Q & A / Traveling with Chinchillas!!!
« on: July 05, 2016, 05:26:43 AM »
Hi guys

In October I am going to be moving to Tucson AZ, from CT.

I have three chinchillas that I need to transport, I am going to be driving down, given I also have 3 dogs, and a Cat. I need to figure out how to transport them though, as I assume its going to take me a few days to get from CT to AZ as it will just be me so I will have to find pet friendly motels to stay in, if anyone if familiar with this route, and can point me in the right direction for that as well i would appreciate it,

thank you!!

So I have 2 females here at the house, my boyfriend works at a shelter and a one eyed, 6yr old male chin was just surrendered and he wants to know if i would take him.

I have a spare cage, since i upgraded my girls cage, i could theoretically take him in if i had my mothers permission.

But what am i looking at care wise with him and what am i looking at hormone wise with the two girls.

Health / wasting hay
« on: June 23, 2012, 06:21:53 AM »
Hey guys, my chins seem to like throwing their hay around and wasting it rather than eating it.....  :flames: is there any way I can get them to eat their hay, i mean they eat some but most of it ends up tossed out at the end of the week

because if a breeder could use the chin or get good money for a chin they wouldn't sell it to a pet store

Hi, I am also from CT, and if you would like I can try to find some one amongst my friends who would be willing to care for him in your absence. I would but I have two girls and don't need that stress when they come into heat. Just lemme know and i will start asking would it just be for the School year or year round till your done with school (4 years?)

Q & A / Re: What is the best food to feed your chinchilla?
« on: May 25, 2012, 08:25:02 PM »
Mazuri and Oxbow can be purchased in Petsmart, Tradition and Nuetrina rabbit online, those are the feeds I would stick to.

Actually we stopped carrying Mazuri at petsmart. but we still carry Oxbow, and I would check your local feed store for Mazuri, I live in the middle of no where and they carry 20lb bags of the stuff.... for 16 bucks in the middle of nowhere....

I give rolled Oats to my guys as treats they love them and they can have a bunch a day like a 1/4th of a teaspoon which don't sound like much but it rly is if you feed a flake at a time

Health / Switching food... causing larger, darker poops?
« on: May 17, 2012, 07:22:41 PM »
So, My 2 adopted rescue chins were on "Grreat choice" chinchilla food when I got them,

I can get Mazuri which I have been told on another forum is a good chin food for about 15 bucks for a 20lb bag compared to Oxbow for 12 bucks for 3lbs..... So thats what I got, the Mazuri , I've been slowly switching them over and I have noticed a change in their poo.....

When they arrived, their poo was a lot smaller and lighter in color, and now it is much darker and larger. Is this normal when switching foods? is it a bad thing? or a good thing?

Its not getting soft or anything, just larger and darker in color.....

Am i worrying over nothing?

relax, right now I have them on my left over care fresh from when i had my hamster, after that I was going to use woody pet bedding.  its like 6 bucks for a 40lb bag, and it work wonders, All the chins I have pet sat for have used it with no ill effect.

Im not sure, I have only had them since tuesday afternoon, I mean i give them daily attention, usually at night before I go to bed, but they have never barked before. last night was the 1st time, and it was so bad, I ended up sleeping on the couch downstairs..

Also my room is dark yes, but its not excessive, I can kinda see my way around things when I am up and about at night, I shall try opening my curtains so the moon light gets in better and see if this helps.

Q & A / Non stop barking, when lights are off?
« on: May 12, 2012, 09:14:37 PM »
So, every time tonight I have tried to turn the light off so I can go to bed, the chins start barking, at least according to some sound clips i listened to here: http://www.cheekychinchillas.com/chinsounds.html thats what it is, they have never done this before, and because the lights are off I can't figure out who it is.

But it is so loud I can't sleep, is there a way to make them stop? or a way to figure out why they have started, I mean you can hear it all the way across the house. The first time they did it i was down stairs and I ran up cause i thought someone was getting murdered.

Can anyone help me... I can't move them to another room they have to stay in mine, is there any solution?
