New Births / Seperating??????
« on: May 09, 2011, 03:01:40 PM »
My female's kit is now 7 weeks old now and is a male.  Have heard you need to seperate the males from the mother at 7 weeks.  I even found a companion that allows him to live in his cage.  I put him in there but then cries.  I take him out and put him in with his mother.  I'm afraid he will breed with his mother ??? :-\.  Should I just leave him in with the male?  ::shrug::

General Chat / What kind of chin?
« on: April 30, 2011, 09:27:54 AM »
My mosiac(Chinta) and beige(Cheerio) chinchillas finally had kits!  They had three beautiful show chins.  Two are pure white, 1 boy(Pocano) 1 girl(Willow).  The othere one is the runt.  She doesn't have a name yet.  She is exactly all white in the front and all beige in the back even her tail.  What kind of chinchilla is she?  Is she a rare breed?  What should she be listed as in shows?  Is it a good thing?  Also, any name suggestions?  Thanks!!! :)

General Chat / Surpise!!!

I was sleeping over my grandma's house this weekend.  When I got home I couldn't wait to see my chinchillas.  We were planning on getting more chinchillas soo there was an empty cage.  I walked over to the cages and saw something moving in the empty cage.  I asked my om if she separated my 2 chins and she said no.  I said there is something moving in there.  I opened the cage and a grey chinchilla and a beige chinchilla ran over to me.  I couldn't believe my mom got me the chinchillas that I wanted over the weekend while I was at my grandma's.  I was soo happy I closed the cage and ran over to my mom and gave her a hug.  I was soo happy I almost cried.  I name them Gizmo and Cheerio.  They are friendlier than my other 2.  I love them soo much!!! :)

General Chat / My chin got Best in Show!!!
« on: July 11, 2010, 05:48:51 PM »
I forgot to tell people that my chinchillas got best in show for a fair called "farm fair" ( aka: Burlington County fair).  There were like a hundred of small animals and my chinchilla Che-Che got an award for best in show out of all of them.  I was so happy, and since it was my first show in 4-H ( actually it was my first ever show I have ever been to).  :::grins::

Breeding 101 / can my female be overaged to have kits
« on: July 10, 2010, 07:21:30 AM »
My chinchilla is about three and a half and i have had my male in her cage for a while now and she was suppose to have her kits in June.  I have read that you are suppose to breed your chinchilla about at the age of one.  Could she be to old to have kits, does she need a little more time to have the kits, or is she not able to have kits.  ::shrug::

Breeding 101 / Scales
« on: July 03, 2010, 08:25:36 PM »
I asked about my female being pregnant  before and many people responded that weighing is the best way to tell if she is pregnant.  Where is the best place to get a chinchilla scale and how much do they cost???

North East USA / Looking for chins for sale in NJ
« on: July 03, 2010, 07:53:03 PM »
We have 2 chinchillas of my own, my daughter is in 4-H and she wants to specialize in chinchillas.  We only have standard greys and she wants different colors.  Does anyone have a chinchilla(s) preferably not standard grey.  Also, I am making my daughter pay for it herself since she wants it so it would have to be within a range of $40 or so.  I don't think it matter what gender it is we have a male and a female and they both have their own cages that could fit about five chinchillas.  It is ok if they are a breeding pair to because, we are trying to breed our chinchillas and we would breed a breeding pair.

Breeding 101 / How do you know your Chinchilla is pregnant???
« on: June 16, 2010, 12:56:40 PM »
I wanted to breed my male and female chinchillas so, I put the male in the female's cage.  He has been in there since November and I don't know if my female is pregnant.  I thought she was going to have them the end of April so, I took the male out but she never did.  I felt her stomach and it feels like she is pregnant but she is a big female.  So, I put my male back in her cage so if she never was pregnant, she would get pregnant.  How do you tell if she is pregnant???  ::shrug::
