Health / Hair Rings Driving Me Crazy!!?
« on: October 20, 2010, 01:09:05 PM »
My 3 year old Standard Grey male, Luigi is always getting hair rings!! I'm talking at least once or twice a week.

We took him to the vets for the first 5 or 6 times so she could show me how to do it myself because it was £22 a time. Which as you can imagine was expensive but i had to make sure i confident enough and ready to do it myself. I wouldn't want to hurt my boy.

So every week now we have to hold him and get it out, all out. I double if not triple check. He's really settled down and got used to it, but everywere i've read, there not as common as Luigi gets them.

So i have a question:

Could it be because he's in a cage with a Female Ebony, Rayne? Now they started as a breeding pair, but she's never fell pregnant (we weigh her every week and she has monthly vet checkups), they're simply the best of friends, but i'm wondering if he's trying to have his way maybe, but just failing to impregnate her or she's not having it? Hence weekly rings?

Hope that's enough info for somebody to help.

Thanks

Breeding 101 / Re: How Do I Know If My Chinchilla Is A Sapphire Carrier??
« on: October 18, 2010, 01:54:26 PM »
My girls all have pedigree certificates with show backgrounds, as far back i can get.
I don't think i can find any flaws look wise, they are all nice bulky girls, big ears, my beiges eyes are a lovely shade of red, the only thing i could fault is my ebony looks slightly mousy if that makes sense.

My boy is again a lovely size and he's fairly dark but still with a white belly, but i've been speaking to another breeder by me, and he said he could sell me a quality standard he's had from america. He's used him before and said the kits have come out beautiful. He's offered him to me for £60. Is this what i should be going for more than mine, or is this guy having me on?

My brown velvet has recently gone with this breeder into pairing with a beige. Was i right to say yes to this? The beige is a show winner and i've seeen his pedigree certificates and theres a mixture of standards, beiges, wilson whites and brown velvets.

We've also been offered a pink white girl for breeding. I know twi whites cannot be bred together likewise two ebonys, wo would she be better to breed with a standard?

I've always thought the standards have the best genetics.

Breeding 101 / How Do I Know If My Chinchilla Is A Sapphire Carrier??
« on: October 17, 2010, 08:19:40 AM »
My Standard Grey Male Luigi Is Also A Sapphire Carrier.

We've Got 4 Females, Rayne - Dark Hetero Ebony
                              Evie - Beige
                              Caya - Brown Velvet
Gracey - White Mosiac (Sapphire Carrier)

We are planning to breed with Caya as she has had kits before with previous owner and is more experianced than my other two younger girls.

When the kit/is is/are born how do i know if the babies will be sapphire carriers like daddy? Can i advertise them as Sapphire carriers?

And if future plans lead to breeding with Gracey, is there a possibility of sapphires since there both carriers?

All confusing with genetics and mutations. I love the colours but i want to make sure my chinchillas are safe and healthy and not create problems by inproper breeding.

Hope you can help!

Q & A / Chinchilla Seasons
« on: September 23, 2010, 12:33:07 PM »
Do Chinchillas have seasons?

I've been on a variety of websites, some say they do, once a month, other say nothing at all.
How do i know if my female is in season, are there any signs? Or can they just get pregant all year round, and just watch my male very carefully a bit whilst he's with my females.

So i thought i'd ask the best, you guys :)

Any help much appreciated

Q & A / Re: My Chinchilla Hates My New Chinchilla =(
« on: September 21, 2010, 03:42:48 PM »
Luigi is not neutered atm, we have discussed it but we've also discussed breeding from him as he's handsome lad. :)

Atm we keep a really big close eye on them both because i've read about her not being ready til 10 months which i still wouldn't feel comftable with.

Luigi and her are separated at night but and during the day they have around 2 hours together, were we watch them with a very close eye and try and introduce her to Rayne again. There are 3 - 4 of us watching out for any funny business and i it won't be happening yet!! :)

We hoped Rayne would smell Grace on Luigi and learn from smells and seeing her she's just a baby and won't harm her. But Rayne sits on her hind legs and sprays. Its more upsetting she's started on Luigi.

And i was hoping puttin Grace in her own cage for the rest of her life would be a the really last option, i hate seeing chinchillas on there own. There usually such social creatures :(

Q & A / My Chinchilla Hates My New Chinchilla =(

I have 3 beautiful chinchillas.

Luigi was my first, then i introduced him to my 2nd Rayne and within 2 - 3 days they were inseparable.

Now my 3rd Grace, is loved by Luigi he sleeps with her, plays with her, generally watches out for her, but Rayne despises her.

At night they take it in turns to sleep with Luigi and the other goes into a cage very close by so they can here and smell each other.
During they day they take it in turns to play with Luigi running around the bedroom.

Grace is fine and just sits and sleeps alot atm (she's 13 weeks) but Rayne has set her sights on her for no apparent reason.

We're taking each day as it comes, we'll hold them up to each other. Try and let them sand bath together, too which Rayne also despises and refuses to go near.  Let them run around, but as soon as Grace crosses her path, Rayne chases her and pulls clumps of her fur out which is upsetting for Grace and us that there nto getting on.

This has gone on for around a week now, with no signs of improvement on Raynes side.

Even Luigi has started sticking up for Grace, to which Rayne replies by attacking him.

Help? :(
