General Chat / Help I'm getting Peed on!
« on: March 20, 2010, 08:56:16 PM »
I just rescued 3 more chins. a 2 year old ebony and her 1 year old kits (not sure what their colors would be called) one looks like my Black velvet but her belly is also a greyish black and the other looks like a VERY dark grey and her belly is the same color. Ebony Mom was bred with a standard a year year ago.

just a note on the rescue situation: a lady had 7 female chinchillas all in one cage together and she has a disability that is causing her to lose her mobility  so she couldn't care for them anymore :::(((  she put them up for adoption on a local website thing. I emailed her an went to pick up the ebony and ended up taking the daughters too!  ::)

the darker female is living with my cousin now, she is very sweet and likes to be held, petted and comes right up to the cage to get attention. but mom and the other baby are with me and my other chins. Mom is a little timid and barks when i touch her but once I have her she is ok and will just lay on me like she is just wants to cuddle. The daughter on the other hand is very aggessive and barks when you walk by the cage and sprays pee on you just for walking by....and don't even think about putting your hand in there!! I've had her for only about 8 hours and while i was adding food and hay i got peed on! or walking by i got peed on....just to name a couple of times today....  :o

i would like some help understanding why they might be doing this and why the one pees on people just for walking by, it's not like i'm trying to pick her up or anything I have only held her 2 times today. One was at the lady's house to put her in my cage,  and the second was to check her gender and move her to an actual cage instead of the carry cage they were in. but she seems to hate everyone. she peed on me about 15 times today ::beeker:: ! I'm also looking for advice on what I can do to help her not be so afraid and to stop peeing on everyone. ANY advice/ thoughts/concerns/help would be greatly appreciated!!! thank you everyone in advance.

Health / Not sure if right spot for this
« on: March 17, 2010, 09:27:18 PM »
I'm not sure if this is the right spot for this ::shrug::. I rescued a white mosaic male and a beige female in July '09. When I got them their fur was matted and very rough to the touch (almost like petting a dog) and I was told they had just had a bath :(. They were very thin too :::(((. They had been fed alot, the people said they couldn't understand why they were so thin when they fed them so much. Well I found out they were feeding them guinea pig food with all the treats in it and they didn't seem to be eating anything but the treats and the people would just dump the pellets out, they weren't getting hay either :noway:. As for their fur they were bathing them in fireplace ashes because "THE ASHES AND DUST ARE THE SAME THING"  >:( :flames:  ::tickedoff::

I'm just curious to know if any of this could have caused them any harm (they were like this for over a year closer to 2 years i think). My cousin has the beige female now and I kept the mosaic male, they seem to be doing ok, nothing wrong that I can tell, but I'm not sure. But these two were together for all that time and didn't breed. Could all of this have anything to do with it, and could it have affected the males mating ability?

North Central USA / Baby for sale!
« on: March 11, 2010, 08:41:58 AM »
Hi everyone, I live in Michigan and the RESCUED reverse mosaic male and Black Velvet female I just got had a baby boy 2 1/2 weeks ago. We're not 100% sure on his color yet, he looks like a standard but his tail is white (so must be a reverse mosaic like his daddy?). There are pictures of him on the main site under new births - topic "What color?"!
but my fiance told me I had to sell him  ::cry222::: ."We have too many pets" lol :2funny:. So I thought I'd start looking now, so that I can hopefully find him a home so that I know I can't get anymore attached to him. He is such a sweetie and loves to be held and is so active!!!! Please feel free to ask any questions or contact me through my email.

« on: March 06, 2010, 11:49:17 AM »
I am new to the forum. Though I have made a few posts. I thought I'd put up some pictures of my cuties! So here they are:
Black Velvet: Perdy (new mommy too!)
Reverse Mosiac: Sherman (new daddy too!)
Silver White: Mo (male)
Two Standards: Rolly& Poly (sisters 4years old)

I've had Rolly and Poly since they were 4months old. I got Mo July 2009 he is 2years old. And I just recently got Sherman and Perdy who are also 2 years old. They just had their second litter, only one kit.

Q & A / Help with Food/Treats
« on: March 05, 2010, 06:23:35 PM »
Hi, everyone.
I am new on here, and I would love to sit down and read everything but I don't have that much time!!!! And I'm sure someone, somewhere may have already asked this, and so I guess if they have can someone tell me where I can find the info on here.  But here goes:  I am not a new chin owner, I grew up with one (my first) and we didn't know much about him, but he lived for about 6 years and we did the best we could. Then a few years ago I purchased two girls and have since added 3 more adults to my family. I have read all I can to make sure I'm doing everything right this time around (and I think my family's first chin could still be with us if we had known about hair rings..... ::cry222::: ).

Sorry I've already got off my topic . I was wondering what the best kinds of hay and the best type of food are good for chins and also ALL treats that are ok to give to them. I have heard of so many different types of good and bad things that I'm so confused now ::shrug::.

Thanks Jacqie

New Births / What color?
« on: March 03, 2010, 08:32:04 AM »
My Little one was born Tuesday afternoon 2-22-10 (when no one was home!!) we were not sure on the exact day because we acquired the mated pair after she was preg. and the previous owner didn't know anything about chins so she didn't know when they mated either. Perdy had her little one on the one day no one would be home in the afternoon!!!!!! Though EVERYTHING IS FINE!!!!!

since this is my first little one I'm having a hard time telling if its a girl or boy but I think a girl. We will have to wait and see. I check every couple of days to see if I can tell better yet!! rofl

Mommy is a Black Velvet and Daddy is a Reverse Mosaic. Not sure what baby is going to be. Baby is grey with a white belly and darker fur (almost black) on its back but has a White tail base to tip. Does anyone have any guesses as to what color the little one is? ::silly:: I will try to post a picture as soon as I can figure out this new computer!

Q & A / Advice needed Please!!!!
« on: March 01, 2010, 12:01:58 PM »
I currently have 6 chinchillas. I started in October 2006 with a pair of 3month old sisters. In July 2009 I rescued a 2 1/2 year old male. After a short introduction period everyone was getting along very well so they were moved to the same cage. In January 2010 I acquired a breeding pair that were about 2 years old. I put the new chins and their cage near my other chins in their cage to see how everyone would get along. Through the cages everyone could smell each other but not reach each other. Everything was going good so I left for a couple hours when I came back I was in for a huge suprise! One of the sisters (the ones that have been together since the day they were born) had attacked the other! The one that was attacking is usually the quite, shy one, she had ripped a small piece from her sisters face(whiskers and all) and pulled out ALOT of fur (which still hasn't all grown back in) and put teeth marks in her ears! The more outgoing one has now healed but is terrified of her sister whom I have separated and put in a cage alone. I currently have the two males and two females in a cage together. Everyone is getting along fine, and I just had to put one female into a baby proof cage because she gave birth to one little kit but she lets all the others see the little guy and is alright when they have free roam together (2males, 2females and baby)Everything is great except the other sister, every time one of the other chins comes near her cage she freaks out and tries to bite them. She used to be a cuddle buddy and ride around on my shoulder now she even tries to bite me! Is there anything I can do for her to help her, my little one is a female and I was going to try setting up pairs (the sisters can't get preg. not sure why but I've tried for years with my cousins male and my own) and I wanted to put mommy and daddy back together, my origanal male with the new baby when she is old enough and the sisters back together, but can I? We need advice.

Thank you,
Jacd061506
