Well, my dog/child are a lot like my chinchillas, only the running around in circles is in a bigger area & usually around me while I try to walk...and they're both a lot louder. The cat is just kind of wherever she wants to be, sleeping on stuff...
My mom always had a dog when I was growing up & my brother always had cats so I can't imagine not having one.

I remember being 16 & thinking, "I'm never having kids, they're way too much work! I'll stick with my rodents" (only a hamster & a chinchilla at the time.) :P Funny how 5 years later I', pretty much thinking the same thing, but instead it's "another kid."

I totally forgot! I need to make a checklist or something before another litter comes...

New Births / Button had babies!

After waiting an eternity, Button finally had her second litter yesterday! It looks like either a boy & girl or two boys, but I hate trying to say for sure right away  :P either way, look how cute these guys are! (I tried posting pictures but the files are too big :( sorry)

I am a bit worried because they're smaller than any litters I've had before, but they're far more active than any of the other newborns were...

Ok good. I have one boy who should be an ebony carrier since all of his siblings are ebonies but he turned out to be more of a violet & his fur keeps getting more white in it with age, which I think is a sign of some rare mutation  :-\ I haven't looked into the different mutations in a long time since I only have one pair that's actually producing at the moment.

I hadn't seen anything about the black to black lethal factor before reading this  ??? would the black be homo ebony or is there a different black that I'm not aware of? I currently have ebonies, violets & a black velvet so I'm a little worried now that I didn't do enough research before picking my pairs & such...

This is a late response, but I don't know of any studies but I have noticed that the people I've known that have had house pets usually do better with children than people that either had outside pets or no pets...the people that didn't have pets seem to get irritated faster.

I've also noticed (and discussed it with my mom a bit) that people that like dogs do better with younger kids and people that like cats tend to do better with older kids/teenagers. Until my daughter was born I never really liked either, nor was I interested in children for that matter, but I've always liked rodents...I think people like me who enjoy caged animals more are the people that would be fine without being parents, but that's just a theory. I have a cat & a dog right now (in addition to a rabbit & 8 chinchillas) and I've realized that I used to like my dog a lot more before my kid could walk/run and now I like my cat more. Not saying I don't love my daughter, I just don't think I have the right personality to handle toddlers very well.

I was never told any of this could be fatal as long as he was eating, but I looked it up the morning after he died & found a bunch of forum posts about seizures & dogs dying from it but they were all pretty old  :-\ he was almost 2.
That same day I put some of the flea & tick prevention stuff on my pug because I can't handle sitting with a dying animal, especially if it's dying from something preventable...

The dog was mini-dachshund sized even though he was supposed to be a standard sized one; I wonder if that could've added to it somehow.  ::shrug:: The possibly good news is that my pug might be pregnant from him so his genes might be passed on. I can't afford to take her to a vet to get her checked for a few weeks, but she's a lot calmer than usual & acting like she was when she was pregnant before; with any luck, she is & won't have a miscarriage (again) or have any issues having puppies.

Maybe like a near-death experience...my grandma got a lot nicer after having a mini-stroke so maybe it's the same principle  rofl

A whole year?

I think he might have eaten something sprayed with bug spray or it got into his water...I'll avoid ranting about the bug spray because I've already thrown a few fits about it being sprayed in my apartment since I have a ton of animals & a small child, but I can't imagine it having just been the Lyme disease since he was getting better...

Everybody is back to normal except one that is just a bit friendlier so I guess it all worked out ok... ::shrug::

Apparently he wasn't responding to the antibiotics as well as we thought. I sat with him while he had a few seizures last night & shortly after his owner got home & picked him up he died  :'( saddest 3 hours of my life.

Finally figured out he has Lyme disease so we're taking care of it. He's back to eating but hasn't gained any weight back yet.

He did start eating some Spanish rice I gave him an hour ago or so, but I'll definitely get some meat for him and keep trying to give him his dog food.

 :) Thanks

Other Pets / Problems with dachshund
« on: July 15, 2013, 12:27:12 PM »
Well, since my pug went into heat about 3 or 4 months ago, my boyfriend's dachshund has pretty much refused to eat or drink almost anything and he's getting worse. Most of the time the issue seems to be that he either wants food or water first and if he doesn't get the one he wants right away, he refuses to do anything until the other is presented; the last few weeks he's been getting both at the same time & just refusing all but maybe 2 or 3 bites of food & he hasn't finished a small bowl of water in 3 days, but he runs from his food to go find crumbs and old gunk in random little crevices like under the fridge. There's nothing medically wrong as far as I'm aware, he's just way too stubborn.
Today I decided to try putting him in his crate with a bowl of water, a bit of his normal food & some people food to try to fatten him up (doubt it'll work since I only make vegetarian food, but I'm hoping the rice in it will help.) Is there anything else I can do to break him from his stubbornness before he starves himself to death?

I've never even heard of a dog doing this before so I don't expect answers directly related to this issue, but anything that might help would greatly be appreciated, especially if it helps him not be so horribly stubborn.

Ok, thank you  :::grins:: I'm still going to be a bit nervous about it for a while, but the worst I've noticed is one of the youngest girls is bloated a bit & one of the older boys is looking a little more tired than usual so hopefully after a little extra care they'll be back to normal.
