Health / Worried about health of chinchilla mother
« on: September 18, 2016, 07:03:35 AM »
Hello.
Recently, my female, nursing chinchilla with 3 kits started becoming lethargic and losing weight, at first I thought it was my imagination but she felt light in my hands and i could feel her bones which really scared me. I have been giving her calcium sticks but clearly that's not enough. I don't think she is pooping neither and she is walking funny (like she is pregnant again, she's not pregnant again since she's been nowhere near the males). I called the vet for some advice because I think she's low on calcium and they told me to feed the babies once in a while to prevent them from taking too much milk from the mother. They gave me this powdered stuff and told me to mix it with water. I'm still concerned since the mother seems limp in my hands. Is there anything I could do? Or is it back to the vet? What's the best supplement for calcium to give her? The kits are a month old with another month or so to go before they are weaned.
Any suggestions?

General Chat / Have a problem
« on: February 04, 2016, 05:55:58 PM »
Hello all
I have a bit of a problem. The male chinchilla I had since August is actually a female, I can feel the nipples under her fur and her genitals looks
exactly like a female chinchilla ( I have not yet had a professional opinion on it yet)  only trouble is she is with two other male chinchillas and I am concerned that they will start fighting. They are ok at the moment though and get a long really well. I understand that mating season is during the summer time during the year? Will the fighting happen during mating season or can it happen at any time? Should I get her sex checked by a professional?

Health / Chins biting him too hard?
« on: December 31, 2015, 12:55:29 PM »
Hello
I have three chinchillas and the other day there was blood one of the chins side. It's now scabbed up and there is a lump on the side and a patch of fur missing. I phoned up the vet and they told me if it doesn't need gluing nor stitching it's fine just keep it clean and dry and it'll heal on its own. A few days after that I noticed another scab with a patch of fur missing. I decided to put him in a separate cage since I think that the other chins are nibbling him too hard on him. Just worried about him whether it is just an injury or is he getting abscesses on his fur. Not sure how you can tell a chin not to bite too hard. He does warn the other one nibbling but he just continues. How can I get him to stop? I'm pretty new at looking after chinchillas. Thanks
