Health / Loneliness because of Infection
« on: February 29, 2008, 12:12:32 AM »
My 3-year-old chin, Sid, got an eye infection earlier this week. I noticed it Monday, his eyelid was red and swollen and patches of fur were missing around it. So, I took him to the vet and got some drops to put in and it's finally starting to clear up. As soon as I noticed the possible signs of infection I separated Sid from his 1-year-old cagement, Johnny.

It's been 5 days now and the stress of being alone is taking its toll on Johnny. He's restless and whimpers a lot, sometimes even barks for several minutes just to get attention. His stool is a lot lighter color and harder than usual and he eats and drinks a lot less. He won't even run on his wheel or come out of the cage for playtime. Sid, however, seems to be content being on his own. In fact, I think he's enjoying his break from the more energetic and sometimes bullying Johnny. But, my poor little John is heartbreaking to watch. I was told by the vet to keep them separated for the remainder of the eyedrop treatment but I was wondering if it was possible to bring them back together now that the infection is starting to clear up. I don't want to Johnny to catch anything from Sid, but I'm also worried about the stress Johnny's going through. Any suggestions?

General Chat / Skin Problem
« on: September 10, 2007, 01:04:48 AM »
I recently noticed some strange bumps on the back of my 3-yr-old chin, Sid. After taking a closer look, I saw a few scabs on his skin where he is missing some fur. He does have a 1-yr-old cagemate, Johnny. Sometimes, they can get a little fiesty with each other but I've never witnessed anything physical between the two of them. Could Johnny be causing these scabs? Should I separate them? Is it a possible skin disease or infection of some sort? Your helpful replies are greatly appreciated.

Q & A / Containers for food, hay, etc.
« on: May 24, 2007, 12:07:02 PM »
I was just wondering what everyone recommends to store pellets, hay, and dust in. Right now my hay is in a grocery brown bag, my dust is in a plastic bin and I keep my pellets in the original feed bag. Any recommendations?

General Chat / Leo Braun wheel or Flying Saucer?
« on: April 17, 2007, 12:47:24 PM »
I'm currently awaiting the arrival of a HUGE new cage for my two boys. Along with their new home, I'd like to get a new wheel to furnish the cage. Size is not an issue, I'm mainly looking for something that is silent and will provide safe exercise for both my older chin and the newbie. I've pretty much gathered that the Leo Braun models and the Flying Saucer are about the best wheels out there. I was wondering if anyone has compared the two side by side?

They both look like durable, safe models but I'd like a little more feedback before I make the pricey purchase.

Q & A / Tempermental Chin
« on: February 12, 2007, 04:41:17 PM »
I have a tempermental Chin, his name is Sid. I've had him for two years and he's always adored me and vice versa. But, about 2 months ago I bought another young ebony, also male. I introduced them slowly, using all the tips I could find and after the first month they seemed fine together at playtime. But, now the progress seems to have gone backwards. They can't be in a cage together for more than 20 min. without Sid getting very fiesty and begging to be left alone. Also, when they're out running around together Sid will get very territorial after about an hour. He charges, he bites (very hard) and he growls at me. His behavior scared me at first because I had never seen him act that way. I now have both of them secluded from one another because Sid's behavior is so violent and unpredictable. What do I do? Do I start again from the beginning, try to re-introduce them? Or are some chins just incompatible?
