Q & A / Re: grooming

Try the metal greyhound combs. A lot of people will use them to rough groom their chins, before using the actual chin combs.

Breeding 101 / Re: Babies in a multi-level cage
« on: September 14, 2006, 08:14:17 PM »
I have stopped moving my females, and leave them in the cages they've always been in and just pull the male.

Cages are 30 x 18 x36", with 3 shelves (one across the back, measuring 8" wide x 30" long), two across the sides , one below and one above the shelf across the back (18"long, 8" wide). I haven't had any problems as of yet with the kits, or moms ignoring them.

I'm located in Summit Hill, PA.

Jo Ann- I'm thinking of using the same contract I have for my rescues... It would pretty much be the same exact thing--no breeding, must be returned to me.

I'm not sure what you are going through--but I hope it all works out!!

I believe I heard talk about this last year...but haven't heard anything recently.

I do know blue cloud has increased price wise..perhaps this is why?

Q & A / Re: How big should the dust bowl be?

Plastic ones about the size of a shoe box,

I've been using the plastic Sterlite containers, they are the shoe-box size. They work great- and are cheap. They also come with lids, so it keeps the chins from kicking bedding into the dust while I store them :)

Q & A / Re: Chin Food
« on: September 02, 2006, 08:27:46 AM »
I've been told Tradition is fine for about 6 months. After the 6 months, the nutrition starts to wear down, and it's no longer as fresh, but can still be fed.

I'm using Tradition. When I started purchasing my chinchillas from the larger ranchers, I kept having to switch them off the tradition onto the mazuri. I figured in the end, instead of having to switch everyone over- I might as well just switch to the feed that the people I'm buying from use. The two breeders I tend to deal with the most use the same feed as I do, so now I don't have to worry about having to switch the animals over.

I've been considering mixing a high-quality rabbit food into their mix, though. Simply because I need to get my feed twice a year- Once in ohio(8 hr drive), and once at the York Show.. and If I run out of tradition, it would be hard and expensive to get it to me.. With two different feeds going, I would have a "back up" incase I did get low on one feed.

Breeding 101 / Re: Mates

I like to give my females a break. If they have two litters a year, they get around a 6 month break. This means no contact at all with their male. I figure I wouldn't want to be breeding like crazy, having baby after baby- so why would she?

A lot of people think their chins will be so depressed, and they won't get over it. Most of the time this isn't the truth. They get over it in a few days, and are back to normal. If this is one of your concerns- Perhaps hold back two kits? Keep a female in with mom, and a male in with dad? This will give each of them some company while mom rests up.  How long are you leaving them seperate? Sometimes we just have to be tough... The last thing you want is for mom to eventually get so worn out she can't care for her kits, it takes too much out of her etc and she gets sick or dies.

Cages / Re: Looking for a good cage
« on: August 30, 2006, 11:46:47 AM »
I still like my cages from http://www.martinscages.com . However, I do have similar cages to the ones at spoiled chins.

What we did though, was built a set of 6 right onto the wall, using 2 x 4's as a frame, and support system. They were nailed right into the walls of the chinroom. We then took the Melamine coated tileboard(Cheaper, and thinner then the boards) and used them for the outside of the cages. In the long run, it was cheaper then the regular melamine cages.
