Conformation and Quality / Ebonies...
« on: May 26, 2011, 11:50:01 AM »
What is the difference in a Homo and a Hetero Ebony (if any?)
How do you tell the difference between each different ebony (light, med. dark, x dark)??

I have a male that is classified as a hetero extra dark ebony on his pedigree his dam is a dark tan and his sire is a hetero extra dark ebony. He has very dark, shiny black fur every where!

Then I have a female whose pedigree says she is a medium ebony but lists her generations as all ebony or ebony carriers not light med. dark or hetero/homo. She looks like a dark standard except with her belly being the same color all over.

I also have an other female whose pedigree says she is a medium ebony but lists her other generations as all ebonies (nothing else). she looks alot like my TOV black but with her belly and sides being the same color all over.

Why is there such a big difference in color between the two females when both are supposed to be "medium Ebony" and why is my male called a hetero ebony and an extra dark ebony?

I'll get some good quaility pictures tonight and get them posted.

Conformation and Quality / white ebony...how to tell?
« on: January 27, 2011, 09:50:25 AM »
I know that by breeding a white to an ebony will get a white ebony but if you don't know the background of the chin how can you tell since they can't be bred?

I have a male that was recently just dropped off here and he is all white with a few dark hairs on his face, his tail seems almost black except the tip which is white and the only other marking he has is a very dark spot on his leg that wraps around from the front to the back and slightly on his belly.

Just wondering if he would be considered a white ebony or if I should just stick with calling him a mosaic for lack of background knowledge. It's not really that important to know as he is just one of my rescues but I was curious to know.
thanks

North East USA / Re: breeding run cages in MI
« on: January 21, 2011, 09:08:35 AM »
Does anyone know someone who is in need of these cages? They all wont fit at my house and I have no use for them (except one as a baby cage) so I would like to sell them, just make an offer I'm open to anything!! I just don't need them. Any reasonable offers?

North East USA / breeding run cages in MI
« on: January 18, 2011, 11:19:36 AM »
I have someone I'm purchasing 8 "breeding" chinchillas with no pedigrees from. and I have no need for the breeding run cages as they will not be kept in breeding, so I'm looking to see if anyone in Michigan would like to purchase them from me. I'm asking $60 a cage and there are 6 "cages". There are three of each: 3-hole and 4-hole cages. but I'm only selling 5 cages because I'm keeping one for when there are babies (as all 5 girls are most likely pregnant).

the three hole cages measure: 12inches high by 19 inches wide by 69inches long (each section is 23inches long) with the run at the back.
the four hole cages measure 12inches high by 21inches wide by 48inches long (each section is 12inches long) with the run at the back.

You can pick any 5 and I'll keep the last one. Or if anyone just wants one or two that's fine too. I'd just like them sold so I can get separate cages for all the new chins!
you can reach me through my email at rainbowrotties@yahoo.com
Thanks!

New Births / Re: BABY
« on: November 12, 2010, 08:24:26 AM »
She is doing very well, I'm trying to get more pictures but mommy is a little over protective and I run the risk of getting bites everytime I stick my hand in there!!!! I get barked at and teeth grinding just feeding her every day!!! lol oh well, baby needs handling so she isn't like mommy!!!!
I'm sticking with my Harry Potter theme (dad is Harry Potter, Mom is Ginny, Mom's cagemate is Hermione) and I'm calling the little one "Luna". Luna is VERY active, runs/ popcorns everywhere. I was letting her run around my bed and she decided she was going to take a flying leap off the opposite side.....I made a dramatic dive and caught her mid-air!!!!  rofl She wasn't too happy about it :flames: ! Although my bed isn't very high I just didn't want a loose baby under my bed....it's too hard to get them out!

Her new "mommy" already came and fell in love with her, explained her knowledge to me (very extensive for a first timer!! :::grins:: ), and is debating names. So she will be headed to her new home around Christmas/new years as long as everything is good.

my fiance claims to love animals too but still gets annoyed with me because that seems to be the only thing I talk about..........I don't think so but oh well, my animals are my life, my babies and that's what matters to me so that's what I talk about!!! :::grins::

Q & A / does anyone have.....
« on: November 01, 2010, 05:50:55 PM »
I would like to make some fleece items for my chins cages and I have searched and found instructions for hammocks, shelf and ramp covers and a few other things but no one has any instructions for a fleece house.....can anyone help me out? I know those that sell them would rather not give that up and I understand, but I would like to save myself some money and be able to make my own for my self, I'm not trying to add to the cluster of people trying to sell them, just want to make some for my chinbabies! thanks in advance

New Births / BABY
« on: November 01, 2010, 09:06:43 AM »
I had several rescues in. One is a medium ebony female housed with a female homo beige. After my initial check the beige was not a female, and the ebony was very preg! so they are separated, and I've been watching mom for the last couple weeks. she finally gave birth! she was so big I was expecting at least twins possibly trips but she only had one huge female!!! I'm guessing light tan? she is the same color all the way around her entire body. here are two pics of her at about 4 hours old!!!!

General Chat / help with names
« on: October 07, 2010, 09:04:40 AM »
I just got 5 new arrivals in and I'm wondering if anyone can help me name some of them! I try to stick with characters from movies. I have a male, and 2 females without names still. Though they won't all be housed together I like naming them in "groups" so it makes more since lol! any suggestions? The three names should all come from the same movie.

I'm done letting my fiance do it....I end up with names from what I condisider dumb movies  lol.....Austin Powers and The Nutty Professor......**sigh**

Here are names I already have for some of my chins:
Mojo (Wilson White) & Foxy Cleopatra (Standard) (I've had 4 years)
Sherman (Mosiac) & Ms. Perdy (Black Velvet) (I've had 2 years)
Tarzan (Black Velvet) & Jane (Wilson White) (NEW)
beige male, ebony female and dark standard (NEW)

Thanks for your input!

Health / Re: runny poo but nothing else is different?? any ideas?
« on: October 07, 2010, 07:37:10 AM »
It is not really runny, more like a smooshed blob and I havn't noticed a smell to it. Some seem normal just a little wetter then normal, too.

Would a breed back effect her any? I'm not sure if they were but I know they had a run together outside of their seperate cages the day after she gave birth. She escaped while I was checking the weight of the babies, and dad was out having his daily run (my fault I should have waited but I couldnt resist holding those little ones) though they wre only together for a short time.

None of the others are showing any signs of it. Only the one female has diarrea, the male was in with her, though I seperated him a couple days ago, and he has normal poo. Of the things I've read it could come from water (but wouldnt that affect more then just 1?) or contaminated food....again more than one???
I guess I'm just wondering how it would affect just one and not any of the others, so where would something like this come from to only affect my female?

Health / runny poo but nothing else is different?? any ideas?
« on: October 06, 2010, 10:22:13 AM »
My female Black Velvet just had her kits weaned about a week ago. The last couple of days she has had very runny poo it's been a huge mess. all over her and her cage! She is eating, drinking and just as active as usual, nothing seems out of the ordinary. The only difference is that I did change everyones diet (to tradition) last week, I did it slowly with their old food plus the new and everyone else (all 9) seem to be ok and nothing has changed, just her. I was wondering if anyone had any idea if its just the food change or if it has something to do with her kits being weaned???? any suggestions would be helpful, thanks

General Chat / Re: New chin...spraying prob again
« on: October 01, 2010, 07:20:29 AM »
I ended up putting her into a smaller cage for a bit. It has a shelf, a wheel and her house, so it is kinda crowded in there. she has no room to stand up and spray at me, so she sits in her wheel and I can just reach in give her a couple scratches, a piece of raisin and then pick her up. I'm hoping this will help her realize I'm not going to hurt her (or whatever it is she thought the need to spray me is)!!!!! I'm getting my other 3 chins today so my total will be 10 and one of these will be her new cage mate (if they accept each other) in a couple weeks (after everyone is out of quarintine). I'm also hoping this will help her too! because these new ones are very socialized and handled and love people!!!!! Looking forward to gettign them, and thanks for the replies!

that could be the case, becuase she goes to the same corner and she will do this as soon as I walk into the room, even if I'm not getting her out yet. she will run to the back left corner and stand on her back legs and wait to see if I will try to get her. She's fine after her little spraying incidents and everything but as soon as I put her back into her cage she runs to that corner and stands up!!

General Chat / New chin...spraying prob again
« on: September 27, 2010, 12:07:51 PM »
I just picked up a new rescue. She was dropped off at a parrot rescue with a Macaw. She spent a month or more there before I got her. I was able to just reach in pick her up and hold her and she was wonderful. She had a harnees thing, so with that on she rode home in my lap (I was NOT driving my fiance was lol) and I even took her into the pet store when I went to get dog food. She loved it, she sat on my shoulder and rode around the store. Then I got her home she cuddled up in my lap while my fiance put her cage back together she sat there for a half hour. After I put her in her cage she wont let me take her out without spraying me several times first. Then she comes forward lets me scratch behind her ears and her chin then I can pick her up and she will ride on my shoulder, or cuddle on my lap. I'm not sure whats going on this time! LOL I'm sticking to the rules, holding my hand in there even when shes spraying me, and she will do this about 3-4 times then she sits in the corner for about a minute then slowly walks forward and I can start to pet her. After that I just pick her up.
