Yes! A lot of people don't realize all corn is GMO. I stopped eating corn and soy 15 yrs ago. We try and keep the chins away from GMO's too.

Our vet gave us Oxbow critical care and reading the ingredients it was all GMO's. When our chin had her teeth trimmed she wouldn't eat so we mixed some organic oatmeal, organic baby food, organic yogurt, organic molasses, and a splot of honey, mixed and put it in a syringe put her in a towel and she ate it no problem. She ended up liking the hand feeding maybe because she liked being immobilized in the towel she felt safe.  We also gave her a little watered down Pedialyte which she liked, it rinsed down her oatmeal and kept her hydrated.

I'm going to take him to our exotic animal specialist in a couple months when the female (Bebzee) has her tooth spurs filed down again. She usually goes every 3 - 5 months. I'll bring the eye drops and the male (Mouse) and see what the vet thinks about his eyes and using the eye drops on him. I'll update everyone. Oh I didn't know about the Ocluvet eye drops. Thanks for telling me about them. I will bring those up to the vet also.

My brother originally bought the drops for my fathers cataracts as an option before surgery. He only used them once or twice and then I saw they could also be used on animals so I started the male chinchilla on them. I think my brother paid $25 a bottle and there are two bottles in each package. The chins eyes look soooooooo much better!!! And he can see better because now he sees me coming with the drops and he runs before he would just sit there. His eyes are much brighter and clearer and so far no side effects that I am seeing.

Health / Chinchilla Cataract topical N-acetyl-L-carnosine eye drops

Just a note to let chinchilla owners know if your chinchilla is developing cataracts there are human / animal cataract eye drops that may help. Vision Clarity Eye Drops. Here's the direct link.

I have a 10 yr old male chinchilla with cataracts in both eyes, one cataract is more advanced than the other, so for the past 2 days I have been applying a drop in each eye twice a day. There is no burning because the PH is so low and he doesn't seem to mind them at all. Hopefully the cataract will start to dissolve soon. I just wanted to put this out there since I was told by my vet that there isn't much that can be done for cataracts and the chins can go totally blind. I was happy to see this alternative to try.

Our exotic vet told us that the roots can grow into the skull if left untreated but that's not usually what she sees. Most owners just shave the teeth every few months and the chins live a good long life. This is our exotic vet. She's wonderful with chins.

Our female chin has the tooth problems. Her chest was wet all the time and she couldn't eat and was drastically losing weight, pawing at her mouth. We took her to an exotic specialist who did the same thing with her teeth as your chin. We had to take her every 3 months to have her teeth re-shaved and now this last time its been 4 months and she's putting on weight with no problems as of recently. Your vet may not be finding all the spurs. When you got the tooth shaving done were you given antibiotics? We had to give ours antibiotics for about 2 weeks every time she has her teeth redone. Also, what we noticed is that it took 3 spur shavings over 10 months for the vet to find all the spurs so even though she was better she wasn't 100 % until this last shaving. We paid $65 for each tooth shaving visit. This is why we decided not to mate her because we don't want to pass on her tooth spurs to her offspring. Note to all chin owners: Please do not ever mate chins that have health problems.
