They're not due until late August. I'd like to keep her with her man until later in the Summer. Otherwise he'll get depressed.

Quick Question..... about how far along in the pregnancy does she start GAINING WEIGHT? I weighed my little gal yesterday, and she hadn't gained a single gram. Is there anything specific I should be feeding her outside of the usual pellets and hay?

So I visited a Petco today, and noticed a sign on a chinchilla cage stating that according to New Mexico Law, they could NO LONGER sell chinchillas in pet shops. I asked one of the employees if she knew WHY, and she said it had to do with import & export, and endangered species.... apparently they are considering certain animals endangered now, and chinchillas are amongst them! Not sure if it's just in New Mexico or nation wide, or what ...... but could be good news! Means people will HAVE to go through a breeder to get a hold of them now, and for breeders that means you can potentially make more money off them.
Anyone see/hear anything about this in your area?

I have a nice chin spin wheel in the cage with my 2 .... neither of them really runs in it. But they like to sit in it. Especially when I give them a treat...they snag it & run to the wheel, then sit in it to eat.

My male and female have been together for 2 weeks now... but she wasn't letting him "have his way" with her. I figured it was the season... read they don't breed between May and Octoboer...(although I WAS informed that's not always true.
Well last night.... 4:30 am to be exact... my male was making a lot of noise, sounded like a chicken bawking. I saw him mount the female, and then later when I got out of bed (around 7am) I found a mucus plug where they had been. At least I think that's what it was...it felt like wax when I touched it. But obviously there is no wax in or around their cage. So I can only assume it was her plug.
.....guess we'll see in a hundred days of so, huh?
Is the chicken sound normal? It didn't sound like his usual mating call. At first I almost thought he had hiccups.

Thanks everyone. This chin has clogged tear ducts as well... so I'm not that surprised. I've been using some drops the vet gave me, and he seems to be doing much better.
Now I've noticed their roles have reversed....instead of him chasing her around all the time...SHE is chasing him! They're really cute together though.

Hmm... nevermind. It seems he has opened it back up this afternoon and it looks fine. There is a small amount of white goop, but otherwise it looks perfect. Weird.

Last weekend I moved my female into the same cage as my male. They had been side-by-side for 3 months and getting along well at playtime. The first day or 2, he was really interested in mating, but she wasn't all that interested.
Then I started noticing his left eyes squinting....now, a week later, it's basically sealed shut. His right eye looks fine. And he's eating/drinking/pooping/gaining weight NORMAL. He seems happy & playful as usual.
I can only assume in her attempts to keep him from mating she must have scratched his eye and now it's basically "swollen shut" (although it doesn't appear to be puffy or red....just shut).
Is this common?
Should I leave him alone and allow it to heal on it's own?
Do I need to clean it & put some eye drops? (I did this last night)
Or do you think I need to have him see a vet about it?

Chinchillas are tough to keep in some ways (with the temp needs and special diet and required free run, hard to find vets, delicate systems, etc etc)... BUT besides the fact that they are SUPER CUTE and SUPER SOFT....they are very SMART. They can build really strong bonds with humans. They can be very entertaining! It's also a unique pet, which makes it a unique experience. It makes for good conversation too....anyone who finds out I keep chinchillas is full of questions about them. Makes ya feel kind of special.

The one I got was for ferrets ... but they also had them for rats...which would probably work for a younger/smaller chin. The ferret one I have was on the smallest and almost too big.... but I have little chins. (under 500 grams)

I'd go with the Ferret Nation, personally.
the other one has too much plastic in it!
You should also remove all the ramps from either cage. Chinchillas don't need ramps, they just JUMP.
You can buy wooden ledges to replace the plastic ones if you go with the 1st cage.
If you go with the ferret nation, you will either need to remove or cover the plastic trays.
I have the FN cage, and I removed the center separater...installed a bunch of wooden ledges...and I cover the bottom tray with fleece blankets as bedding. That works well for me. You'll have to decide what works best for you!

Since this photo I have removed the plastic ledges in the smaller cage & replaced them with wood ones because she was chewing the plastic. Luckily she hasn't tried to chew the wheel yet, hopefully she can be moved into his cage before she attempts that! hehe).

Health / It was his teeth...

Dewey spent the day at the vets office yesterday. He had his mouth checked out....apparently his teeth are so bad, they were growing in all directions. Including one tooth growing to the side & poking the inside of his cheek (causing a wound with puss in it).
The vet had to trim & file down ALL his teeth. He's still on the Oxbox Critical Care & now on Baytril as well (to cure an infection in one of his teeth). We're going back in a month to do x-rays and make sure no teeth are fractured below the gum line...otherwise they have to come out!
Vet said this was caused by bad feeding when he was younger (when I didn't have him) ...and that it's SO important chins get water filled greens & roughage because he see's this problem all the time in chins that only get hay & pellets. *shrugs*
