Health / calcium deficient chins
« on: November 18, 2011, 09:27:02 AM »
Just wondering, for a chinchilla who is not getting enough calcium, is it better to give tums or cuttlebone? any other options and if so, how much? both my chins are very healthy and dont have a problem. i'm also curious if tums can be used as a preventative to teeth problems. I supplement vitamin c on a daily basis also.

Q & A / New Chinchilla. :)
« on: November 01, 2011, 04:55:51 PM »
As some of you know, I recently had to put down one of my two chins due to malo. As a result i noticed my other chin, Maisey seemed very lonely. So I did my research and ended up getting another chin from a breeder. she's a cute little girl, very petite, her name is trudy. she seems very shy and skittish, any tips on how to gain trust? and how to make her feel comfortable? also tips on introducing her to my maisey? right now they each have their own quality cage chin mansion and i have the connecter inbetween with the divider in. Maisey is a very dominant chin and trudy seems, like i said, very shy. Any info appreciated!

Thanks :)

Health / malocclusion
« on: September 29, 2011, 06:57:01 PM »
hi everyone,
a few days ago, i noticed that pika was drooling and had a very wet chin...and of course all i could think of was malocclusion. so i made a vet appointment and brought her in today. sure enough, i was right. my vet trimmed her teeth and checked the back molars too. I'm bringing her in for a followup on Tuesday and scheduled another appointment a month out for him to file them down again. do any of you have chins with malocclusion? what are your thoughts, she's young and i would hate to have her put down if she can still live a good life. and her sister would be completely heartbroken. opinions?
Thanks,
Morgan,pika and maisy  ::chinhappy::

North East USA / grey standard female chinchilla
« on: September 25, 2009, 07:42:27 PM »
hi everyone.....
i'm in the vermont area and i just recently took in a young female chinchilla from a coworkers daughter. unfortunately my chinchilla doesnt get along with her so i need to find a good home for her. she's been bounced around a couple of times so i want to make sure she goes to a home where she can settle in. i want her to get the love and time that she deserves. she would come with a cage but it is a little small for her size. i have her on mazuri food right now....i think she was on kaytee before so she deffinately needs to be on a high quality food. she is very sweet and personable, a little skittish, but with time she would be a great little companion. if your interested we can chat and meet up. i just really want her to go to a good home. you wouldnt have to pay a dime for her and i would even be willing to meet you!!!!

Q & A / hi everyone.....question?
« on: September 23, 2009, 05:24:38 AM »
hi there....
so yesterday i took in another chinchilla. she is 6 months old and grey.....her name is ming ming! maisy got very excited when i brought her into the room and was smelling around her cage at play time. they kept touching noses and whimpering, it was precious. the chinchilla came from a co-worker. it belonged to the daughter and was not being taken care of so i took it under my wing. i have noticed that her poops are a very light brown, almost a cream color....i'm wondering if this is from not getting the correct nutrients. when i got her there was no hay, alfalfa or cubes in the cage.....and no food. i put mazuri in her cage and she went crazy....eating nonstop. the poor thing was probably so hungry!!!!! she also drinks constantly, so i was thinking she was probably a little dehydrated too. i'm hoping after about a month of getting used to each other they will be able to be cagemates....i think maisy would benefit from that ::nod:: so anyways, now i have two gorgeous chinchillas. right now there cages are next to each other so that they can get used to each others scent, although maisy's cage towers above ming ming's cage. also when i got ming ming there was alot of plastic in her cage....shelves, ramps...etc which i immediately got rid of and chinchilla proofed it with wooden shelves and ledges (didnt have the money to shell out for a new chin mansion :::((( ) so my questions are.....what would cause her poops to be so light colored? and what can i do to make the transition smooth?......also i heard that some people give their chins vitamin c to boost their immune system.....what kind and how many mg/days? childrens chewables? i think im gonna start doing that.

General Chat / patches of hair...
« on: April 30, 2009, 10:55:41 AM »
Hi everyone.
I have been finding patches of hair randomly around maisy's cage, but i cant see any spots on her where hair is missing. is it normal for chinchillas to shed hair and whiskers once in awhile?

are the t-rex chubes safe for a chinchilla to chew. they are made of the vegetable parchment. is that ok, or could it cause blockages?

Health / loose stool/diarrhea
« on: February 19, 2009, 04:12:48 PM »
I've had my chinchilla (maisy) for about 3 weeks now. she's 5 months old. I've been giving her only one raisin a night and feeding her mazuri pellets along w/ timothy hay. just the other night i noticed that she had her poop smeared all over her shelves and they were very mushy. she's very active still, eating well. i havent given her raisins since but her stool is still very soft and is slimy. i know that sounds gross. what should i do?

also i did just transfer her over into her chinchilla mansion, could it be stress?
