ChinchillaBreeding.com Hints and Tips / Standard First Game Strategy

Since we know breeding mutations to mutations will result in lesser quality babies than breeding to standards I try to get my standards to 10 first and then use those to create all of the other colors.

Reference Board / Introducing the New Chinchilla
« on: December 16, 2012, 10:11:22 AM »
When you get a new chinchilla it is best to introduce them slowly over time. Placing a new chin in the cage with your original one right away will usually cause a fight. In fact, chinchillas can fight to the death. Some matches take a bit longer than others but with a bit of patience and a few techniques pairing them up is possible. These techniques should be used for same sex pairs as well as for male/female pairs. Many pairs will go together easily, others may take a few attempts to make friends.

Note: Pairing chinchillas of the opposite sex in a cage will result in breeding. Do not breed unless your breeders are pedigreed and you fully understand the risks and responsibilities of breeding. Make sure your chinchillas' gender has been accurately determined before you begin.

1. Place their cages side by side for a week so they can meet through the cage bars. Leave a small space between the cages so they won't be able to bite the others' nose. Once they seem OK with one another and are no longer 'fence fighting' it is time for step two.

2. Before you put your chinchillas together, place them in each others' cages for about an hour. Make sure you leave the original bedding and houses, ect. This way they can get used to each others' scent.

3. Place the most aggressive, outgoing chinchilla into a freshly cleaned cage with the other one. **Make sure you do this on a day when you can be there for a long while to watch for fighting. If they fight you will have to separate them and try again. You can expect the chinchillas to sniff each other, play chase, bark or squeak. If you have a female she may stand up and shoot urine. If they begin jumping on each other aggressively, and/or biting, separate them and try again in a few days. If your chinchillas don't seem to go together using the above method try placing them in a brand new cage with fresh bedding that doesn't have the smell of either animal. Neither one will have the "home turf" advantage.

Remember to go slow and keep constant supervision over a new pair. Rushing a union can cause disaster, but with slow, careful planning you will have a loving pair of chinchillas before you know it!

Reference Board / White Teeth
« on: December 16, 2012, 10:09:39 AM »
All chinchillas are born with white teeth. As they grow, their teeth turn a nice yellowish-orange.
If your ADULT chinchilla begins to develop whiter teeth it needs calcium. This
is usually only a problem in pregnant or nursing mothers. Calf Manna is a great source of
Calcium and can be mixed with her regular pellets. We give all of our chinchillas a mix
of 4 parts Chin Pellets to 1 part Calf Manna. If you don't have Calf Manna you can give
her 1/4 of a TUMS with calcium antacid tablet a day.

Reference Board / Drooling
« on: December 16, 2012, 10:08:56 AM »
If you notice that your chinchilla is constantly wet under the chin and begins to smell a
bit sour it may have a problem with its teeth. You will need to see a vet. You can check
your chinchilla's teeth by looking at the 4 front ones to be sure that they meet in a straight
line in the front and are not broken or split. On rare occasions a chinchilla can crack or
split a tooth and it will need to be clipped. If the teeth are meeting at an angle
your chinchilla may have problems with its back teeth. Tooth problems are best handled
by an experienced vet.

Reference Board / Oral Antibiotics
« on: December 16, 2012, 10:08:02 AM »
Baytril is the most commonly recommended antibiotic given to chinchillas.

If your chinchilla is taking oral antibiotics you MUST give yogurt with live cultures as well. The
yogurt should be given between doses, not at the same time as the medication. This will
keep up your chinchilla’s strength and replace any natural bacteria that the medicine has
taken away.

Reference Board / coughing and/or has a runny/crusty nose
« on: December 16, 2012, 10:06:32 AM »
If you notice your chinchilla is coughing and/or has a runny/crusty nose, a trip to the vet
is a must ASAP. It could be a respiratory infection. If it is caught fast enough your
chinchilla will need some antibiotics and will recover just fine. However, once a
chinchilla gets too sick it can be very hard to get them well and death will occur.

Reference Board / Eye Problems
« on: December 16, 2012, 10:05:37 AM »
A vet visit is always a good idea to determine whether or not the eye has been scratched or damaged in any way.

Chinchillas often have minor eye irritations from dust or shavings. This will usually produce a
little white gunk in the corner of the eye and some minor watering of the eye.
Minor eye irritations can usually be cured with tea. Make a cup of warm tea following
the directions on the box. (Be sure its not hot enough to burn) Dip a cotton ball in the tea
and hold it over the eye for a few minutes. You should see an improvement by the next
morning.

Sometimes they will poke an eye with a piece of hay, an edge of something in the cage, or the finger of another chinchilla.
If the eye shows any sign of whiteness or if the chinchilla can't/won't open the eye see a vet right away.

If they gets worse within 24 hours see a vet.  Some problems need antibiotics or are signs of a bigger tooth problem.
