General Chat / Worth the price???
« on: October 07, 2007, 05:03:24 PM »
So I check Chinchillas.com a lot not really to buy any since their prices are pretty high.

The chins I bought from them before were reasonable priced, which is why I considered them.
But every now and then I see these few beautiful chins that I don't know of anyone else breeding and cant help but think about buying them.

A while ago there was a beige violet chin. $700 though, obviously not in my price range.
And just today I looked and there is this beautiful Tan/Violet who I know I could use in my Violet breeding herd.

Question is......Is this little girl really worth $500????

Does anyone know of anyone who breeds Tan/Violets???

Heres the link.

Health / Eye Infection??
« on: September 01, 2007, 12:05:40 PM »
So my little chin Shorty (bred here) who will be a year old on Dec 24th.  Just started showing some weird signs.
Ill break it down for you as far as what Ive noticed.
Thursday night I noticed his right ear was down, and right eye was squinty.  I thought stroke since that usually will paralyze one side of the face.
But he was acting normal otherwise, not neurologic or anything, eating ok and swallowing ok.
Friday night, same thing.
This morning however, I noticed that the lower lid of the right eye was drooped a little but and the mucosa on the inside of the lid was swollen and red.  His right ear is still down and he is now shaking his head and rubbing that eye.

Still eating ok and drinking ok.  I gave him a little bit of Metacam for the pain and inflammation.
I called my vet today and they were booked so I have an apt for Tuesday since Monday we have labor day, no one is in the office.
But they said I could warm compress it.

What would you guys do?  Have you ever seen this before?

Ive had chin eye infections but just with discharge, not swollen conjunctiva.  And the terramycin usually took care of the others.  I'm scared to put anything in his eye before the exam.
I just dont want to wait til tuesday.  I dont want him to be in any discomfort.

I could use any suggestions you may have....Thanks everyone!

I took some pics of the eye and ear

In this one from a birds eye view you can see his ear is down

This one is the best to see all the problems.  The right ear is down, right eye is squinted and red, and there is also a sign of dried yellow discharge that came from his right nostral.

What do I do??

General Chat / My New Chin BV/vc/ebc
« on: July 07, 2007, 09:03:28 AM »
I just got my new chin from CPP in CA and I wanted to share pics of her.  Her name is Freeshia (like the color).
She was born in Feb.
I also noticed in the pics, her Left ear.  Let me know if you notice it too.  There is Violet coloring in the form of a stripe on her ear.  I though this was really cool and have never seen it before.
Have any of you seen anything like this before??

She is a Black Velvet (vc/ebc) So I thought it was probably due to the violet gene?  But I still have never seen anything like it before.

General Breeder Chat / Breeding weights???
« on: July 02, 2007, 06:25:04 PM »
Ok, so I was planning on putting one of my med ebony females with my med ebony male.
She has had 2 litters in the past with another male, the last litter is 5 weeks now, so she is still nursing.

I finally weighed my male because he is so stubborn with the scale, he weighs a whopping 972 grams.  And when I weighed her today she was only 594 grams.
I realize she has a lot to gain back from nursing and what not, but how much do they usually gain back once they are finished?

What would be a safe weight for her to breed with this male?  When she wasnt pregnant she looked to be a good size, not as plump as him, but close size wise.
What do you all think??

Health / Diarrhea and Acidophillis
« on: June 15, 2007, 09:36:44 PM »
My nursing Female chin is having some bad soft stool.  It is getting flattened and stuck to the top of her house when her and her babies jump around.
What can I give her to stop the Diarrhea?  I have acidophillis capsules to restore all the good bacteria.
I have been feeding her hay and her pellets, oat supplement and animax supplement.  Its part of her regular meal plans.
Do any of these cause soft stool like this?
Suggestions are welcome and appreciated :-)  ::silly:: Thanks Guys!

General Chat / Studio Lighting Questions
« on: June 10, 2007, 11:14:55 PM »
I am just curious as to what others are using in their photo studios to take their chin pics.

Mine just come out aweful.  I mean they are ok, but could be way better.  Sometimes the light just gives off a yellow glow and I have an all natural light, light bulb.  I try day light but its not enough.  The flash on my camera doesnt do that great at bringing out their colors either.

Any suggestions???  What light bulbs do you guys use and how many?

General Breeder Chat / Kit Weight Questions
« on: June 10, 2007, 11:09:50 PM »
Ok, so as many of you know my Kiwi had her quads.  The one runt passed away.
At birth the runt obviously weighed the least amount.  The two white ones weighed the same and teh standard weighed way more than all of them.

As they have been getting older the Pink white one weighed more than the pink white one, with the beige markings.
Now, at 3 weeks old.  The pink white with beige markings has completely passed his twin brother in weight.
He weighs 102 grams now, and the all White one who once weighed significantly more, now weighs only 84 grams.  But he gains weight everyday.  Just not as much as the other two.  The standard is at a whopping 150 grams already!!

I didnt know if this meant dwarfism?  Or if he is just a slow developer?  He seems very healthy and very energetic.  Gets enough time with mom, and is eating the hay, and starting to eat the pellets normally.
I even have the Animax supplement in there that they love.
He wont let me feed him the NutriCal, none of them like it.  Only my adults like it really.

Any suggestions or thoughts??

General Chat / Show Quality
« on: June 08, 2007, 08:51:40 PM »
Someone emailed me and asked me how you can tell if a kit will be of show quality.

I didnt exactly know how to answer this really.  I told her you cant tell when they are kits, only when they are older and are full grown will it be easier to determine, and that Judges will critique the chins and give tips and tell you what you can be improved on.

Do any of you have anything else you would tell someone if they asked you this same question?

General Breeder Chat / Breeding Runs
« on: June 05, 2007, 09:59:50 PM »
Just wanted to know if anyone had any plans, or layouts on how to build breeding runs??

Im having a 4 unit one built for me right now, but I was thinking about building some myself so I dont have to keep making this girl do it for me, then drive to CA to get them.  It would save her time and trouble too.

Or if you have thoughts of your own and little secrets youve come up with to alter the runs to make them work more flawlessly, let me know.
I would be so appreciative.
thanks guys!

General Chat / Sharing Pics of my Shorty
« on: June 04, 2007, 03:24:57 PM »
This is Shorty my Homo Beige, bred here from Kiwi and Coconut (their first litter born on christmas eve).
I just think he is so handsome and how much hes grown up that I had to share some of his pictures.

Id like to eventually get him to a show and see what they have to say about him.  And I was also thinking about breeding him in the future, but time will tell.

New Births / T8 and T9!!!
« on: May 30, 2007, 04:11:24 PM »
My Raisin had two kits yesterday, a boy and a girl.

T8 Female 55 grams

T9 Male 53 grams

Not too sure if they will be standard or ebony, mom is a medium ebony and dad is a mosaic.  Their belly colors are a toss up, whether they will be gray or white.

New Births / Quads!!
« on: May 22, 2007, 05:00:56 PM »
Well Kiwi had Quads last thursday.  But she is known to have a runt in every litter.  Her last Hetero Beige runt didnt make it past 3 days.  And her Hetero Beige runt in this litter didnt make it past 4 days despite all our help, supplementing and alone time with mom, he just didnt pull through.
Here is a pic of all of them on their Second day.

More on my website if you want to see them.  www.fortheloveofchinchillas.com

My Hetero Beige Female Kiwi is due anyday.
Please check my website for updates as I will be updating it daily when they are born and definitely posting
some pictures.  Depending on what she has, all should be for sale.  Im anticipating at least 2 as she is very large.
Of course if you are interested in one, email me and we can put it on hold.
my website incase you all missed my other posts, is...
www.fortheloveofchinchillas.com

I cant wait to post some pics of the new babies. Im just dying to see what colors she has this time around.
She had a Homo beige, a Hetero beige and a Pink White last time.    All have found homes but one, who I plan on breeding in the future to any violet kits I have in the future.

I just love the next 24-36 hours of anxiousness.

General Breeder Chat / Thoughts on Certain Mutations?
« on: April 13, 2007, 05:42:49 PM »
I have heard names being shot around of certain mutations.  I know I would never attempt them but I wanted to get a feel out there as how you all feel about each of them and what you know about them.  They are just interesting in that they are so mysterious.
For Starters the "Blue Diamond"  supposed Sapphire x Violet x Beige combination?  I have heard that two chins that carry both the Violet and Sapphire gene can produce these.  Does this mean that a Sapphire (violet carrier) and a Violet (sapphire carrier) can produce one?  I have also heard that they hold the beige gene too, whats true and whats not true?  I know it is a very weak mix and can ruin the integrity of the chins, that the sapphire genes need to be improved on before mixing them with the violets.

Second is the "Ultra Violet" or "TOV Violet".  I read that a Violet crossed with a BV, using their offspring and bred back to an Unrelated Violet will produce a beautiful Ultra Violet, but they must be bred back to a violet to get the darker coloring?  is this true?

Same question for the "Royal Blue" or "TOV Sapphire".

Let me know what you all think about these and if you can answer any of my questions.
