Q & A / Traveling with Chinchillas!!!
« on: July 05, 2016, 05:26:43 AM »
Hi guys

In October I am going to be moving to Tucson AZ, from CT.

I have three chinchillas that I need to transport, I am going to be driving down, given I also have 3 dogs, and a Cat. I need to figure out how to transport them though, as I assume its going to take me a few days to get from CT to AZ as it will just be me so I will have to find pet friendly motels to stay in, if anyone if familiar with this route, and can point me in the right direction for that as well i would appreciate it,

thank you!!

General Chat / Question
« on: November 20, 2012, 06:27:36 PM »
So I have 2 females here at the house, my boyfriend works at a shelter and a one eyed, 6yr old male chin was just surrendered and he wants to know if i would take him.

I have a spare cage, since i upgraded my girls cage, i could theoretically take him in if i had my mothers permission.

But what am i looking at care wise with him and what am i looking at hormone wise with the two girls.

Health / wasting hay
« on: June 23, 2012, 06:21:53 AM »
Hey guys, my chins seem to like throwing their hay around and wasting it rather than eating it.....  :flames: is there any way I can get them to eat their hay, i mean they eat some but most of it ends up tossed out at the end of the week

Health / Switching food... causing larger, darker poops?
« on: May 17, 2012, 07:22:41 PM »
So, My 2 adopted rescue chins were on "Grreat choice" chinchilla food when I got them,

I can get Mazuri which I have been told on another forum is a good chin food for about 15 bucks for a 20lb bag compared to Oxbow for 12 bucks for 3lbs..... So thats what I got, the Mazuri , I've been slowly switching them over and I have noticed a change in their poo.....

When they arrived, their poo was a lot smaller and lighter in color, and now it is much darker and larger. Is this normal when switching foods? is it a bad thing? or a good thing?

Its not getting soft or anything, just larger and darker in color.....

Am i worrying over nothing?

Q & A / Non stop barking, when lights are off?
« on: May 12, 2012, 09:14:37 PM »
So, every time tonight I have tried to turn the light off so I can go to bed, the chins start barking, at least according to some sound clips i listened to here: http://www.cheekychinchillas.com/chinsounds.html thats what it is, they have never done this before, and because the lights are off I can't figure out who it is.

But it is so loud I can't sleep, is there a way to make them stop? or a way to figure out why they have started, I mean you can hear it all the way across the house. The first time they did it i was down stairs and I ran up cause i thought someone was getting murdered.

Can anyone help me... I can't move them to another room they have to stay in mine, is there any solution?

Q & A / Why dry over fresh?
« on: May 11, 2012, 06:07:26 AM »
So I was reading online for treats I can give to my chins, i want to use them mostly for bonding purposes and make it easier to get them back in the cage after free time lol.

Everything I found says fresh fruits are bad but dried is better. but why? dried fruits have a higher sugar content and isn't sugar bad?

General Chat / They're Here!!!!

So the two chins I was talking about in my thread about if a cage would work or not are here :) One is a mosaic and one is a standard i believe, he looks to dark to be a standard but is to light to be a ebony? i think thats the one im thinking of... so I think she is just a darker colored standard.

its kinda sad they came with hardly anything. No hammocks, no toys, one chew block and a wooden house...
crap for food, and chin dust but no dust house.... good thing im crafty with the sewing machine to at least get some comfy hammocks and cubes in there for them
Also a hudge bag of pine shavings....  :( now if they are anything like hamster/rats/mice then pine is bad for them.... so off to get new food and bedding i go...

Here is a pic.

Also how long would a 25lb bag of food last with 2 chins? for some reason out by me they only sell the good chin foods in bulk bags.... and could I keep the food fresh for how ever long it would last? if so how?

Cages / This cage won't work right?
« on: May 06, 2012, 10:36:20 AM »
So im getting 2 chins from someone on craigslist who was threatening to set them loose if no one came to get them. Because her daughter doesn't take care of them, So im going to be taking them in, earlier than I planned on getting chins but oh well they need me and it only moves up my plans by a month or so....

Anyways they are coming with what looks to be this cage: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4191242&lmdn=Small+Pet

at least when she sent me pics thats what it looked like.... This is not suitable for to chins is it? I mean it will have to work for now, because she wanted some money to recupe her costs so i don't have the money to make or buy the cage I want with the cost of getting them from her.

Im hoping to have a new cage set up in a month or so I have awesome DIY plans. I want to make a DIY cage  out of this: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1v/R-202067995/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=ur-185WGB&storeId=10051#BVRRWidgetID

but will that cage do till I can do that?

Hi guys,

So I am going to be getting chinchillas at some point in the somewhat near future and was doing my research. I have an ideas of what my startup is going to cost me. but I was wondering if anyone could tell me what my monthly expenses might look like if I had 2 chins.

I also would like to know what I good in store food brand is for chins or what you guys feed. I was planning on using aspen or something like that for bedding.

Edit: Oh if it helps I was planning on a double critter nation cage
