SO sorry for your lose. It is never easy saying good buy to a loved pet. 23 years is a good long life. You did a great job she must have lived a great life with you. I hope you in time open your heart up to another chin that could use your love and care. So many chins looking for loving homes.

All but one have found homes well out of the 50 Chins 5 had to be put down. I still have one old male that I am treating for an ear and eye infection he is recovering well. That is the only one left.

That's great. The closest that I have to a rescue was my first chinchilla that I found on craigslist. He was in pretty bad shape when I got him but that wasn't obvious until he developed symptoms of malocclusion and had to be put down. I had him for about six months. He was not tame and could barely be handled. He actually sprayed although he was a male, bit hard, ran out of the cage when I opened the door. He had so many horrible habits. My other two chins are a dream compared to this one. I loved him though and really hated to see him go. I learned so much too and saw a lot of improvement in him before it was over.

Aww that sounds like a rescue story to me. Sounds like you helped him enjoy the end of his life. Two of my rescue had to be put down due to Malocclusion.

This little guy did really well starting eating and drink perfectly. He went off to a new home. BUT with this last batch of forsters I am keeping a elderly female that is missing a foot. She does not get around as well as Tripod did but she is really really old 16 or older is my guess.

She eats well and enjoyed exploring outside her cage. She did get tiered quickly seeing that she is an old lady. She is loving her new life. She will stay with me till her last days.

We call her Mima since she was part of the breeding herd and old it is safe to say she is a great great great great grandma to many chins.

Could be brain damage. He is almost fully blind. I found a lady that was willing to work with this chin. So he was adopted out.  She has cared for elderly humans and will do her best with this guy.

On to the next problem. Fungus...... I have this male that has fur loss around both his eyes. Everything I have read says fungus. Him and his friend are in another room far away from my healthy chins. I am going to try the fungal powder in the dust bath and see how that goes.

General Chat / Do you do Chin rescue?
« on: October 14, 2017, 08:21:07 PM »
I have posted a bunch on here about my froster chins. I have 14 left and I do not think it will be easy to find homes for these guys. All but 4 are old or have a problem. I did find my 3 legged chin a home so I will not give up hope.

So I had 50 Chins to find homes for 2 had to be put down. I only have 14 chins left but I am getting ready to keep at least 10 of the elderly ones. These guys are a mess and I am taking it one day at a time.

So have any of you ever fostered or helped a chin rescue? has anyone ever had to re-home a breeding heard?

I would love to hear your rescue stories. Even if it was just one chin you helped.

It has been very rewarding doing this and if I find all 14 chins a home I will rescue more unwanted chins. These little animals got me good. I love them. I said I would not keep any when I first sign up for this. So far I kept 2 and I think I will keep 2 more. I will also keep the old ones for as long as I have to. So I might just be a retirement home for chins.  These guys have found a safe home here with me.

PS. If you live in Nor Cal or Nor NV and are looking to adopt a chinchilla in need let me know.

Here are some of the ones that have found happy homes.

Even if you don't get them to live in the same cage together just having another chin in the cage next to them is nice. They love being around other chins. out of the 40 rescues I have had only 2 females fight and not get along. My males have been a bit more annoying to to pair up. Each one is different. Personality just clash sometimes.

good luck .

I have my last batch of rescues 14 sad old chins. This is a rough batch it will not be easy to place them almost all of them have problems or are elderly.

So the one I want to talk about today is a old male. I was told he got into a fight years ago and his eye was damaged. Yeah his eye looks dead. This same Chin will run in a fast circle stop and looks dizzy. He is old 10 or 15 years old would be my guess but all that info is lost.

He eats and gets around but I wonder if this running thing is caused by something more.

here is his eye.

His poor fur.

He has been good about taking a dust bath so that will help.

Aneth that often will kill her kidneys eventually. By the time you notice the teeth need done, the chin has been in pain for a while. THen the procedure plus recovery every 3 months... thats more than half the chins live in misery. Its really not fair to the chin to continue your current treatment plan. Any vet that willingly does dental work without aneth is going against the avma code of ethics and personally I wouldnt trust them

I agree with this. You are just causing more problems in the long run. There is only so much you can do before it gets to the point where quality of life is an issue. One of my rescues came to me with very very advanced Malocclusion. He was put down.  I am now freaked out that all of my rescue have it or will have it. I warn everyone that adopts them about it. After seeing how bad it can get when left untreated I understand you wanting to help your chin. There is only so much you can do. Just give your chin the best life you can and know your time with her might not be as long. That's what I do.

meet Tripod. I put a little bowl of food low for him and he is doing well. He gets around well. He is looking better and seems to be more active already. I am looking for cages for him. He is up for adoption but I think I might end up keeping him.

Here is Tripod. Look at his left leg you will see he is missing a foot. He loves to sit like this with his 2 front paws on the wood and resting on his end. I made him this little wooden hut. He can even hop on it.

Sorry for your loss. These little animals are so easy to get attached to.

My rescues have been all separated from their mates. They were all part of a breeding herd. I do not know the age of my rescues. All that info was lost when our Aunt passed. She had been breeding since 1999. All I know is I have all adults and I have not had much problem making new pairs. As Long as the territory is neutral. You have to give them time to get to know each other too. You can teach an old chin new tricks that is a fact. Mine were NEVER pets. Now my little guy Nibbler is the best pet and he has to be 5+ years old.

I would find a rescue or breeder to help you find a good match. Females pair up well with other females if done right. I have had best luck pairing up females than I have had with males. Male just want to fight. Some females fight but most of the time they are passive aggressive and that can be bad too.

I am all for keeping pairs or more of Chins. I think they do better with a friend. Yes they will live fine alone but life is better with a friend. UNLESS you have lots of time and spend it all with your chin. If you can be your chins friend it will be fine.

I am happy to report the one with the missing foot is eating Timothy hey. I don't know if he was getting any hey. I am not sure he can even reach the food the way the cage was set up. I am going to get him some alfalfa Seeing him eat gives me hope. Thanks.

He I can get him in good healthy I might have to keep him.

So I got another batch of rescues. After I rehome these I will have only 14 left to find homes for. So far this has been very rewarding I have been able to place some chins in some very loving homes. It has also been heart breaking too.

out of my first batch I had to put down 2 Chins due to very bad Malocclusion. Now I have one beige that is thin and I not looking the best. On top of that I have a skinny one with a missing foot. One Chin I left but should have taken has a really really bad eye it is cloudy and big.

With this new one that is missing a foot I would like to fatten him up is I can. I am not sure if I should try and save him but I feel like I should. I am keeping the sad beige one to see if he will get better with more care. He takes dust bathes now.

I freaked out today because this morning I went into check on them and did not see them. Turns out they were both smashed in the little hut together. Nibbler never in that before. He would never go in there with Sassy.
