Memorials / 6 month baby passes
« on: September 02, 2007, 12:57:41 PM »
I am writing to give you some very unfortunate news. I had adopted a Pink White chinchilla in early may, only a few days after he had weaned and he passed away last night. I don't know what the cause was. I went to check on him as well as my other chinchilla at about 6 PM and both seemed fine. Then I went pack at about 830 and notice him on his side, even as I approached his cage and this is not at all like him. So i went to move him and noticed he felt very limp, and when I put him down he just flopped to his side. So i looked up my nearest 24 hour vet and headed that way. I noticed as i moved him to his travel cage that he kept trying to get up himself and kept falling to his sides. Unfortunately the vet was 15 miles away from my house and he did not make it that far into the drive. He had what appeared to be a seizure and let out a little cry and then passed. I gave him a little funeral i made a little coffin and burried him in the yard. It broke my heart, he was only about 6 months old and I do not understand what happened. I feed him Mazuri and gave him oats every other day. He had plenty of water. He had his abundance of hay as well as wood. I just don't know why it happened. I know it wasn't the heat because he was inside the house with air conditiioning. I just don't know. I am taking my other chinnie to the vet tomorrow for a check up just in case.

.........Cypress I will miss you  :'(

Q & A / Re: Introducing Chinchillas
« on: June 01, 2007, 09:59:24 PM »
Okay so today is the first day i put their cages next to each other, and I got to admit i am a little worried because they keep trying to bite each other through their cages!!!! I expected it to be more from my girl because I have had her longer, but its my boy who keeps initiating it...is this normal? Are they likely to calm down after a few weeks? I am not worried about them hurting each other through the cages though, because i kept the cages just slightly seperated so they can only touch each other with the tips of their noses, but no room for actual biting. I am still not planning to do any actual introducing for another month at least, because I am really scared of them hurting one another and I am waiting for my little girl to be at least a full year. Just wanted to update I guess.

He is pretty shy and timid, but he is also lazy. When I let him out he just stays in the same spot, he just likes to hang out I guess lol.

Q & A / Re: Introducing Chinchillas
« on: May 07, 2007, 04:35:35 PM »
no they are both from breeders, I took a long time before I settled on each, and I got both of their family lines. I have actually been researching breeding for months now. I am not saying I know everything yet but I do know a lot of information on them. I have been researching it since almost the time I got my girl, I knew I always wanted a pair for her I just wasn't sure if breeding would be right for me. It took me a long time to decide on it, and even now I am still waiting a few months before they will even be allowed together at all.

I am also prepared to keep them in seperate cages if they do not ever seem to get a long, I love them both and ultimately their safety is my first concern.

Q & A / Re: New Chinchilla Crying

No I have them caged seperately. I am going to let him bond with me before I start the process of trying to cage them together. He is 6 months and she is a little over 10 months old.

yeah but I dont think I am going to start introducing them for like another 2 months. I was thinking about it and I would rather have a connection with him before letting them bond, so I can have a relationship with them.

Q & A / New Chinchilla Crying
« on: May 06, 2007, 10:26:59 PM »
I just got my baby boy today. But everytime i even go near him he starts to make this weird shrieking noise that kinda sounds like hiccups only a lot worse. I have only been able to touch him once without him doing this.

When I got my little girl I was able to carry her right away, and she was affectionate from the begginning. Is this normal? Is it just that I got my girl from a breeder that handled her more often? SHould I just give him more time or is there something wrong with him?

I just got my new little baby boy today...he is beautiful!!!!! he is a Pink white, but his ears look more like beige pink then straight pink.

I have no idea what to name him... my girl is named Lillie and she is a black velvet...I would like the names to somehow go together if possible, but any suggestions welcomed.

Thanks!

Q & A / Introducing Chinchillas
« on: May 06, 2007, 05:08:36 PM »
I just brought home my new little guy today (i am so excited!!!!) I was just wondering how long should i wait to introduce my two togehter. I know that I need to do it slowly and the process itself will take a few weeks. I just don't know how long until I actually start the process. Should I wait a while to give him time to conform to me and the new environment before introducing my other chin? If so how long?

Breeding 101 / male standards for breeding
« on: March 30, 2007, 05:24:12 PM »
I am looking into potentially breeding my chinchilla. But before I do I want a lot of information. I have already received a lot of understanding but the one thing I have never seemed to get answered is what are the standards for the males. I know about the size and age requirements for the females...but are there any for the male? i know the male should not be significantly bigger than the female, but should he be a certain size or age before?

Q & A / color?
« on: January 15, 2007, 08:31:45 PM »
I was told my chinchilla was a black velvet but i know nothing about chinchillas. She does seem noticeably darker on the top (black) and she lightens up to her tummy which is grey. But I can't help but notice that she doesnt look THAT different from a standard. I was just wondering how I could know for sure.
