Health / My Chinchilla's fur is coming out??
« on: May 01, 2012, 10:30:39 PM »
I just don't understand. I give her fresh water, I haven't changed her diet, she gets dust bath's 3 times a week, she isn't pulling it out. Am I doing something wrong? She's my first chinchilla and she does have some health problems. She has seizures sometimes and no one is really sure why it happens. Any advice would be extremely appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Health / My chinchilla doesn't really ever make any noise?
« on: April 11, 2012, 12:34:54 PM »
When I first decided I wanted a Chinchilla, I read they can be noisy. Fast forward to today, Delilah only makes noises when I go to pick her up (which she doesn't like) and it sounds like a gremlin, or when she sneezes. Could it be because she never interacts with other Chinchillas? Is it normal for her not to be so vocal? Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Health / Re: Chinchilla Just Had A Seizure! Please Help
« on: April 11, 2012, 11:59:43 AM »
My Delilah has seizures as well, she's had them since she was a little thing. When she was with the breeder for the first few weeks, she never had a problem that the breeder noticed. She actually just had one last night, I've become accustomed to waking up if I hear them in my sleep. The breeder I got her from recommended I see a vet, but I don't live near any and I'm still searching, although there isn't a lot a vet could do I'd still like to try. My breeder also recommended I give Delilah a raisin or something now and then to maybe offset low blood sugar, which has seemed to have done the trick. The seizures are spreed farther apart, but they still do happen. If you need someone to talk to, I'm here.  :)

I'm no chinchilla expert, but I'd get them a better food. I try extremely hard to not have to switch my girls products often, only if I can't find it anywhere.

General Chat / Guilt over considering a new furry companion?
« on: January 09, 2012, 04:17:11 PM »
Hey guys, it's been such a long time since I've posted! With my poor Delilah and her health issues, I spend most of my time trying new remedies for her. Anyway, I was wondering if you guys have ever felt guilty over considering adopting another critter. I'm considering a puppy, a guinea pig (If I'm no longer allergic) or a rabbit. Now don't get me wrong I LOVE my 'Lilah girl (my grey female Chinchilla) she's got such a funny little personality and wins hearts wherever she goes. But she isn't very cuddly, she makes a funny little gremlin growl just when I have to grab her to place her in her travel cage to clean her main cage. I don't want her to feel like I've replaced her or I don't love her, especially when I spend time with the new animal. Did you guys ever go through this? How did it work out and did you end up getting the new pet?

Q & A / Re: Need a NON PLASTIC bath house option
« on: September 17, 2010, 12:10:54 PM »
jrod, The fish bowl is a good idea, but Delilah should have a dust bath more then just once a week, atleast a few times.

1newchin, Chin Fish... I love it. I can see it now... rofl

I said I wash the fish bowl once a week. She gets a dust bath every day or every other day.

Q & A / Re: Please help me with new chin owner trouble!
« on: September 14, 2010, 05:25:59 PM »
Chinchillas hate being chased around. If I had to guess about it (And I'm just guessing) maybe it triggers some sort of natural reaction, I mean, in the wild all they have to rely on is they're speed to get away from threats. I would try just sticking my hand in the cage and speaking softly to him, let him come to you if he wants.

Q & A / Re: Reading to your Chinchillas
« on: September 14, 2010, 05:22:43 PM »
I've never heard of trying that, but Delilah responds to me talking to her and whenever I sing a little song (Yes, I do make up songs to the tune of that one song 'Hey there, Delilah') but I'll have to try it tonight before I go to sleep. After all, they do act just like children!

I use a fishbowl and turn it on it's side so my Delilah can climb in and I wash it once a week.

Q & A / Re: Keeping cool in the summer
« on: September 14, 2010, 05:15:56 PM »
If you have a chinchilla and you live in such extreme weather, you will have to buy an AC. I live in Connecticut and even though summer isn't too long, it's pretty hot. Not to mention the weather is totally wacky. a quick fix is would be a chin-chiller, but you would still need an AC. I wouldn't put it off.

they chin-chillers are on sale online, I paid $10 for one.

Q & A / Re: Bonding Advice?
« on: September 14, 2010, 05:09:24 PM »
What I do is I talk to Delilah all the time, greet her each time I walk in the room. I try to keep her feeding time and everything at a certain time, so she knows she can trust I'll take care of her. If your room is safe and/or you have a fence, you should let her run around, interact with her. Give her a treat every so often, even if you don't feel up to taking her out of her cage, just stick your hand inside and talk to her. They like to know their loved.  :)

Cages / Re: Has anyone used a hampster cage as a chin cage?
« on: September 14, 2010, 05:01:27 PM »
Well, from what I've learned that one isn't big enough. They like to run and jump and climb, it looks like they would just have enough room to run in a circle.
