General Chat / Re: Playtime
« on: June 23, 2011, 03:01:26 PM »
I usually do 30 minutes at a time as they seem to get overheated because they get so excited. And, I must confess as Jean did...I cannot do it everyday and I am attempting to correct that.

Our playtime is in the bathroom chin proofed also..it is easy to chin prrof that room, the floors are marble so cooler and there are NO wires to worry about. I have a bunch of wicker baskets that a friend gave me and they jump in and out of those and use me as a jungle gym piece...which is funny!

General Chat / Kingston-new baby with "furr-chewing habit" UPDATE
« on: June 21, 2011, 10:06:33 AM »
Good Afternoon, fellow chin lovers. I just wanted to give everyone an update. A few months ago, I adopted a male black velvet chinchilla from a breeder here in New York. The breeder was very nice but could not breed "Kingston" as he had a furr chewing problem which apparently is genetic in some cases. I was not sure what I was getting into but was hopeful that I could nurture him into stopping this habit and provide him with a loving home. He wasn't as bad as I thought when I picked him up but he had a good portion of his furr on his right side chewed off. Well, knock on wood, he has not chewed since I brought him home and his beautiful black furr is entirely grown back..he is gorgeous and the sweetest laid back little dude! I set him up in his own condo with tons and tons of activities and I think maybe this helped. Of course, I understand that this habit can be like chewing nails for humans and maybe that is what I can relate to as it took me nearly 30 years to stop that nonsense! So I know there is hope. Kingston looks like a show chin!!! I am so proud of my litle guy...course I laugh at times thinking maybe the breeder just stuck him with a girl that he didnt approve of and he started chewing himself! If this is the case, then I cannot blame him!!! LOL...Everyone have a great day! I just wanted to pass along a happy story as I have been reading some tragic ones and thought maybe a nice one would be good!  ::silly:: ;)

Very Nice!!! What spoiled little furr balls you will have! Looks like a LOT of work but they are certainly worth it.
Congrats to your new little furry homeowners!

General Chat / Re: Bedding???
« on: June 07, 2011, 02:27:18 PM »
In my opinion, I would not use newspaper...glad to hear there has not been a problem...but I would think that it could cause an issue as with our newspapers, the ink comes off on your hands and is quite tough to wash off. I wouldn't think that would be safe after a while. I would stick with pine or aspen bedding or carefree. Newspaper would make me nervous But I am not saying anyone is wrong here. I am so paranoid with my 5 little furry friends  so maybe it is just me.   ::shrug::

Q & A / Re: Quiet squeaks
« on: June 06, 2011, 01:05:58 PM »
I have heard mine do that also....my guess would be yes and they seem to do that as they are jumping and running about in playtime. In my experiences with all 5 of my chinnies, that sound is never associated with a disagreement with their cage BFF. It is almost as if one of my girls does it as she is pouncing around, bouncing off the walls and landing on the floor. Nutty creatures, they are!  rofl

Q & A / Re: Lava Ledge?
« on: June 06, 2011, 06:39:45 AM »
Yes..Mine love the lava ledges and lava drops..They also come in triangles....The lava drops are great as they attach to the side of the cage and when the little buggers go up the the "wheels", it looks like they are attempting to drive a car...and that is waaaay too cute!  :2funny:

General Chat / Re: Does your chinchilla spill his/her food bowl
« on: May 24, 2011, 02:51:12 PM »
Oh and let me add that it does not end  with just the bowls...mine flip houses off ledges (heavy ones)!! and they manage to disconnect the water bottles and fling them across the room...UGH!!! (then the nerve..when I go into see what they are up to..I get a look that first says.."What did I do??" and then a look at disgust as to why they couldnt get a drink of water!!) LOL  :2funny: ;D

LOL!!! That sounds completely normal...With mine, I have to say that I agree with Diana...mine have figured out how to get the coop cups out and then play wwf chin time and baseball with them also!! Darn little buggers! They will NOT be fooled! It can be a bit frustrating as they can be wasteful furr balls but such is life. This is why I keep so many toys in the cage because at times I can keep the bowls in tact a good portion of the time...I have figured out some tricks to trying to keep their bad habits in line....LOL...it is SOOOOOOOO hard to be upset with them for more than 2.2 seconds...they are so darn cute! :2funny: ::silly::
