Health / Chinchilla not acting right during playtime
« on: October 20, 2009, 08:22:18 PM »
Alright we had our new chin, who has never had a wheel and as far as we can tell play time, out for about 20 minutes. She ran around a bit, was curious and climbing on us but suddenly started acting strange. Her ears flattened back some and she started leaning to one side, when we went to check on her she started to move but her back legs where thumping the ground very fast and she was running lop sided. When we got her, which wasn't hard and her actions reminded me of someone who was drunk, she was very calm and just layed in our arms.

Now, we were starting to panic but noticed her body seemed a bit warm so we first grabbed some ice packs, wrapped them, and set her in the carrier we had with them around. She seemed to just lean against them and lay there. She is back to her perky "gimme treats" self but this really worried us. Do you believe it could have been heat related? We keep her area around 68 to 70 and try to keep watch on her. We are going to be taking her to the vet soon, setting appointment tomorrow, but wondered what possibly it could be. She kept moving running from us when we tried to get to her to check her and it really freaked us out. Normally if we hold her she squirms for a moment but she literally just layed there looking at us moving her head sometimes.

Hmm, I really need to learn to split these up...

Health / Re: whitish discharge all over cage

We saw her licking and a little swollen on Sunday and took her to the vet. She passed on Thursday but for us it was a bit overweight and they had to do surgery on ours. I say take her in, let them know what's going on so they can work on getting her better.

Do not take how mine died into consideration as she has problems with change that was unhealthy and ours spiked a 105 fever after surgery which lead to her death. All chins respond to treatments different so just show your love and support for her and if she has to stay visit her the next day.

You need to take your chinchilla to the vet ASAP. I just lost a chinchilla to the exact same thing and did not catch it in time. It is an infection and ours turned out to be an infection in the uterus. I strongly recommend you take your chinchilla in ASAP.

Memorials / Silver passed away last week...
« on: July 05, 2009, 01:25:28 AM »
I am posting to inform Silver, the chinchilla in my profile pic, passed away at 1:30 PM on thursday, July 2nd, 2009 due to heart failure after a difficult surgery and a fever over 2 days. She developed (and this is best I can remember, I still am having issues looking at her paperwork, Pyometra. After surgery she spiked a 105 fever for a bit, she didn't tell us exactly how long, and the doctor was concerned the day before. We went up there and she looked sick and not feeling well and wasn't moving around much but was cudling up to us some after the doc pulled her out. The next morning we got a call that she seemed a bit more aware, her fever was down and controlled, and that she just seemed more lifelike but when they pulled her out at around 1:00 to 1:15 her heart just stopped. They tried to restart it for over 15 minutes but found they could not and called home at 1:30 to let us know.

I am posting this as a way to say good bye to her as I was not able to really do it. This is so hard to do and I am having trouble seeing the monitor through the tears.  ::cry222:::

We loved her so much and miss her greatly. She brought joy and fun into our lives and was the nicest most well behaved chinchilla we have ever seen. My parents and I are having her cremated and put into a little urn to keep and preserve her memories for us. Our other Chinchilla, Amy, is going through noticeable depression but she seems to still be eating and doing everything normal, just not really wanting to be messed with.

I hope that she is giving God a few laughs and being entertaining and soothing for people in the afterlife like she did here for all.

Q & A / Temper Tantrum
« on: September 21, 2008, 12:42:32 PM »
Alright, Silver our first chinchilla started throwing temper tantrums almost a year ago and they would last for a minute or two and then stop. Recently she is throwing them for over 30 minutes at a time throwing stuff out of the cage, pushing the other one around (literally) and biting at everything that gets near her. I am posting this because I do worry about the other one getting to close and getting hurt, Amy usually stays away, and wanted to find out if you guys know how to stop it.

It typically happens when we open the cage doors and put food in, or pick her up and put her back, or anything that revolves around opening the doors and not letting her out. We can't let her out every time we open the door but want to curb this some.

Any suggestions?

General Chat / Re: Chinchillas on a Hallmark card?!?!?!

It would be something an admin would have to do if it is able to be setup on these forums. I use PHPBB3 and can do it with a little work but I am not sure with these.

Alright, another update now that the site is back up (Anyone know what happened?).

Amy and Silver have been out together for about 2 weeks and there have been no fights. Amy loves to groom Silver, she always works on the face first, and there is no noises until Amy works on Silver's ears then silver gives her a little bark and amy stops. Silver will tilt her head and everything for amy to groom and they touch teeth several times. They ran into the same small cage, we have it with a water bottle and so they have a place to pee instead of the carpet, and silver climbed up onto amy and started to groom her head once and hasn't since. I am not sure other then dominance why she always climbs up on her but wonder when they stops, I have double and triple checked and they are female and 2 vets agree. Any suggestions for more to try to make sure they will be compatible? We left them alone for a bit with a radio set to transmit to us so we could hear anything happening to see how they would do out of sight and no sounds were heard and no blood or slipped fur when we got back.

That is all I have right now, any suggestions or comments are always appreciated and I hope everyone has a good day.

Yea, she is back to her overly hyper self again. The limb doesn't seem to hurt her as much anymore as she uses it to help hold things and grow has grew back on it. She's as happy as she can be also and has regained alot of her balance and jumping height, despite how much we had hoped her jumping abilities might have gone down. It's not funny when your chin height proof fence, the one that keeps out the pudgy silver, Amy can jump over easily. Going to attach a picture if I can so people can see her, this is recent.

Saw it and voted. I wouldn't mind seeing that card in the stores, I would buy a few to send out for birthdays.

Currently 6%, highest being 9% for some cat that looks fake. We really need everyone on the forums to vote, maybe set this as a global announcement so everyone can see and maybe vote? :-)

Hmm, both being dominant I am not sure is a case. Amy only seems to get aggressive when you try to stop her from doing something she REALLY wants to do. Silver has jumped on Amy 2 or 3 times but has never tried to bite her, has scared Amy half to death causing fur slippage but never bite. Sometimes I have seen them side by side and amy is grooming her working from the middle of the head down her side and back till silver just kind of hops off and they go there own little way for a bit before touching noses. They turned there heads once and looks like there mouth's touched or teeth or something but didn't get a good look and they kind of hopped off after. Is this a good sign? I saw somewhere where they recommend leaving them alone for a short period of time, maybe with a web cam or something to watch from another room, to see how they react? Is that recommended?

As stated they do well, Silver will sometimes seem to go after amy and amy just runs off then comes up and will nudge Silver some. Not sure if Silver likes her or not but hasn't tried to bite her or really hurt her.

Thanks for the advise! This is helpful and I hope they take up, Amy is such a good little girl and loves everyone and Silver.....well she's a spoiled little princess. My father has spoiled her rotten lol.

Alright, now that Amy is better and able to run around like she used to we decided to let them out together with a twist this time. Amy has had the dining room to herself for the past week or 2 and has been enjoying herself. We decided to introduce them in Amy's space since Amy has been non dominent (except towards us, strange) and so far it seems to be somewhat working. They arn't biting at each other though Silver tried to mount Amy (or it looked like it, she started to climb up on Amy's back and they are both female) but otherwise didn't do much to eachother. When they sat together for an extended period Amy seemed to groom Silver which we thought was good, is any of this a good sign? Is the "mounting" a bad sign that needs to be stopped?

Thank you all for your support and compassion to this annoying soul.

« on: February 22, 2008, 06:17:59 AM »
Tuesday they removed the soft funnel from around her head and she is now back to her normal self. She is SUPER hyper and really wants out but we are told we can't let her out until tuesday or thursday to make sure nothing goes wrong. She wants to see everyone and god help you if you open her cage door. She jumps on it and tries to get away forcing you to grab hold of her, carefully, and give her a gentle hug before stuffing her back in the cage. She is eating and drinking like she used to, which is ALOT of food and water.

Thanks

She's still pooping, and later that night I went up at around 11:00 to check on her again,  I was downstairs reading on suggestions, she was wide awake and hopping around the best she could and was eating pellets from my hand. She won't touch the water bottle but I was able to get some water into her by letting her drink it from a water bottle cap. She lapped it dry several times and I checked her to see if any water got into her fur. This morning she was alert and ate some soupy critical care, 2 syringes full, and even wanted to get out to hop around. I am thinking that maybe she was still feeling sick from where they had to put her out to do the surgery? They said she is up and about but the pain medicine seems to be making her a little sleepy. They are in contact with the vet right now and said I will be called when they find out what is happening. Thank you.

Ok I do not know what is going on now. This morning she ate, let us pick her up and everything, I come home and they said she refuses to eat, she took the medicine but is just laying in the same spot, they say, for the past 4 hours. She looks so pathetic and depressed I don't know what to do. My mom says she got a little bit of food into her but she won't drink from her bottle or eat anything. I don't know what to do and the vet is closed right now. We have tried to mix a little apple juice with the water to see if she would want it and she turned it down. She whimpers and rubs her teeth at us when we try to give her food or anything. I don't know what to do, I don't want her to be in pain, I would take the collar off but I know she would bite at the wound, and I am scared she might die at this rate. Please, any suggestions, I have never had to deal with a chin that lost a limb before. Any suggestions would be great, I will try anything right now.

Hah, that would be great. A little buy and the chin sitting staring at the TV. I turned it on and slowly flipped through the channels this morning to see what was on so I could watch before I went to work and I got to the news and she hopped to the front and sat there watching, they were showing the weather and talking about stories over the night etc. I think she might also like the news O_o, strange chin. Anyway, she is hopping around this morning a little, the soft neck thing is about 3 inch's long around her neck, any suggestions on making it a little smaller? She is having trouble moving around her small cage due to it being long enough that even her back legs sometimes catch on it.
