General Chat / Misadventures trying to kiss my chinchilla.
« on: October 22, 2015, 01:03:20 PM »
Ok, I had just taken Popsicle out of his cage for playtime. I leaned in for a kiss... He dodged to the left! Re-aim, kiss... Dodged to the right! ... 10 more of my kiss attempts were dodged! ... Sigh. Heartbroken, I resumed playtime.

Later, I put him on my shoulder and gave him his treat. He happily ate it... Then he reached over in front of me, and gave me a peck on the lips! (As a thank you?)

So cute...

General Chat / Something is wrong...
« on: September 28, 2015, 10:07:11 AM »
uh oh. There are 2 possibilities:

1) My electronic weighing scale is broken. Or at least, inaccurate.

2) Popsicle is now a fatty chinchilla, and weights 2230g. ... For reference, he was only like 800 a few months back.

General Chat / Curious about chinchilla psychology-> RE: Eating off finger.
« on: September 11, 2015, 09:29:15 AM »
OK, I've heard others supporting that it does work... now I'd like to discuss WHY it works. BTW, I have no idea.

What I'm talking about is the chinchillas' instinct to eat food off the tip of my finger. This has been very useful when administering critical care to my chinchilla, and I'm sure that it would be useful for many other chin owners too. (Having said that, I suspect this doesn't work on ALL chins, and there will be cases that still need to be forcefed via syringe).

To contrast, I often get tired of placing food on my fingertip over and over again and try to simplify the process by offering the bowl of critical care paste directly to Popsicle, but he will usually take a nibble or two at most before losing interest. The fingerfood technique makes a HUGE difference, to him.

My question though is... how in the world does this sort of instinct develop in an animal? Does Popsicle think my hand is another chinchilla, and he is being offered food mouth to mouth? Does he think he's grooming me? What makes food off the tip of my finger so much more attractive than food I place in a bowl in front of him? Does he think that eating off my finger is a game? A mating ritual? Parent and child feeding?

General Chat / Alternative to syringe feeding -> Hand feeding.

Very good results with this method up to now, and I read online some other people having success when offering CC on their finger... it might have something to do with rodent instincts.

Well, I had this crazy idea that popsicle might bond better with me if we eat the same food, so I have tried sampling some of his food. The results so far... not that encouraging. Popsicle was actually quite confused when I started stripping an applestick of it's bark. It actually does have an aroma of apples, so not too unpalatable, actually...

General Chat / Popsicle has been chewing on his own tail.
« on: March 25, 2015, 10:09:16 AM »
his tail was previously a bit injured, missing some fur. Now, the missing fur section is much bigger, and sometimes it is bleeding. I think he's been chewing on it, ripping out the hairs. What's up?

Hi, when I was syringe feeding popsicle a while back, there was spillage, and now days later hes still got clumps of fur stuck together by dried critical care. how do i go about helping him clean this?

Health / I think Popsicle is not eating
« on: March 15, 2015, 08:17:13 AM »
Just started him on antibiotics a few days ago for a foot infection.
The bad part is, I was outstation for a bit, so I put in a lot of food in his bowl, and now I'm not sure whether he ate properly or not. I tossed it all out and put in a fresh helping and noted now much I put, so I'll be certain tomorrow.
Anyhow... what to do if he's really stopped eating? Stop the antibiotics? Or just feed him lots of sugary treats to keep up his strength until he's completed the antibiotics? Or what? I'm getting desperate here.
He's still acting as normal, very energetic, struggles like crazy when it's time for medicine.

Health / How long does it take fur to grow back?
« on: February 20, 2015, 01:55:04 AM »
Serious this time.

Accidentally stepped on Popsicle's tail a few days ago. No injuries it seems, but massive fur slip on tail, there's a big totally bald patch now (10 square cm area i estimate) He shed a little bit on his back too but that part is unnoticable.

How long will the bald spot remain? Popsicle's dignity has been reduced! :(

General Chat / How demanding is your chin?
« on: January 26, 2015, 04:40:10 PM »
Wow... Popsicle is getting... spoilt.

He's a rather atypical chin, for one thing, he LOVES being chased around. It's his game. He loves to have me try to catch him.
And during playtime, if I don't give him enough attention, ie CONSTANT and FULL attention, he can get frustrated and stressed and he will run back into his cage and throw himself into his metal house (he has several houses) and sulk with red ears. At first I thought he was overheating from playing, but after analysis, I noticed his ears don't turn very red from physical activity, but when he gets upset they turn bright red...

General Chat / By Rodent standards, Popsicle is an electrical engineer.
« on: January 05, 2015, 06:40:32 AM »
OK, Popsicle's daily playtime is a bit long for me, so I often let him do his own thing while I use my computer or Ipad etc.
Unfortunatly, Popsicle hates being ignored during playtime, as I found out, so he was aggressively jumping on my keyboard, chewing wires, etc,  no matter how much I scolded him.
In fact, he's figured out that the WIRES are the weak points, and he is now smart enough to concentrate 1 spot and directly bite the wire in half. He killed 3 mouses in 3 days. (computer mouse wire) Of course he got punished for this.
...
And we have finally reached an understanding. If I play with him properly, he behaves himself. If I ignore him during playtime and start using electronic devices, he will RUSH to the wires, find a thin one he can bite in half, and outright snap the wire.
...
Yeah, he's worked out "wire = important part of electronic device". Man...

Health / Diet or not to diet?
« on: December 01, 2014, 05:54:05 AM »
Hi, Popsicle seems to eat quite a bit, I read online that you should feed about 20g of pellets, but some sites say that chins will not overeat the standard pellets (I use Hachi).
I was giving him unlimitted pellets and hay since guides generally say unlimitted pellets for under 1 year old/ still growing, but now he's about 1 year old, should I reduce the amount of pellets he gets?
