Q & A / Chinnie chew suggestions
« on: May 03, 2017, 03:30:31 PM »
I feel like I've ran out of options as far as chew toys for my chinnie goes.    ::shrug::

I think Stormy has gotten bored with the easy to find wood block type toys since he hardly touches them.  He won't even test chew pumice stones, and has never been too fond of cuttlebones.  The only chews he seems to be interested anymore are apple twigs, and he seems ambivalent towards lava bites.  I've seen a lot of loofah chews in stores and online whenever I've gone looking for new stuff for him, but I'm yet to try them because the texture of them look as if they would have an uncomfortable/scratchy mouth feel.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to new toys to introduce to him.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Memorials / Lucien
« on: February 14, 2015, 04:23:54 PM »
My sweet baby fuzzy, Lucien, died yesterday.  He lived with me for around ten years, and proved to be one of the most laid back chinnies I know of.  He was a little old man, but always sweet and wonderful.  I miss him so much.

General Chat / Looking for water bottle recomendations
« on: September 05, 2011, 08:47:17 AM »
I've about had it with Super Pet water bottles.  I recently purchased one of their glass chew proof bottles, and I can't get it to dispense water at all.  This is the second time I've seen this with their bottles--the other being a friend who bought one who got the same results.  I was previously happy with them, I have one that I've been using for quite some time that still works perfectly.  I'm caring for a friend's chinnie who needs a new bottle, and now I'm at a loss as to what kind to buy.

Does any one have any favorite types of chinnie water bottles?  I would prefer glass, or one that comes with a chew guard, since this lil guy is a chew monster.

General Chat / Chinchilla not chewing...suggestions needed
« on: March 07, 2011, 12:20:43 AM »
My chinnie has gone from devouring his chew toys to hardly touching any of them.  I have tried buying a variety of toys in case he was just getting tired of his usual ones, buying only the ones that seemed to be his favorites, and rubbing the insides of a raisin on them.  He won't really touch the new toys, other than a test nibble or two, he hardly chews his favorites (he used to chew them into nothingness in an hour or two), and he will only chew off the raisin flavor off and won't touch the toy afterward.

Does anyone have any ideas of either kinds of chews to try or something I can do to make what he has interesting/enticing for him again?  I have seen something about sprinkling bath dust over his food to help wear down his back teeth (he mostly refuses to eat his hay), is that something worth trying?

I'm starting to get worried about his teeth--he seems mostly ok, but he does seem to have started having minor problems.  My husband and I are down on our luck and can't afford to take him to a vet (we'll find a way if he gets bad enough), so I'd love to find something that will help him.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

General Chat / Chinchilla not eating hay
« on: November 19, 2010, 09:26:09 AM »
My chinchilla has me pretty confused.  For the past couple of months, he has gone from devouring his hay to hardly touching it.  Everything else seems ok--he's eating his food, still getting super excited for his treats, is drinking fine, and still has some interest in his chews, despite his super picky attitude about them.  I've been feeding him lose timothy hay for years without a problem.  From what I can tell, his teeth seem to be fine, and his behavior hasn't changed--he's still the sweet, strong, silent type.  Aside from him hardly touching his hay, the only other change I can see is his poops are different, but I assume that is from the lack of roughage in his diet.

Does anyone have any clue why he could be doing this and what I could do about it?  I've been thinking about switching him to hay cubes to see if that will make a difference, but I'm unsure of what else to try.

I was just carving pumpkins with a friend and it got me wondering if chinnies can have pumpkin seeds.

General Chat / Chinny + Dog, how to expalin it isn't a good idea
« on: July 05, 2006, 07:56:17 PM »
My roomates want to get a dog, a puppy to be exact.  I know it isn't a good idea, but I can't make them understand.  I expressed my concerns as soon as the first mention of them getting the pooch was uttered, but that didn't stop them from bringing it home tonight so they could introduce the two of them.

In short, Lucien doesn't like the dog.  If he wasn't lunging at the sides of his cage, he was frozen.  He didn't seem to mind as long as the dog was asleep or being still and quiet.  I know them bringing this dog home to stay is a bad idea, but I can't get them to understand it.

One of the roomies is already trying to come up with ways to keep them apart, but he doesn't realize out of sight doesn't mean out of mind...or out of smell for my lil guy.  He's convinced more exposure would help, but I don't want to put Lucien through that kind of stress.  If I could keep him upstairs, I wouldn't be as concerned, but I can't...its always too hot on the 2nd floor for him.

My question is:  How can I make my roommate understand them bringing a dog into the apartment is a bad idea?  Stating simple facts isn't working thus far...I've argued as to why its a bad idea, of how it could effect my chinny, that keeping the dog out of the room Lucien in probably won't make a difference.  I'm out of ideas other than losing my temper, which I really don't want to do.
