Breeding 101 / Re: help me!!!!!

If she is close you may find her laying on her side a lot.
Also if you jusy sit her in your hands with one under her belly you may feel kits move, even see them sometimes.
But as Jamie said if it's just one it can be hard to tell.
Did you find a mating plug?
The gals pee a lot more when their pregnant too.

Q & A / Re: new chin
« on: May 27, 2006, 12:45:35 PM »
Most chins pick a spot.
I have full pee pans in my cages, but most pick a corner or a spot close to the hay dish.
What are your pans like, and where do you want him to pee?
He will pass droppings everywhere, just like a rabbit he has no control, but he should only pee in his pee pan.

How sweet is that, yes thanks.
I have only seen one here in Newfoundland.
A pet shop had a pair but the female died.
The shop went belly up, so I don't know if the male is still here.
They are some cute.

Congrats, he's a hunk.
I know folks don't like big ears, but I have one with bigger.
Don't bother me any either, I think they make him just a little different again.
Jamie I don't understand the fuss over the big ears. Are they a strike against at the shows?
I wouldn't think they make any difference as they don't use the ears in furs.
We should start a thread looking for the biggest ears,  :D
Just for the fun of it.

Health / Re: Pokie's broken leg
« on: May 27, 2006, 12:15:46 PM »
Things are looking much better for my Pokie.
What ever he chewed off seemed to have helped.
I'd been massaging it right from the first cast.
Kept it warm, and protected.
The chew is healing well and he's starting to jump around a little.
You should see me cringe when he jumps from his cage. It's only a foot I guess, but he lands a little sideways toward the good leg.
I'll keep him up stairs untill all the fur has grown back, and he's jumping with ease.
I may just keep him in a smaller cage with less height.
I feel so relieved, the guilt from letting him jump from me was too much.
He'll prolly never see a comb again. ;D

Q & A / Re: new chin
« on: May 24, 2006, 09:47:55 AM »
Hi Brittany,
Congrats on your new chinchilla.
He sounds pretty young still, or could have been poked at by many fingers at the pet shop.
Kits will bite to see if your edible, or just good to chew too shreds.
When he does it too hard make a little yelp and pull away.
Repeat this until he's just nibbling, as this is his way of showing effection to you, he just wants to groom you like he'd groom another chin.
I have to do this with all my kits, and it only takes a couple of times before they learn how hard is too hard.
Good luck and let us know how it works, OK

Oh My Jamie,
Chicken pox! How old is he? The older the worse they can be.
My daughter was 16 before she got them, and what a state she was in.
Hope you get your pc back soon, what a huge space in our lives we given them eh! I was lost while mine was down.

Thank you both.
It's pretty swollen, and I have been doing all of the above, and then some.
It was a compound fracture, but no infection developed.
I don't think the break healed very well.
He's lost a lot of weight.
There's no new chews tonight. I have put a small bandage on it, more for suport.
Funny the foot has better color since he's chewed it. Maybe the debribing helped!

Health / Pokie's broken leg
« on: May 21, 2006, 11:57:11 AM »
My first chinchilla broke his leg 6 weeks ago.
He had a cast change at 3 weeks, when I first became worried that his foot wasn't getting a good blood supply.
The cast came off Thursday, and all seem ok. Now he's chewing at the site of the break. The foot seems dead to me, life less, and a paler pink then the leg.
I'm so afaid I'm going to loose him.
I just had to put down 2, and Cody is not doing as well as has been, though he just had a trim.
This is the worst I tell ya. :(

Wow Jamie things are looking good, will take a bit of getting used too.
Can't wait to get caught up with all of you.
My pc was infected too. All my chinnie pics are being held for ransom.
My inventory for the store will all have to be up dated again, but it's not a major problem, just a royal pain.
Some folks have nothing better to do. Or maybe they just like to display thier arrogance. Thinking they are better then the rest of us for being able to do such things.
Small minds, highly educated and too much time on their hands.Someone should give them a pet to love them. ;)
