General Chat / I would like everyone's opinion
« on: August 18, 2008, 03:25:24 PM »
As most of you know, I just recently had a litter of Chinchilla kits.  :::grins::
They (the parents) may or may not have breed again on Sunday - I guess I'll find that out in a few months now wont I?  ::shrug::

There are a few things I'd like to say and ask. The purpose of this breeding was educational for me. I am going to school to become a Vet Tech and I know there are so many people out there that don't know squat about Chinchillas in the Vet world. I would like to know about them so that I can be of even greater use when the time comes. Of course I took my time pairing the two I had; I didn't just throw any ol' Chinnies together.

Peekers and Boo really seemed to love each other. Now what I am questioning is this:
Do I get Boo neutered and let them live back with each other? (This is what I was planning on doing)
OR
Do I keep both of my kits (I was only planning on keeping one) and house the boy with his father and the girl with her mother?
If I do that do you think that Peekers and Boo will be lonely for each other?

UGH, such a situation  ::think::

Any and all opinions are going to be VERY much appreciated!!!!  ::nod::

Breeding 101 / Mating Plug? Heat Plug?
« on: August 17, 2008, 04:26:21 AM »
Ok, so I have a question and I hope this doesn't sound extremely stupid...

Peekers and Boo have been separated since the birth of their kits. They had one supervised play time where neither one even showed an interest in mating. Everyone just ran around with each other - no mating.

Last night I decided to put them back in with each other. It has been 10 days, so there was no immediate breed back.
I've been in this room all night and they said hello to each other, but for the most part, the two of them did their own thing in there.
I noticed the two of them sitting by each other eating food and then I noticed that Peekers was becoming annoyed with Boo. He was showing the signs of wanting to mate (getting a little extra close and grooming her)...she didn't much care.
I saw them mate the first time they mated back in April...so I'm well aware of what this looks like, AND Boo had hiccups after it was all over with.
Back to last night though, I saw how Peekers just wanted to ignore him, so I decided to take him out and put him back "down stairs" in the cage. When I went to touch Peekers she had something on her back. I thought maybe it was a poop, but when I took her out there was a waxy substance smooshed on her.
Now here is my question.
Is this the "heat plug"??? Did she expel it and get it stuck to her? OR, quite obviously the other question, did they mate? They must have been extremely quite and low key about it if they did because I never saw or heard a thing...things were very quiet in there tonight, no one was even jumping around. I had to cut it out of her pretty fur  :-[
I'm just confused, how am I supposed to tell the difference between the two of these, ESPECIALLY when the dang thing was a mini pancake on her back!  >:(
And now I feel like maybe I shouldn't have put them back in so soon.  I know some people only wait 3 days, but - oh I don't know...
I'm totally fine with it if she is pregnant again. I will probably stop breeding her after that though.
Looking forward to everyone's input.

Web site Reviews / My two blogs
« on: August 13, 2008, 10:38:53 PM »
Here are two links:

One is to my Chinchilla blog
http://popcorndancers.blogspot.com/

One is to the other blog I keep about my animals
http://thechurkeys.blogspot.com/

I'll be short on posting pictures a lot like I have in the past only because my camera just crapped out on me. Every single time I REALLY need it, it stops working. UGH - the luck I have.

Feel free to subscribe. Or you can let me know on here if you want to be added to the mailing list and every time I update you'll get the email about it.

Enjoy! ;)

Conformation and Quality / Chinchilla fur
« on: August 13, 2008, 08:33:33 PM »
Hopefully I am in the right spot.
My question is:
Does Chinchilla fur change with age?
I know that it can oxidize...which I'm still not 100% sure on (meaning, I don't know what causes it and all of the info, but I am interested in knowing)
And does the "quality" change with age? Can a chinchilla that once had really great fur, start to look a little "ruff around the edges"??? ::shrug::
Fur really interests me at the present moment.

General Chat / What does he look like?
« on: August 13, 2008, 12:15:03 AM »
I've been reading about the 3 types of Chinchillas. I've been wondering what types seem more influential in my different Chins.
My Male Chinnie is built a little differently than my females are. I'm thinking he must have some of the Costina influence in his genes.
What do you all think?

Look at the pictures below and you can compare it to the pictures on this website: http://www.sewardbreeders.com/page8.html

I wouldn't say his ears are as large as the Costina, but his face shows a more narrow trend, something I'm hoping that pairing him with my female helped with in their offspring (I'm hoping that their kits will be an improvement of that and lean towards Peekers).

The pictures below show Boo - my Homo Beige male. You can see the narrowness more in the picture where he's eating his hay. Please excuse his messy fur, he's NOT in his prime right now!

Boo will be 6 on Sunday, so this isn't something that he'll outgrow. Peekers' face was a bit more narrow as a kit, but it's rounded a lot with age.

Looking forward to input!

Guestbook / Hi all!
« on: August 11, 2008, 01:21:48 AM »
I'm from Minnesota and I'm brand new to this board. I wanted to be a part of a community that loves Chins just as much as I do!  ;)
My Chinchilla Peekers and her mate Boo just had their first litter of kits on August 8th =)
They are separated at the moment and Boo misses her like crazy even though he's right below her  :-[
Besides that I have 5 dogs and 5 cats - my own little "zoo"

New Births / My Very First Kits
« on: August 11, 2008, 01:06:05 AM »
On August 8th my very first litter of kits were born  ;) to my Mosaic female - Peekers and my Beige (Homo) male - Boo. They are gorgeous!
The first born was a male. He looks to be a PW, but he has a marking over one eye and on his back, which makes me wonder - will he be a golden mosaic? Any help with that would be nice! We'll see as he gets older.
Then there is the female. She is a really pretty Beige (het. of course)
Peekers is doing a great job with the mothering and Boo is below them so he gets to still see them run around.
They weighed 45.5g at birth and the little girl is already up to 70.9g and the male is at 49.7g  :::grins::
The pictures below:
The one in my hand is the female
The one on the bed is the male
