Thanks Jason,

Do you have a link for the IKEA wheel?

Hi all.

I'm wondering about getting a chinchilla wheel. I've read conflicting things about whether they are good for chinchillas backs or not. What is your opinion on them?

Thanks

Thanks Gray,

Maybe we will scale back a bit then. We've had her six months so it's a bit sad to think she has not relaxed into the flat yet. She doesn't exactly hide on us but stays in the cage because she knows we may try and  lift her if she comes out.

Our chinchilla just hates being held and hides from us now after we have lifted her a few times.

We're having the same problem at the moment. Our chinchilla is getting into a habit of biting hard so I think I may try this method. Because she was sick a lot a few months ago and the experience traumatised her a bit, we havent been handling her very much these days. Anytime we have tried to hold her she goes crazy much in the same way as described above.

Her floor is currently on the ground but we will be getting her a cage on legs soon so will need to be able to lift her in and out.

It all sounds very serious but she seems very active and happy (when we aren't trying to catch or burrito her to give her medicine / clean her eye etc) so I'm not too sure what the outcome will be. I am now thinking it might be a synus infection as I've seen a few posts on this site that had similar symptoms and that's what it turns out was wrong. Could explain the effect on the ear eye and nose? The lameness is restricted to her head only, her body and legs on both sides seem to be fine.

We'll let you know how it goes.

Going to take her to vet again tomorrow. We decided to give her a small bath an same thing happened eye got covered in sand. Think you might be right about it being a brain issue. She doesn't seem to be able to close her eye right and I've now noticed she only seems to be breathing out of one nostril too (everything on her left side of her head seems weak or limp).

Can chinchillas have strokes?

She has been blinking and closes it fully when she sleeps, is drowsy etc

Yeah her whiskers on that side don't seem to move, she is always grabbing them with her front paws though, as if she is grooming them but when her right whiskers are fluttering about as normal the ones on her left side are all bunched together and still.

She does twitch when I touch her whiskers on the bad side, it seems to tickle her as normal.

Hi guys,

Yet another health related question. I believe I may become a hypochondriac for my chin. My chinchilla had a sore eye on one side and we went to vets and got eye drops for her. Since then the eye has cleared up but anytime she has a bath now she gets sand caked over her eye. It seems to be weeping. We've stopped giving her baths altogether for the past week but the eye still appears weepy. On top of that, on the same side of her head her ear has remained permanently down and her whiskers don't seem to move on that side only.

Is this something serious? We've been having the worst luck recently.

Cages / Chinchilla Cage Feng Shui
« on: August 21, 2014, 11:26:54 AM »
Hi all,

I have a pretty basic Chinchilla and Degu cage and am always rearranging things to keep life interesting for the chin. She loves new things  ;)

Was wondering if anyone has any tips or suggestions for ways to enliven the cage. Homemade things to add etc. The plan is to get a much bigger cage down the line and add another chin. But in the meantime want to make the cage as interesting as I can for the crtter before she gets upgraded.

Final update. We went back to vets today for another follow up and everything has cleared up. Feet, eye and bum all back to normal. Its been an experience but Misty is healthy and we are a little the wiser about how she picks up these things, how often to give baths etc. If anything its been good to have to handle her so much. Thanks again for the advice and info!

Thanks mb, I think that is the same with Misty. She is a bit traumatised but still comes out of her cage every day so she mustn't hate us that much. Keeping a close eye on her so should notice any changes as they happen. Will let you know when she is right as rain.

P.S. finally figured out how to upload an avatar so here is a picture of the wee patient.

We gave her the last of her baytril there and then a syringe of water which she gulped down happily enough. That should be her ok now. Thanks again for the help Gray.
