Memorials / Re: Lost one of my little ones
« on: September 27, 2010, 11:16:42 AM »
No, actually she passed away. After reading my post again it did sound like she might have ran away or something. I'm not sure what happened I check everyone before I go to bed and then again first thing in the morning.  Before I went to bed everyone was busy playing and running on wheels. When I walked into the room in the morning it was very quite (very unusual for my little ones) and as I went looking into cages I found her laying in a corner like she had just fallen over. That was so hard finding her like that...... ::cry222:::  :'(

Q & A / Re: Rabbit feed
« on: September 22, 2010, 07:29:16 AM »
my biggest issue is the cost of shipping, I'm working on a very limited budget right now do mainly from the economy here in Michigan but also because I went from having 4 jobs between my fiance and I to only having 2 and neither are the higher paying ones. We are working out our finances. So buying off the internet is ok but the shipping charges are what get me! I need something local that I can purchase and pick up or shipping will be cheaper because it's only going a very short distance. Is there anyone in MI that sells online or I can go to an purchase from? I'm also looking for a large amount of dust, I can only get small containers from the pet stores and with even just 6 chins I seem to go through quite a bit.

Q & A / Re: Rabbit feed

So I've been checking into the local pet stores and I'm getting even more frustrated >:( ::tickedoff:: :flames: ......NONE of them carry ANY of the listed "good" chinchilla OR rabbit feeds!!!!!  they sell alot of Kaytee for both but I'm not sure if that's a good one because it has a lot of colorful fillers (seeds and such). here are others that they carry:
Ecotrition
Healthy Select Natural Chinchilla Diet AND Rabbit Diet,
several differnet Kayee mixes for both ,
LM Animal Farms Bonanza Gourmet Diet Chinchilla Food AND Rabbit Food,
Sun Seed Sunscription Vita Prima Chinchilla Formula AND Rabbit Formula,
Supreme Pet Foods Charlie Chinchilla Dry Food,
ZuPreem Nature's Promise Premium Rabbit Food,

So my question is....will any of these work for my chinchillas? Are these good brands to use either rabbit or chinchilla? Does anyone know? I need help. Thanks

Q & A / Re: Need a NON PLASTIC bath house option
« on: September 20, 2010, 04:29:26 PM »
I took the veggie fresh drawer out of an old refrigerator. It's sides are pretty high and it is large enough that my pairs can get in together without arguing over the dust, plus its really hard plastic and mine have never even tried to chew it, even if I forget I've put it in their cage after the phone rings....oops .... but anyway, It seems to hold up very well I've been using the same one for the last 4+ years. I tend to accidentally break glass :-\ so I thought I'd try the drawer from my old frige before I junked it and its pretty nice, it can even go in the dishwasher though for smaller cages it doesn't always fit but leaving it on the floor during playtimes fixes that :::grins::

Cages / Re: Chinchilla Cage shopping!
« on: September 20, 2010, 04:20:13 PM »
I've been looking into Midwest's Ferret Nation and Critter Nation cages. Does anyone have experience with these and which is better???? I personally think the Critter Nation would be better for chins because it has 1/2" spacing but I can't find anywhere that lists the spacing for the Ferret Nation cage though it looks bigger then the Critter Nation BUT the Ferret Nation seems to be more widely used and cheaper. Any suggestions?

Q & A / Rabbit feed
« on: September 20, 2010, 04:13:08 PM »
I've notice contradictions before. What BRANDS of Chinchilla food AND rabbit food are safe, healthy and alright for chinchillas to eat. I've notice that rabbit feed seems to be cheaper but not sure if its ok for my chins to eat. My local pet stores don't buy alot of chin food because there isn't an abundace of chin owners in my area so they always seem to run out when I'm in most need of it.....but they always seem to have rabbit feed. Would it be ok for me to gradually switch them to a rabbit feed and if so WHAT should I get? I have 7 adults and two babies to care for and I need some advice. Thanks everyone

New Births / Perdy's Twins
« on: September 20, 2010, 03:15:12 PM »
Perdy and Sherman finally had TWINS! This is their 4th litter together and they have had single baby standard boys EVERYTIME. Mommy is a Black Velvet and Daddy is a Reverse Mosiac. I'm so happy to finally see color and a girl!!!!! The little girl is a Standard (but at least its a girl!LOL) and the little boy (again) is a Reverse Mosaic (who looks EXACTLY like his dad....I mean exactly) It is so different seeing thier interactions with each other compared to seeing just a baby and his mom/dad together. Here are a couple pictures from this past weekend they are 6 weeks old! wow how they grow so fast!

Memorials / Lost one of my little ones
« on: September 20, 2010, 02:49:10 PM »
I just lost Rolly a couple weeks ago. Not sure what happened, but it was so hard finding her. I keep telling myself there was no way to help what happened but its so hard walking in the room and seeing her cage mate all alone. He isn't taking it so well either, he is back to chewing his fur off! but he won't accept any other chin so I don't know what to do for the poor little guy! Just wanted to post, I'm so sad, she is one of the twins I got as a birthday gift for my fiance almost 5 years ago. Her sister Poly is doing well and is expecting babies at the end of October hopefully. I miss Rolly dearly but I've got all my other little ones to help me though it.

New Births / Re: What color?
« on: April 29, 2010, 10:18:39 AM »
his tail did darken up, but so did he! he is a very dark standard grey. (looks a little like veiling but not alot, so you can tell he definatly does have TOV in him!!! That is the second kit these two have had and both have been dark standards (the previous owner had a kit with them before) wondering if that's all their going to give me single kits that are all standards LOL

North Central USA / Re: Baby for sale!

Little "Edward" went to his new home this past weekend. They have a female chinchilla named "Bella" from the new movie series "Twilight"! They came a picked up the female from me a little over a month ago (she was one of my rescues) and they fell in love with the little guy too. So they bought him too and came to get him when he was old enough to leave!!! They are so excited, they email me with pictures every couple of days for updates! lol

Health / Re: Tumor and Fur chewing questions
« on: April 15, 2010, 08:09:59 PM »
I'm working on getting an appointment and to see if someone can take him for me. As far as a vet: Not that I can find, this one seems to be the only one in the area as in within 50miles or so! They have an opening Saturday morning so I'm going to see if my fiance can take him in.
It is defiantly a male. there is no slit, there is a large gap between the anus and penis and it is longer then the urethral cone on my females but there doesn't seem to be anything else like on the other males. He is very active, jumps around, climbs, eats, drinks, pees and poo is normal and is looking generally healthy though he seems underweight. His fur seems to be starting to grow back in places. the only thing that worries me is the red patch. I examined it myself today, because he is finally allowing me to hold him, before I could just scratch him or let him have free run there was no holding. The spot is kind of swollen, very dark red and kind of squishy, like there is liquid in it. It is also warm to the touch.

Also is there a way to take that metal ear tag out or is it alright to let him keep it. It's not affecting him in anyway is it?

He is quarentined. It is a male, but I think he was neutered because his "area" doesn't look like my other two males "area". I'm not sure though. His fur does look matted on the back and his belly but he has access to a bath everyday or every other day. His fur is getting a little longer around his shoulders growing back I believe. Making a vet appointment is harder then I thought it would be, my work hours and her open available hours are not working out for me. I wish I had more time to work with the little guy.
