Memorials / Punkin & Mocha
« on: August 25, 2010, 12:44:16 PM »
 ::silly::  I have to think of it this way, or I can not think of it at all.

Punkin crossed the Rainbow Bridge yesterday and joined Mocha, his first true love.  ::kiss99::  ::Lovehearts::

Many of you have seen Punkin many times ... he is on this website as well as my own many times.  He is on the Chinchilla Club On Line Show Banner.

He will be missed for years to come.

    |hugs|  Jo Ann

Punkin had an accident and broke his neck, it ended quickly and he did not suffer.

Memorials / Little Girl
« on: January 12, 2010, 05:25:01 PM »
Jamie and I had the privilege to care for a very special chin ... her name was Little Girl ...
Each time Jamie would get out of breeding, she would send Little Girl to Virginia for me to take care of her ...
When Jamie started breeding again, she would go back to Jamie in S.C.
Three weeks ago, Little Girl fell asleep for the last time and headed for the Rainbow Bridge.
I'm sure she met up with many of her fellow chins she knew over the years.
We got to talking about her and realized she was about 23 or 24 years old or older.
Jamie got her as a retired breeder over 14 years ago, so she had all the love we could give her and didn't have to worry about having kits.
She would pick and choose who she would allow to scratch her and who would not...
She would raise her chin and cock her head slightly, paciently waiting.
She wasn't a cuddlier, but loved to have you stand and talk to her.
She always came to the front of the cage and would stand at her door, wanting to be acknowledged.
She wasn't one to demand, but showed appreciation of each kindness and treat she was given.
They say you never really die, as long as someone remembers you ...
If this is true, she still has many years to go.
We will will love and miss her ... for many years to come.

Added:
Below is a picture of her when she was in her late teens.
She never did look ''old''.   :)

General Chat / Considering ...
« on: January 12, 2010, 01:37:18 PM »
 ::silly::  I'm thinking about making a few chinchilla things, but want to get your input on them.
Please be honest ... I can take criticism/suggestions as well as I dish it out.   :)

These are strictly for use with a chin outside of the cage, not in the cage.
Please let me know your thoughts and possible idea of a price on each (just to be able to set an approximate value on them at the raffle).
I will add new ones as I do them, so check back to see them.

Any other ideas you might come up with for me to make, shout 'em out.

I am hand crocheting and/or knitting them personally.

 ::(:Down::  Jo Ann

If the doctor will permit it and I feel up to it, I will be going to the show Saturday and will raffle them off, if permitted.  If so, half the proceeds will be donated to the new Empress Division of the Southern Unit of the Ohio Branch ECBC 1st Annual ECBC Show.   (Got to check with them first ... please let me know what you think of the different items.)

I hope to be able to go and to see you all there.

 ::highfive::  Jo Ann

The kit supplement holder is used by putting a new kit into the holder and allow it to go to the other end ... close off the bottom with your little finger and use your thumb and pointer finger to hold the top and keep his/her front paws inside the holder {a napkin or paper towel can be placed under the chin of the kit to catch any over flow of formula}.

The Play Hutch is to be used outside of the cage for your little one to run in and hide.   :)

General Chat / My Garden of Shame
« on: August 15, 2009, 06:59:57 AM »
 ::silly::  Spending some time in the country during my life time, I thought I was a fairly good gardener.  This year, I planted corn, tomatoes, artichoke, broccoli, cucumbers, cauliflower, bell peppers and cantaloupe.  But, as usuall to much in a small area ... I need to live out in the country again.   ::)

I have found used chinchilla bedding to be a wonderful fertilizer.  I dump the bedding in one area and allow it to decompose, then add it to the garden areas and till it into the dirt.  It's worked wonderful over the years.

We always put out corn for the deer, raccoons, chipmunks, squirrels and other animals, going through about 100 to 150 pounds a week.  (Not to mention the bird seed.)

I have a resident gardener this year ... a little chipmunk.  He planted corn ... corn from the feeders.  He was a little late in planting it ... almost a month after I planted mine.  But, mother nature taught him well ... he planted his corn in the chinchilla bedding mulch pit.

Below are pictures of our corn.  The chipmonk's corn is named 0CM.jpg.  Out done by a 4 inch tall little critter!   :blush2:  (I know where I'll plant mine next year!)

 ::howdythere::  Jo Ann

P.S.  ::think::  Makes you wonder if this little chipmonk knows more than we do ... maybe a long or hard winter ahead?  Or just one that wants to make sure there's enough for him to store later?

Health / Chinchilla Basics
« on: July 18, 2009, 06:57:18 AM »
 ::silly::   Let's go over some basics with our chins/kits ...

 I was just going through some pictures and noticed a picture of a kit in a dust bath ... the kit looks almost new born ... this is a big no-no.

1) Momma and kits can NOT have a dust bath until the kits are 10 days old.  Momma can not because the dust bath dust can still get inside of her (until she is completely healed) and it can set up an infection.  Kits' eyes are not as responsive as they should be and their lungs are not as strong yet ... at under 10 days of age.

2)  Daddy chin must be removed from the cage momma and kits are in for at least the first 10 days after the kits are born.  Removing him a week prior to her due date is safer.  Momma goes back into season shortly after the kits are born and if she gets pregnant while nursing the kits, this would be much to much of a strain on the mom's system and resources.  All (momma, the litter she is nursing and the litter she is trying to develop) would suffer.

3)  Kits need to be in a cage that has wire that is 1/2" x 1" or less (not 1x1) and is single level.  Kits can crawl/fall out of a cage that has wires that are 1/2" x 1" or larger.  When kits are born, they are born eyes open, fully furred and usually playing within an hour.  Within the first 24 to 48 hours a kit will usually attempt to climb to the top of the cage ... they can climb up, but not down.  When they reach the top, they turn loose and fall to the bottom ... if the cage is more than 15" high, the fall can kill the kit.

I am sure there are other things and questions you may have concerning Momma and Daddy Chin and their kits ... please, post them.

Around here, no one will fuss at you or laugh at you ...

There are no dumb questions ...
Only regrets that they were not ask ...

General Chat / I found this ...
« on: May 21, 2009, 02:43:05 PM »
 ::silly::   As most of you know ... I'm forever looking up things and googling subjects pertaining to chinchillas ... Well, I don't know how, but, I ran across this and almost flipped out ... until I realized it was satire ... not a true event.
Take a seat and hold on to your hats while reading this:   Do keep in mind it is not a true event, but a satire.
CANADA'S SOURCE FOR HUMOUR, PARODY, AND SATIRE

Quote
"I Don't Know Why Your Pet Chinchilla Died."
Pettiness Won't Bring Back Your Puny Pet

EX-GIRLFRIEND'S APARTMENT--You can blame me right now if you want to, but really, it's not my fault that your pet chinchilla died. Yes, I promised that I would take care of your furry little rat-rodent while you were away at that fat camp--I mean weight-loss retreat. But honestly, did you expect me to feed that thing every week?

I don't see how I could have contributed to your chinchilla's death.

You can cry all you want, but none of that is going to bring back Fuzzy, or Fluffy, or Stir-Fry. Of course I remember his name! He was as important to me as he was to you. But really, accusing me isn't going to bring your poor excuse of a pet--I mean tender companion--back to life.

I don't know what could've happened that might have led to his demise. I gave him the best possible care and attention those two times I came over during your two month absence. It's more likely he died of old age. Chinchillas only have a lifespan of a few months, don't they?

Your chinchilla certainly wasn't a very friendly pet. It didn't get along with my rottweiler--I don't even think it made an effort to be friends. It kept running away and making those weird chirping chinchilla sounds. Oh really, you know that Killer's bark is worse than his bite--except when he bites. Maybe if your chinchilla wasn't so jittery every time another animal was in the room it would still be alive today. I bet it worried itself to death.

Yes, I followed your instructions. Hey, but how was I supposed to know that chinchillas couldn't drink beer? Was there anything on your list that said "don't feed my chinchilla beer?" No. And besides, beer is full of natural chinchilla-friendly ingredients like barley and hops. I'm sure he didn't get sick because of that. It might've been when I spun him a little too fast in his plastic mobile chinchilla ball. Oh come on! I was just teaching the little fellow about the law of centrifugal force.

I certainly kept your little friend clean. I gave him a bubblebath in the toilet, and dried him off in the microwave--and he seemed to like it, the way he was jumping around all happy and stuff. Well I needed to wash him after he fell into that bucket of paint. And I didn't really need to bathe him because the acetone had already removed most of the paint. And it gave him a nice shiny coat--well, the coat that was still left after I shaved off the matted paint clumps.

No I wasn't trying to suffocate your precious pet. That's preposterous! I just thought it was a good idea to wrap the entire cage in Saran Wrap, because that little sh-t--err, cute little guy--was tossing sawdust and chinchilla turds everywhere. I was only trying to keep your apartment clean! Hey, did you know that those things look just like raisins? They don't taste like them though...Anyhow, it's a big cage, and there had to have been plenty of air inside it. Maybe your chinchilla had some rare chinchilla lung cancer or something.

No, I wasn't jealous of your chinchilla. I loved the little furball. Think about it. If I had wanted to get rid of your little treasure, I would've given him to my dad to use in his crab traps--I mean I would've found a nice family to adopt him. I loved Stir-Fry like he was my own. And to show how much I cared about him, I'll buy you a big television to fill the huge area his frickin' cage took up.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 This is a kid-friendly site, so I will not post the URL to the site this was on ... it had a few other things on it that I would definitely not consider family oriented or kid friendly.  As wild as this satire is, I have known of/heard of things that people were actually stupid enough to do, or did, or that are similar, to those that are listed here ... even with the 'attitude' the writer appears to have, I'd almost bet this is a person that has chinchillas/raises chinchillas or knows a chinchilla breeder that has heard of such ... to much actual knowledge there of what a chinchilla can not have, or should not be exposed to, is listed in the satire ... they knew quiet a bit about chinchillas or they could not have come up with so much of this.  (need for regular feedings, natural air flow in the cage, frightened of other animals, especially dogs that bark loud, the fact that it is in the rodent family, the plastic mobile ball, references to the flinging of bedding and poop out of the cage ... and the no-nos on getting a chin wet ... and the part about the open can of paint and the bubble bath ...the reference to natural chinchilla-friendly ingredients and the list didn't say it couldn't have beer ... a reminder just because we don't see it says not to do something that it is still NOT OK to do it ... makes you think hard about your next list of dos and don'ts you make out for your chin-sitter, doesn't it?   :)
Even knowing it was satire and not the real thing ... I did have to snicker a bit when it came to the part that said: "Hey, did you know that those things (in reference to chin poop) looks just like raisins? They don't taste like them though."    :D
Well, I just had to share this ... hope no one is offended ... remember it was on a site noted for it's satire.
General Breeder Chat / MOTHER NATURE UNLEASHED!
« on: May 01, 2009, 08:41:07 AM »
 ::silly::   Let's get a list of emergency supplies and plans you have for your chinchilla(s), should there be a power outage, a hurricane, a flood, a tornado, or a fire.
Everyone's ideas are welcome!
How will you transport them, should you have to leave, due to the weather?
How fast could you round them up for transporting them?   Something to practice!
Do you have enough carry cages?
Do you know where they would be welcome to stay over night or for a few days, if need be?  Most human shelters do not allow you to bring your pets.
Do you have food and supplies ready to grab and run at a moments notice?
What all do you think you would need for them?
What are you going to keep your chinchilla emergency supplies in?
Where will you keep it?
Be prepaired ... expect the worst ... be thankful when it does not happen!   But be ready if it does.
In emergency situations most people panic ... for your chin's sake, you can not afford to do that.
Be prepaired!
