see neuters all the time (cats and dogs) but I have studied anesthesia in chinchillas, since I do anesthesia in dogs and cats I wanted to learn how different it would be for a chin.
Masking with a gas anesthetic is the best way.  No injectables from what Ive read.  Usually in cats and dogs we use an injectable induction agent and then maintain them on a gas, but since chins are so small and a neuter is just a 5 minutes or less procedure, masking is just enough to keep them under for the perfect amount of time in order to get it done.

Of course doctors will recommend doing bloodwork first to make sure the bloodwork isnt showing anything that would make anesthesia any more risky.  With altered liver and kidney values, it will make them more sensitive to anesthesia.
So bloodwork would be a good thing to do.  The will put the chin on antibiotics most definitely.  And use a closed method of neutering.

But i would definitely research it.  Some vets wont even do them, or will tell you there is a good chance they will die.
Theres a chance that anything can die under anesthesia....even humans, cats, dogs, ect.   Our vet does them a lot and ive never seen any complications.  As long as you have the right veterinarian, protocol and post op care, you should be ok.

I would definitely not spay though, way more risky.  Its an invasion of the entire abdomen, as opposed to an external procedure like the neuter.
Spays are way to invasive and they need to stay under longer which means you will need injectable drugs, which also stay in their system much longer, so it could affect their organs.

So No Spay, Ok Neuter  (depending on the circumstances).

General Breeder Chat / Breeding weights???
« on: July 02, 2007, 06:25:04 PM »
Ok, so I was planning on putting one of my med ebony females with my med ebony male.
She has had 2 litters in the past with another male, the last litter is 5 weeks now, so she is still nursing.

I finally weighed my male because he is so stubborn with the scale, he weighs a whopping 972 grams.  And when I weighed her today she was only 594 grams.
I realize she has a lot to gain back from nursing and what not, but how much do they usually gain back once they are finished?

What would be a safe weight for her to breed with this male?  When she wasnt pregnant she looked to be a good size, not as plump as him, but close size wise.
What do you all think??

Are you saying he was dead from the heat?  Do you have other chins??  Definitely put in an Air Conditioner as fast as you can.  Right in their room.  Or put their cages in the basement.  This is what I used to do when summer weather hit.

General Breeder Chat / Re: New Breeders.....Kinda of a vent?

Thats a good idea!  Breeders of exotics,  or IMO any breeder for that matter must have a license or something.
I just started breeding a year ago and I never wanted to do it for the money.  There is no money.  Anyone who thinks starting their own breeding business out of their basement to make some cold hard cash is just completely ignorant.

I have purchased all my chins that I breed from other legit and accomplished breeders, and make sure I am pairing them with the right mate.  Some of them are from Ritterspach.
Any breeder should have a license.  We have so many interbred Pits and other mixed breed dogs that come into the hospital with all sorts of health problems, and end up having to be put down, and they run out and get more.  The city "breeders" think they are in it for the money and if they can get brothers and sisters to breed, then they wont have to spend more money on more dogs or health papers or vaccines, and they make money off it.

It is just aweful and I wish I could get my hands on those people and just ring their necks.
Granted Ive only been breeding for a year, but I am very careful with what I breed, the mutes that I start with, which standards I will use to improve on the herd, ect.
But I know what you guys are talking about, Ive talked to some people through email who have contacted me for info on how to breed, and that they want to buy one of my chins to breed with the one they have at home.
"He has no papers but he is really healthy and really cute.  he would make really cute babies!".  Heard it all before, no thanks.  I decline people from buying my chins when they tell me that.  It will only aid in the increase population of poor quality chins, and I dont want to be someone who helped make that happen.  Sorry Charlie.

So I tried my trick of putting them in the carrier like I did the day before and it didnt work so well.
Well one thing is that each of them were moving around a lot.  When I took their pics before, they were both settled down and sleeping.

Here are some pics from yesterday in the carrier.  The three babies, and my Standard sc Female I got from Ritterspach.

T5

T7, the first one was taken the day before when she was sleeping.
The second one, was yesterday when she was running around in there.

Aliaha my Ritterspach addition :-)

Not quite sure what she was doing in this pic.  But she likes to hump the stuffed block she has in there.

I think I just need a new room with more light.  This room has weird walls, and corners, not a normal square room, so there are a lot of areas with shadows.

Health / Diarrhea and Acidophillis
« on: June 15, 2007, 09:36:44 PM »
My nursing Female chin is having some bad soft stool.  It is getting flattened and stuck to the top of her house when her and her babies jump around.
What can I give her to stop the Diarrhea?  I have acidophillis capsules to restore all the good bacteria.
I have been feeding her hay and her pellets, oat supplement and animax supplement.  Its part of her regular meal plans.
Do any of these cause soft stool like this?
Suggestions are welcome and appreciated :-)  ::silly:: Thanks Guys!

Ok, thanks for the tips guys.  I will be taking their 4 week old bday shots tomorrow and I will try that then.  And I will post some to show you what I come up with.
I took some good shots of the twins from my other litter inside their chin carrier, and they came out great, but it was darker, and I used the up close setting, and the flash.
The light in the room was way on the other side of the room.  I might try this with them tomorrow.

Thanks!  I just adore him.  I wouldnt give him up for the world.  He is the sweetest, never bitten me, sits right on my shouldar doesnt try to jump, runs right back in his cage, doesnt fight me to stay out.  Hes a very good boy.  I want to bring him to the show!
Of course I need to know the address of the show so I can see how long it will take me to get there to see if its even something I can do.
