Herd Management / Re: Another cage cleaning question....
« on: January 05, 2007, 08:54:59 PM »
Ok, well I only scrub pans down once a month. If their particularly bad I'll give them a spray and cleaning, but most often I do a rotation and each cage gets a scrubbing once a month. We have 7 larger cages, 4 smaller cages and 2 runs that we use, so three weeks I'll scrub 3 of the larger cage pans and one of the smaller, the 4th week I'll do the runs and the remaining small cage. Pans get a good scrub with antibacterial soap and warm water, rinsed with hot water, then dried thoroughly.

43, 51 and 47 :P Yes, very nice weights, it was pretty much all baby weight too that mom put on, I though for sure she was going to give us either a big single or twins at best. Needless to say she surprised me :D All three have gained 4-6g already and doing very well!

They are all Females Jo Ann, so they'll definately be staying.

Conformation and Quality / Re: Developing your eye

I wish I had a closer breeder to really mentor, everyone is further away. I use every opportunity I can though to talk with the long time ranchers.

The last 2 shows I've gone to I've taken to talking with the judges after the show and even bringing my animals up to discuss things with them about the specific chin. I'm getting there, but still lots of stuff to pick up. I notice it gets a little better every time.

I was quite proud of myself last weekend though. I was looking through chins, and the only thing I really wanted was a dark standard male, and I had come across one that really caught my eye, and kept going back to him, he ended up being the Champ Male of Show (and coming home with me...haha) I really surprised myself, I know part of it was dumb luck as I know my eye isn't that great yet, but like I mentioned it's getting there.

General Breeder Chat / Re: Average size of males you use for breeding?
« on: October 26, 2006, 09:06:07 PM »
I don't so much look at size as the quality. We've really cut back on our males, and have just about gotten where I'd like to be with the males we are actually using in breeding. One of the males we have isn't on the biggest side, but he's got very nice clear/blue color, good fur strength/density and very nice conformation, I've only had him on one female who has size (and other good qualities, just the biggest emphasis on the size for him), which is what he is lacking. We ust got their first litter, so we'll see how that pairing does.

Oh My!! That is just the cutest little thing!! I didn't know Poms came in that color!! I've only ever seen the creamy/tan ones...Thats just way to much cuteness for one little critter!

Thanks everyone!! I'm just smitten with these babies, they are just so sweet and adorable!! They come right up to me when I go near the cage and snuggle my hands when I'm messing in the cage.

This is the first litter from this pair, so I'm excited to see how they turn out. Mom got 2nd at '04 MCBA Nat'ls, Dad got a 1st at the MCBA Midwest back in February. All 3 will be staying here for a while so I can see how they mature.

New Births / Squishy Fluffy Goodness!!
« on: October 25, 2006, 11:13:46 PM »
So this morning I woke up and had recalled dreaming that two of my girls had given birth. One had given birth to 3 babies (I don't recall the colors in my dream though) and the other had given birth to 2, but for some reason we lost them. I was in a bit of a rush so I only had time to do a quick peek into the chin room before I had to rush off, so I either missed these or they were born after I left/before I got back...about a 3 hour span.

We haven't had a mosaic female born for some time, so we'll be holding these girls for a while! Of course my other girl didn't have any today...

S23 Mosaic Female

S24 Standard Female

S25 Mosaic Female

Parents are Indago [standard] (Country Hearth Chinchilla) x Unnamed [mosaic] (Miller Chinchilla)  --She was 1 day early on having these little beauties! Her official due date was the 26th.

Oh goodness, we have 28 (at the moment) chins, 4 cats and 2 conures that share our home. My Nanday is currently sitting in her rope ring toy facing the wall talking to herself  ::shrug:: She says Step Up, No, Kiss, Hello as well as Wolf Whistles and gives kisses. All of which she's currently muttering to herself.

So I realized I joined and just kind of jumped in feet first. I was a member previously but I'm not sure what happened to my account  ::shrug:: Must have gotten deleted with the upgrades I assume.

A little about me. I'm 24 years old and I live in East/Central Minnesota with my Husband. We are owned by a herd of 30 (+/-) Chinchillas, 4 cats and 2 birds. We've been "into" chins for 3 1/2 years and breeding for about 2 1/2 of those. About our herd, we focus mainly on whites, though we have a couple others in the mix just for variety. We are active members of the MCBA Midwest Chapter (look forward to the show in a couple weeks)

Look forward to browsing aroudn here! I tend to be a bit of a lurker, but I do read, it's great to see new and differing opinions. Or just to learn something new that may have not been known before.

I have both a male and female white available. The male has been a breeder for some time, but has a great personality. The female is one of his daughters. What sex are you looking to add? I'm located in the Duluth area in MN, but will be going to the Midwest show in IA the weekend of the 21st and could set up to meet somwhere along the way. Feel free to contact me. info@chinchillarave.com

Both can be seen on our sales page
