Thanks guys for your help.  Im just a hobby breeder as well, so I dont think that
buying her would be a good idea.
I bought two chins from him in the past and they were reasonable priced not at all near
500, or 1000.

I guess I never thought of it from that standpoint before.   That most of the chins he sells are mainly
for show.  It says so above each animal what they intend them to be and I never
put two and two together really.

Im going to pass on her.
Im really interested now in looking for a Solid Ebony (Extra Dark or Homo) whatever they are called
these days, as well as a
Pink White female.

Thanks again for your advice!!!  I knew I could count on this thread to put some
wise thoughts and meaning in my head!  :::grins::

General Chat / Worth the price???
« on: October 07, 2007, 05:03:24 PM »
So I check Chinchillas.com a lot not really to buy any since their prices are pretty high.

The chins I bought from them before were reasonable priced, which is why I considered them.
But every now and then I see these few beautiful chins that I don't know of anyone else breeding and cant help but think about buying them.

A while ago there was a beige violet chin. $700 though, obviously not in my price range.
And just today I looked and there is this beautiful Tan/Violet who I know I could use in my Violet breeding herd.

Question is......Is this little girl really worth $500????

Does anyone know of anyone who breeds Tan/Violets???

Heres the link.

Thanks Jo Ann.
These two have been paired for a good while now.  Her due date was actually almost 2 weeks ago.  She is a good size.  Definitely looks and feels pregnant.  I just cupped under her belly the other night and it felt large and hard.
Shes drinking a lot of water, a great eater and very energetic.
I think she needs some time to run around the room more.
So I'm just waiting patiently but very eager to see some healthy kit/kits.

My Beige female was due this past saturday and hasnt popped yet.  It will be her third litter and I might retire her after this one if she has 4 or more.  Shes Kiwi who had 4 last time and 3 the time before that.
Shes filling out too.  Both I believe are pregnant and we are just waiting to walk in one day and find the little ones.

Your violet wrap is beautiful, I dont blame you for keeping her.
When I get more breeder cages Im planning on working more specifically on the better lines without the ebony in one background.
Do they get dirty bellies only when one parent has ebony in their lines or can dirty bellies happen even with both parents having ebony??

Health / Re: Eye Infection??
« on: September 06, 2007, 04:20:09 PM »
Oh I know, but thanks for the refresher ! :-)
I have been letting him have some of my yogurt.  And I have acidophilis in the fridge for him :-)
Im so lucky that he likes everything.  He just eats the meds right out of the syringe with no problems.

So far so good.  It looks better.  Speaking of which, I have to go put some more drops in.....

Hi, thanks for the suggestions Jo Ann.
I did take him to the vet yesterday.  Let me fill you in from the weekend first.
I had been warm compressing it, mainly to get the gunk off his fur because he would wake up with his eye crusted shut.  Then I put in some antibiotic drops that I have on hand, Gentocin Opthamlic.  I have been dosing him with some oral metacam once a day for the pain and inflammation.
I ran into work to grab some Sulfatrim oral Antibiotics on Monday so I could start that incase the infection was more than just in his eye.
It started to look better yesterday when I took him in.
The doctor said that it most likely is an infection.  She said his ear looked fine, and the nose just had a large plug in it from all the drainage.  There was a slight possibility of some facial nerve damage because he wouldnt show a response when she moved her finger near his eye, he didnt blink, but the other side he did.
But doesnt know what would have caused it.  He is too young for a tumor or anything like that.  So we are hoping its just a side effect from the infection.  She did stain the eye, and saw no ulcers or anything.

She agreed with what I was already doing and wants me to do the drops 3x a day, sulfatrim 2x a day and metacam 1x a day.  She also added Artificial tears 3-4x a day to prevent the eye from drying out bc of the antibiotics.

But so far so good.  He loves his oral meds!!!  Chews the syringe off when I give it to him.
Very good about the eye drops and everything too.  Its really looking better and there is no more drainage out of the nose.

Im hoping there is no long term nerve damage from anything though.  I have never seen this in a chin before.  Not the bloodiness anyway.
Ill keep you all posted.  Thanks for your help!

I am so sorry to hear your loss.  My thoughts are with you.  Its always so hard to loose a chin especially when we have no idea why they left us. :'(

I lost one last monday, he was 2 years old and we still dont know what happened.

I will be thinking about you and keeping Cypress in my thoughts.

Health / Eye Infection??
« on: September 01, 2007, 12:05:40 PM »
So my little chin Shorty (bred here) who will be a year old on Dec 24th.  Just started showing some weird signs.
Ill break it down for you as far as what Ive noticed.
Thursday night I noticed his right ear was down, and right eye was squinty.  I thought stroke since that usually will paralyze one side of the face.
But he was acting normal otherwise, not neurologic or anything, eating ok and swallowing ok.
Friday night, same thing.
This morning however, I noticed that the lower lid of the right eye was drooped a little but and the mucosa on the inside of the lid was swollen and red.  His right ear is still down and he is now shaking his head and rubbing that eye.

Still eating ok and drinking ok.  I gave him a little bit of Metacam for the pain and inflammation.
I called my vet today and they were booked so I have an apt for Tuesday since Monday we have labor day, no one is in the office.
But they said I could warm compress it.

What would you guys do?  Have you ever seen this before?

Ive had chin eye infections but just with discharge, not swollen conjunctiva.  And the terramycin usually took care of the others.  I'm scared to put anything in his eye before the exam.
I just dont want to wait til tuesday.  I dont want him to be in any discomfort.

I could use any suggestions you may have....Thanks everyone!

I took some pics of the eye and ear

In this one from a birds eye view you can see his ear is down

This one is the best to see all the problems.  The right ear is down, right eye is squinted and red, and there is also a sign of dried yellow discharge that came from his right nostral.

What do I do??

Man I really really really want to go.  I dont know about spending over 14 hours in a car to get there though.  Or $200 for a flight, then I would need to rent a car.

Are there any other shows coming up and if so where??

Ok thanks.  Im gathering the information and trying to talk a fellow chin breeder friend to go along with me.  She lives in NY too so I wouldnt have to go alone.

Are there still spots for preregistration left?

I want to but not sure yet because its so far from me in NY.
NC was ok,  but now in SC its so much farther.  Whats the address so I can mapquest it and see how long it will take to drive, then I can decide if I want to fly.

General Chat / Re: Chinchilla Ranch?
« on: August 06, 2007, 09:45:15 PM »
Im sure its all preference, but in my head I see a "ranch" being the ones that have been around forever, the really experienced breeders who breed for the best quality, who pelt and who sell to other breeders and or individual pet owners.
I see ranchers as the ones who take care of the fur industry by providing their perfect quality furred chins.
Others are large hobby breeders, herds, farms....whatever's clever.

I could be completely wrong, but i guess that is just the conclusion I came to with all Ive read and heard.  Its how I see it in my head, and just call it my opinion on the matter.
I call mine a herd, small hobby breeder, because its small.

But I dont know, are there very large ranches who dont pelt??  Like Jim Ritterspach's ranch, do they pelt?  or Ryersons?
I see these guys as examples of "ranches"

But now I am just talking to talk here.  If you want to fill me in on what everyone else thinks, maybe it will help me sway my thoughts with more to go on.

Im curious about the Beige and Tan breeding run ranch.  What color kits have any of them had in the past, and have they all had litters?  No medical issues with adults?
