General Chat / Lump on Doodle's side
« on: April 04, 2017, 05:08:08 PM »
Hi all;
Every now and then, when I'm scritching Doodle's left side (between his front and back legs, right around his ribs), I feel a strange little lump that I can't see because of the thickness of his fur. Of course, it doesn't help that he won't sit still to let me check it, but when I touch it, he doesn't mind; it doesn't seem to hurt him at all. When he was a few months old, I found a large mole in his ear, which a vet determined to be benign. He also has birthmarks on his reproductive organs, and possibly on his feet, too. However, only the ear mole is raised. Given his history of birthmarks and moles, should I just assume that this odd little lump is another mole? It's been there forever!

Is white maple safe for chins?

I thought so too (I'm the friend Trent was speaking about). If she is about four months old, how much weight should she be gaining every week?

Is KD southern yellow pine safe? Or only white pine? Because I can't find any KD white pine on Home Depot's or Lowe's websites. They do have KD untreated yellow pine, though.

Q & A / Bird toys?
« on: March 15, 2016, 09:09:05 PM »
Hi all!
My favorite chinchilla supplies website is down (TJ's) because the owner is sick. In the meantime, I was hoping to order toys for Doodle elsewhere, and I came across abirdtoy.com, which sells toy parts that are the same as you'll find in any chinchilla supplies store. I was wondering if I can safely assume that a pine block sold for birds is treated the same way so that it'll be safe for chins, too? Some of the product descriptions say they're chin-safe, but I wanted to double-check.
Also, I thought some of the other items sold on the site were interesting. There's coconut husks, pine cones, bamboo, natural cork, hemp rope, coconut fiber, banana leaves, and palm leaves. I was wondering if any of these items are safe for chins. Thank you all :)

I can't seem to post a new thread for whatever reason... but I did want to ask if Rice Krispies (or any plain puffed rice cereal; I have the one from Trader Joe's, which I find to be generally less full of chemicals) are an acceptable treat for chins.

Cages / Re: Looking to buy a new cage
« on: July 14, 2015, 08:25:22 AM »
GrayRodent, thank you for your advice! I am considering making my own shelves, but I'm not sure from where to order the KD pine. Is yellow pine okay?
As for the gauge of the cage, as of right now, we still have the super pet multilevel ferret cage (the purple and green plastic one... Yuck!!!). I'm wondering if anyone knows the gauge of the wire used in that cage, because we have had problems with wire snapping off and I'd like to ensure that I'm buying a thicker wire.

Also, is Elmer's wood glue truly safe?
Thanks again :)

He's doing really well! :) He's super annoying as usual and always tries to eat my textbooks, but we've bonded even more than ever. Sometimes he sits on my shoulder now and just happy-chirps in my ear.

Unfortunately, I can't do any woodworking- I live in Manhattan :( I was thinking of purchasing premade shelves.
One of the problems I have with Doodle's cage now is that the wire is so flimsy... What gauge should I look for in a cage?

Cages / Looking to buy a new cage
« on: June 16, 2015, 07:11:27 AM »
Hi everyone, I've been absent here for awhile-- I started college recently and have been too busy to check the forums :(  I'm looking to purchase or make a new cage for Doodle, but as I live in New York City and am completely ignorant of woodworking techniques, the building my own cage thing may be a problem. so I was thinking-- what if I buy a large metal frame and add in wooden shelves? Does anyone have experience with that?

Hi,
I live on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. There's a Banfield hospital here:
632 Broadway
New York, NY, 10012

They charge $80 for a check-up, and I think a vet there has a chinchilla of her own.

He wasn't rejected though. He just isn't thriving.
