Health / Re: Chinchilla not eating much or at all and is hardly active now.

was this vet a specialist?  or at least know enough about chinchillas to treat him? if not, i would find another vet, just to make sure its nothing serious.

chinchillas need quality food for chinchillas.. otherwise you will have one that turns out unhealthy and will most likely die before his time

i think they are all great subjects.

if i may add my 2cents, if i may suggest, stressing the dangers of breeding to people that just "do it" would be a great choice. i have seen so many time people just toss two chins together and when i try to explain to them how bad that is, i have heard "well how else do you learn".   at that point, i have walked away because i didnt want it to get heated [not here].  they dont realize that mom has to weigh a certain amount or the kit might not pass, etc etc..

do you actually want kits?  the reason i am asking, and i'm not bashing you or attacking, just fyi, not knowing their background its best not to breed them, too many things can happen.. if you are interested in breeding, find a rep breeder, ask lots of questions and then breed.  i have seen so many horrible deaths from chins that shouldn't of been breed, even with good stock, many horrible things can and does go wrong.  i just hate to see your loved furs die.  so many people have said "well how can you learn if you dont just breed".. well, its best to learn by finding a mentor, so you can eliminate many problems that can arise from breeding by learning the do's and don'ts of breeding.  this comes from experience, from someone that did have mentors and thought she was ready to breed.  i had quite a lot of knowledge, but it still wasn't enough, and i shed many, many tears, and i now have a few chins/kits out in my yard :(  i'm not saying that something will always go wrong, but when breeding just any two chins, but you never know what you may end up.. what if malo is in the genes, or any other health issues... rep breeders will pull any chins from their breeding if they have any issues at all, to make sure that they are all healthy ...

hope i didnt step over the line here..  but to me its not worth taking a chance on losing a fur baby when you dont know their background, its heartbreaking and i hate to see others go thro that

i know my Noel would too.. she is just horrible when it comes to out of cage time, she puts everything in her mouth that she shouldnt, and yes my room is chinny proof, but she always finds a way around that..    ::shrug::

Q & A / Re: Clay toys for my chin!
« on: October 23, 2014, 09:00:07 AM »
i also see a lot of people using the clay pots, but arent they made out of something other than ceramic material?  i dont know, i just thought they were.  what i do know is that with ceramics, if humans are to use it for consumption, it has to have a coating of something otherwise its dangerous to us, so just because of that, i personally wouldnt chance using it for chinchillas, if the coating was even safe for chins, what happens if he does manage to break a piece off and ingest any part of it, would end up being lethal :(..   oh it would be so much more fun to set up their cages if so many things werent dangerous to them :(

« on: October 23, 2014, 08:54:46 AM »
very pretty.  i had a mutt once, half husky/half shep, and i def saw both breeds in him.  one of the husky traits he had was the "talking", and i loved how vocal dillion was, it cracked me up and i miss it and him.  all of my other dogs were/are pure german sheps  and they arent as vocal :(.  i would love to get another, but i cant handle how stubborn they can be.  dillion had the shep smarts, learned very quickly, but if he didnt want to do something, the husky came out of him.. drove me nuts..  he was such a fun dog tho, we did so much together, and i was blessed to have him for 15 1/2 years.
