New Births / Questions about my baby chinchilla
« on: September 11, 2011, 10:04:20 PM »
I was wondering, how do I get closer to my baby Chinchilla. he is about 6 weeks old now.
and grouchy like his Mom. but he is sweet. I was wondering why he gets a little upset, and squeaks and yells when I
try to pick him up. given the fact I am careful when trying to get him.

how long will it takes to get him use to me. I have been petting him for a few weeks now.
The mother chinchilla lets me. she takes good care of him.
I am thinking when I get the money to buy another cage to seperate him from his parents.

Awwww...Congrats..Enjoy the little furrball and spoil him rotten!  :::grins::

I just love that little critter. my other ones from last year never made it. so I keep my eye out on this one alot. whats weird is he like the little cool breeze we have been getting, and I have been trying to keep him from getting too much cool air. I guess they hate heat like I do. they can only stand so much of that.

i am so sorry the baby had died. but. a few pointers given you've got two more.

1/ 5 day old baby should not be able to get onto a shelf. either have a single level cage or have the shelves high enough so only adults can get up.
2/ do not ever let other animals have access to your chins when you're not there and if you are there, only if you know what they're going to do - i.e., your dog eats chinchillas, do not let him anywhere near them ever! i have three dogs and one of them is an ex-racing greyhound, he would kill them without thinking about it before you could intervene. that's why they're in a locked room he can't get into.

I would of never left the baby alone, I would of thought of something better like, dogs should be outside. I dont trust mine either. and I dont trust cats. course mine that are left dont care and not wild. I feel bad that you lost your baby, how long has it been since you lost the chinchilla. and did you ever get a picture of the baby.

That's not good to leave dads with moms right after birth. The females are in heat so mark you calender for the next litters.
Congrats on the babies. ::bouncyball::I hope you get enough cages for the Nov. births.Breed backs are very taxing on the females. One doesn't usually cause too much problems, though you might want to increase their calcium. ::nod::

how do you give them calcium, no less than add more.

he helps her with the baby. is that strange or what?

General Chat / Re: How do I prepare my room and cage for the winter
« on: September 05, 2011, 03:37:11 PM »
Babies can jump and climb.  What I mean is that in the first few hours they are still very wobbly.  Its easy for mom to jump up to higher shelves and the babies not be able to follow correctly.  A runt especially may not be able to follow.  It is in those first hours they are most likely to die of cold.

On a side note: Its important to remember that new babies do not have good coordination. If you have newborns in a cage with shelves they could fall and get hurt.  Newborns don't land on their feet like older chinchillas do.

I knew what you meant sweety, and mine is older than a newborn. I think he is now a month old. and he is so sweet and lovable.

What sort of cage do you have them in and how cold do you think their room gets? Is there a warmer interior room you could move them into?  It is very important that chinchillas in cold temperatures are right in the shavings not on a wire bottom cage.  They also need to be away from any drafts.  Drafts will cause respiratory infections which are often fatal.  Be sure there is a nice warm box they can get into.
I'm wondering if your cage might be too large for breeding.  If the female can get away from her babies for while she will.  Shelves can be vary dangerous because newborns can't figure out how to get up to mom.  If they are left in temps that cold for long they will die from the cold.  Our breeding cages are smaller and only one story so the babies can always cuddle up to mom no matter where she is in the cage.

my cage is not wire on the bottom, and it is wire all around besides plastic. when i get the
money I am getting a stronger one for them. on the answer to the baby that they cant handle shelves.
I must have a crazy bay, you say they cant jump. did you know my baby chinchilla has jumping since after he was born. he follows his momma everywhere. and I cant seperate the male and female chinchilla. they both freak out, and the male chinchilla protects the baby. its so strange, cause I thought your suppose to seperate them. I tried it last time, big mistake and thats why the female freaked out.

Chinchillas like cold.  My chinchilla building gets down into the upper 40s F in the winter.  They are on solid pans with shavings.  They give birth in this temperature and I have never lost a baby due to cold.  As long as you don't have cold air blowing on them (like from an open window or door) they will be fine.
letting you know that it gets colder than that here, and you did not answer my question yet hun. see my house is old. and i guess i will need to somehow clover the windows. and it got colder than 40 last year. i had room in right temperture but the babies last year that were born died. it was too much for them. thats the problem I will have again. I refuse to lose my new one. but he will be older than that by winter.
what can i do please help

ok hot topic, how do I keep my bedroom warm when winter gets here.
I dont have no heat but I can buy another heater, I need to know what temperture it should be
for my chinchillas.

I'm mainly think of the new baby who will be older by then, he is 3 weeks old now almost a month old.
my adult chinchillas seemed to love the cold air yet i kept them warm
is that unusal that they loved the cold air or what?

General Chat / Re: Does your chinchilla spill his/her food bowl
« on: May 14, 2011, 03:07:32 PM »
i'm often amazed at how strong they are! the coop cups that attach to the cage work so much better (although i must admit mine even manage to get the bowl out of the holder and tip it over every so often - nowhere near as much as when using an ordinary bowl)

I just so much love my babies, even though they arent babies. she had babies but they never did live
long. I ill make sure I have better cages next time. anyway when I bought the cage it had everthing I needed to
start with when you first get a chinchilla. I had them in something else before but it never did work.
so i bought them a cage.
as soon as I get the money I will et one,I know dr foster smith sells good stuff. and thanks for helping me out.

 I am having a problem with my sweet chinchillas, they seem to knock their food bowl over
on purpose. no matter what i give them. when food bowl is full they leave it alone. and they do eat healthy
food. i just want to know why are they do this? and how do i get it to stop.
i cant always keep the food bowl full. and the waste of the food kills me.
