North East USA / Light Ebony Kit - Pittsburgh
« on: January 31, 2007, 11:30:30 AM »
I've got a very sweet light ebony for sale. She's just over 8 weeks old right now. Her father was a homozygous ebony and her mother was standard. Both parents are very mild mannered which has made her a pretty calm kit. She'll let you hold her with very little protest. I'm asking $85 for her.

Health / Irritated Eye
« on: January 16, 2007, 04:40:08 PM »
One of my chins gets a cronicly irritated eye, about every other month his eye gets puffy and we flush it out with artificial tears and in a few days it goes back to normal. There's never any pus, so I don't think it is infected and it's always the same eye, although we have treated him with antibacterial eye drops in the past with the same results as the artificial tears. Whenever we examine him there always seems to be some type of irritant, some dust or some loose fur in the eye that's causing the irritation, what I'm not sure of is why he is unable to flush these out himself. What I'm thinking is that he has a blocked tear duct, which there isn't going to be anything we can do about it other than try to proactive treat it with artificial tears. Has anyone else encountered anything like this?

North East USA / 4 Chins Need New Homes
« on: October 08, 2006, 03:12:22 PM »
I was contacted today by two different people who are moving and can no longer keep their chins. I'm taking in three of them but there are still four others that need to find new homes in the next two weeks. THe ones that are blind in one eye are from the same breeder and have been like that since birth so it's most likely genetic. These are all pet only chins and shouldn't be bred. They are all free and come with a cage. Each chin has it's own cage. Please contacy me if you are interested in any of them and I'll put you in contact with the appropriate party. 412 241 0341 or contact@threeriverschinchilla.com

- standard female 4 years blind one eye
- pink white male 6 years old

Health / It's like he's marathon training or something.....
« on: June 20, 2006, 09:05:25 AM »
I've got this one male chin named Shotput that's been kind of worrying me over the last few months. He's a year old and weighs about 570 grams. His brother from the same litter is about 100 grams heavier. I say I'm kind of worried because while he's rather boney he runs on his wheel constantly. I hear him in it litterally all night long. He'll run for about thirty seconds to a minute, stop stand up, rock back in his flying saucer and start running again. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he ran 30 miles a night. I changed his food about two months ago since the Mazuri didn't seem to be appealing to him. I've got him on Show Hutch Deluxe show rabbit food now and since he went from 430 grams to 470, but he hasn't been gaining since then.

I'm kind of worried that because he's so much more athletic than other chins that his feed isn't giving the optimal nutrition he needs. I'm wondering if there's a supliment that I could get for him that's similar to a body builders diet, something high in complex carbohydrates and protien. Could I also give him glucosimine or MSM for joint health?

New Births / Kira had her first baby yesterday.
« on: June 09, 2006, 12:58:58 PM »
For some reason all my females manage to convince me that they're either not pregnant or aren't going to be due for another month. I saw Kira and Shotput mate and I calculated she'd be due on June first. She ended up being a week late and had one big 58 gram male white ebony. He's got the greatest color right now and I'm hoping it doesn't change, but unfourtunatly it probably will. His tail is all dark grey and then it changes to white at the end.

Chit Chat / Catering to your chins.

I'm sure I'm not the only one here that has gone to absurd lengths to make sure their chin is comfortable so I'd like to hear some of the other bizarre things people have done to spoil there chinnies.

When I was back in my old apartment the air conditioner I had was adequate, but I was always worried about keeping the heat down on a really hot day since I was up on the 3rd floor. So I made the chin fridge. Basically it was a 1ft X 1ft heat sync that I built from a mini fridge, a water pump that's used for outdoor ponds, a bunch of copper plumping pipe and aluminum kick plates. How it worked was that there was a reservoir of water in the fridge and the water pump pumped the cold water out through the tubing into their cage where the tubing coiled around inside an aluminum box and then back out into the fridge where it was put back into the reservoir. I had to turn up the temp in the fridge and put the pump on a timer so it didn't run constantly because that box got would get down to 35 degrees sometimes. It worked great all summer and then the pump finally burned out because it was too powerful to be pushing water through that small copper pipe.
