General Chat / Anyone Hear about THIS?!
« on: May 20, 2010, 02:05:35 PM »
So I visited a Petco today, and noticed a sign on a chinchilla cage stating that according to New Mexico Law, they could NO LONGER sell chinchillas in pet shops. I asked one of the employees if she knew WHY, and she said it had to do with import & export, and endangered species.... apparently they are considering certain animals endangered now, and chinchillas are amongst them! Not sure if it's just in New Mexico or nation wide, or what ...... but could be good news! Means people will HAVE to go through a breeder to get a hold of them now, and for breeders that means you can potentially make more money off them.

Anyone see/hear anything about this in your area?

General Breeder Chat / I am pretty sure they mated...
« on: May 06, 2010, 02:55:39 PM »
My male and female have been together for 2 weeks now... but she wasn't letting him "have his way" with her. I figured it was the season... read they don't breed between May and Octoboer...(although I WAS informed that's not always true.
Well last night.... 4:30 am to be exact... my male was making a lot of noise, sounded like a chicken bawking. I saw him mount the female, and then later when I got out of bed (around 7am) I found a mucus plug where they had been. At least I think that's what it was...it felt like wax when I touched it. But obviously there is no wax in or around their cage. So I can only assume it was her plug.

.....guess we'll see in a hundred days of so, huh?
Is the chicken sound normal? It didn't sound like his usual mating call. At first I almost thought he had hiccups.

Health / Eye "sealed" shut
« on: May 01, 2010, 11:04:34 AM »
Last weekend I moved my female into the same cage as my male. They had been side-by-side for 3 months and getting along well at playtime. The first day or 2, he was really interested in mating, but she wasn't all that interested.
Then I started noticing his left eyes squinting....now, a week later, it's basically sealed shut. His right eye looks fine. And he's eating/drinking/pooping/gaining weight NORMAL. He seems happy & playful as usual.
I can only assume in her attempts to keep him from mating she must have scratched his eye and now it's basically "swollen shut" (although it doesn't appear to be puffy or red....just shut).

Is this common?
Should I leave him alone and allow it to heal on it's own?
Do I need to clean it & put some eye drops? (I did this last night)
Or do you think I need to have him see a vet about it?

Health / It was his teeth...
« on: March 20, 2010, 12:00:01 PM »
Dewey spent the day at the vets office yesterday. He had his mouth checked out....apparently his teeth are so bad, they were growing in all directions. Including one tooth growing to the side & poking the inside of his cheek (causing a wound with puss in it).
The vet had to trim & file down ALL his teeth. He's still on the Oxbox Critical Care & now on Baytril as well (to cure an infection in one of his teeth). We're going back in a month to do x-rays and make sure no teeth are fractured below the gum line...otherwise they have to come out!

Vet said this was caused by bad feeding when he was younger (when I didn't have him) ...and that it's SO important chins get water filled greens & roughage because he see's this problem all the time in chins that only get hay & pellets. *shrugs*

Breeding 101 / At what age do you seperate the kits from their mama?
« on: March 10, 2010, 10:15:27 PM »
I was at Petsmart tonight and saw a BEAUTIFUL beige!!! I've only ever seen grays there, so I was in awe! So so sooooo tempted to buy her!!!! Anyway, I asked how old she was, and the employee told me "She's just a baby, about 6 weeks old" .... she appeared to be the same size as my Daisy, whom I was told was 6-8 months old when I purchased her. So I asked "Are you sure? She looks pretty big!" And the lady said "yes, we get them when they are very young, she's only 6-8 weeks old. A baby!" ......a big baby? Or is this girl wrong about the age and she's probably 6-8 MONTHS?
I guess I have it in my mind that 6 week old kits are still pretty little and living with their mamas...?

At what age do you usually separate the kits to sell? About how much do they weigh at that time? This chin had to be at least 400 grams. Like I said, she appeared to be the same size as my Daisy....whom I was told was 6-8 months old last month. I should have snapped a photo! I didn't even think about it while I was there, but now I wish I had.

Health / Weight
« on: March 10, 2010, 07:00:03 PM »
My chin Dewey has been slowly losing weight... BUT he had a virus that gave him a runny nose, and caused him to lose a bit of his appetite too.
March 1st he weighed 531 grams
March 4th he weighed 509 grams
March 5th I took him to the vet....their scale said he weighed 480 grams (but I am suspicious of the accuracy...that's a lot of weight to lose over night!)
March 10th he weighed in at 496 grams.

I am HOPING that he is still recovering from that virus and WILL gain his weight back soon. But when should I contact the vet again? Do I wait a week? 2? Do I wait until he's down to a certain weight? (what's too low for a 5.5 yr old male?)

On a positive note: little Daisy has been gaining and gaining! yay! I've been excited to get her up to 500 grams so she can finally join Dewey in his cage.
March 1st she was 412
March 4th: 417
March 10th 431 !! Woohooo!!

Q & A / Hay Snob
« on: March 04, 2010, 01:14:03 PM »
So when I first brought baby Daisy home last month, I was feeding her Kaytee brand timothy hay with added mint. I had purchased this hay clear back in October though (to try to entice Dewey to eat hay. Didn't work.) ...and I was a little worried about it's freshness because it felt crunchy and dry to me.
So, I was at Petsmart this past weekend and found the Oxbow western timothy on sale. I know Oxbow is a good quality brand....so I got some for Daisy and threw away the old Kaytee hay.
Well she won't touch this new hay. It feels and smells much fresher to me, but she ignores it! I wonder if she only ate the other stuff because of the brand, or (more likely) because of the MINT. Is she a hay snob or does she just want her herbs? lol
I guess I have 2 options.... I can go buy her more kaytee brand. Or I can buy some mint and add it to the oxbow and see if that entices her.... what would you do? Is it very healthy for chins to be eating mint in all their hay? Kaytee brand has other "extras" in their hay too. One has added carrots, but I am sure my chins would pick out the carrots and not eat the hay. I figured mint was healthier to be eating daily than carrots.....? some advice?

Health / Dewey has a RUNNY NOSE!
« on: March 03, 2010, 06:33:09 PM »
Yesterday Dewey was happy & spunky...he did free run for 2 hours and slept well through the night. This afternoon when I got home from work his pellet bowl was mostly empty, so he's been eating. But his nose was DRIPPING wet with a clear mucus. All down his chin, and even his little hands were wet! There was a big smear of mucus across one ledge in his cage too.
I took him out and used a tissue to gently dab his nose & hands dry, then I put him back and gave him a "cookie" (plain shredded wheat), which he ate fine as well.

I called the vet, and scheduled him in for Friday evening, but they are gonna TRY to squeeze him in tomorrow. Hopefully they can! I put up a barrier between he & Daisy's cages. So hopefully whatever is wrong with him, she doesn't get as well.

Just wanted some info/advice from the experts in the meantime... does this sound like a cold? Or is it a sign of another problem? Is there anything beneficial I can do for him while we're waiting to see the vet?

General Chat / I tried the harness & leash!
« on: March 02, 2010, 03:13:50 PM »
So after seeing the cute pics from the Beagle Expo, I bought a small harness & lead. (For Ferrets). I tried Daisy on it last night and she did great! She didn't try to chew it off or anything, she just bounced around like "woohoo! I'm out!" I followed her around with the leash as she ran here & there for a bit. After about 5 minutes I took it off, as to not stress her out on her first run with it. But I'm looking forward to using it again and pushing the time. I'm hoping she gets use to it, and even "cool with it"... it would be fun to take her out on a little walk...just to the mailbox or maybe take her to petsmart to pick out her own toys! LOL

I haven't tried it on Dewey yet. He's older and gets stressed fairly easily. I may give it a run tonight and see how he does, but if he gets upset, I will leave it alone. Daisy is much younger and probably more open to new ideas. Never know though, maybe Dewey will do just as well as Daisy. Maybe even better. He is a good boy!

Breeding 101 / I read this... is it true?!
« on: February 10, 2010, 10:29:03 PM »
Yesterday I read in a chinchilla book that chins can not get pregnant between June - October. . .is that true? They are only fertile between November - May ??

Q & A / Boy meets Girl
« on: February 08, 2010, 10:38:28 PM »
So I got my lonely Dewey boy a young female friend.
Daisy is in her own cage right now, near to Dewey's cage. They enjoy watching each other. Tonight I let Dewey out of his cage to run in the room...he ran up to Daisy's cage, and they were "kissing" through the bars. Dewey never left Daisy's side. I think they are going to get along great and would like to get them in the same cage fairly soon.
However...
The pet shop guy said Daisy was between 6-8 months old, but he didn't have an exact birth date.
I've read that you don't want a female to get pregnant until she is at LEAST 8 months old. Supposing Daisy IS 8 months, I wouldn't worry about getting her into Dewey's cage pretty soon. But if she's only 6 months, I'm thinking I may want to keep them in separate cages (and apart at play time) for another 2 months ...just in case.
But then again...
how likely is it that they will breed immediately upon getting together?
I have read some of the breeder threads and people saying their chins didn't mate for a year or more.
I KNOW Dewey is fertile because he's had kits before with his previous mate (in the care of his previous owners).
Obviously, I have no way of knowing if Daisy is fertile or not yet.

What do you think?
Is it too risky to put them together within the month?
How likely do you think they are to try to breed immediately?

(I'm not TRYING to breed them. I mostly just wanted Dewey to have a mate because he was lonely and didn't go for a male friend. If they do breed, it's fine though).

Q & A / 6 month old needs help dusting?
« on: February 07, 2010, 05:21:27 PM »
Hi, I just today brought home a 6 month old female chinchilla (Daisy). I'm hoping she will eventually warm up to my current chin, a 5 yr old male (Dewey).

Anyway, I noticed Daisy had some poops stuck to her fur. I held her and gently plucked them off, then I offered her a dust bath. She didn't know what to do with it! She just walked around in the dust, and then walked away. (It's a super pets bath house). I put her back inside, and she turned some circles on her feet, and then hopped out again. She wouldn't roll and get her fur clean. I thought this was natural instinct. Dewey LOVES to dust, so it was strange watching her pay no attention. Do I need to help her learn by offering her the bath house 2-3 times a day? Or do you think she's just kind of stressed taking in her new surroundings that she didn't feel like bathing right now, but she will when she's ready? Should I try offering her dust in an open dish..? Anyone ever had trouble getting their baby chins to dust?

General Chat / I think he needs a friend...
« on: February 07, 2010, 11:55:56 AM »
I'm thinking about getting another chinchilla today.

I have had Dewey since last June. He's a 5 yr old standard gray. He'd had a mate at his previous home, but she died giving birth. (The family had their hands full hand-raising the kits, and decided to give the dad away to a good home)...so I brought him home, and at first he was barbering himself. Having his mate die, and then being re-homed must be stressful! But he got better. I named him Dewey and he's been a really good boy. About 6 weeks later I got another male chin...I rescued him from a bad situation, and HOPED he'd be a friend to Dewey. The new chin was a 2 yr old white mosaic. I had him checked out by a vet when I got him - but I think some damage was unseen. Dewey & Schroeder never learned to get along. I tried a couple tactics I'd read about, but usually Schroeder was an instigator of trouble, and so I kept them in separate cages, but close enough to know the other was around. Even though they didn't like each other, I think it was exciting for them knowing another chin was around.

A few months ago Schroeder got sick, the vet couldn't figure out the problem, I force fed him for 4 weeks before he passed away. Dewey has gotten more attention from me since then, obviously... plus, since he's not a chewer, he gets out-of-cage time in the entire house. He LOVES running up & down the stairs. However, he seems lonely! In the past few weeks he's gotten kind of "pouty". He often just sits on top of his hay bungalow and doesn't move for hours. He doesn't pay attention to the TV anymore, he doesn't really RUN in his wheel anymore. (It's more of a seat to him now).
He still eats & poops fine, so I don't think he's sick. I think he's just lonely. I have tried rearranging his cage and getting him new toys, but it only keeps him entertained for a little while.
I have been thinking about getting him a female friend. Someone to play with at night & snuggle with during the day.
I have weighed out the pros and cons... and for awhile I felt the cons outweighed the pros...but now I am starting to feel differently, especially when I look at Dewey pouting in the corner of his huge cage alone. I have read that chinchillas are very SOCIAL and being alone can actually cause depression/illness.

Wondering if anyone had any advice in either direction....
Also, I planned to keep them in separate cages for awhile, then put the cages near each other so they could watch each other ... then eventually let them have some out-of-cage time together and see how they do. Then when I'm sure they won't hurt each other, I'll clean and re-arrange Dewey's huge cage, and put them both in there together. Is this a good way to go about it? (This is also what I've read).
Thanks for your thoughts.

Cages / Ferret Nation Cage, How to..?
« on: November 17, 2009, 02:11:26 PM »
I have a Ferret Nation Cage for my chin, Dewey. He likes it but tends to stay on one level most of the time. I think if I removed the center platform, and installed some wood ledges, he'd have more fun jumping around.
I am just not sure I CAN remove the center wiring/platform....is it possible? HOW do I do it? Will I need to unscrew most of the cage & then put it all back together again, or does it snap/pop out with a little trick?

help ferret nation owners!
Thanks!

Memorials / Saying Goodbye to Schroeder
« on: November 17, 2009, 01:05:57 PM »
Schroeder Lee Chinchilla passed away last night.
He was barely over 2 years old, but had gotten sick. Not even the vets knew what was wrong or how to help him. He battled it for 4 weeks straight before he gave up. He was a strong little guy.
I miss him, but I'm at peace knowing he isn't suffering any longer. So many hours spent forcing random remedy mixes down him with a syringe. So many belly rubs. So much money, time, frustration, and tears.

May Angels Lead you in, baby Schroedzee!
