Health / Re: Rat Poison!!!! :(
« on: November 08, 2011, 02:06:43 AM »
I do not wish to scare you off but you should keep a close eye on the chin for at least a week.
Rat poison usually targets the coagulation of the blood. Basically it causes clots, therefore it's a slow process. Keep him on vitamins and give him a lot of liquids.
Oh and keep him isolated from the other pets. You don't really want him to interract with the other pets untill you're 100% sure he's safe.

Are the regions mentioned completelly bald? Have you ever seen the chin actually bite the fur?
Have you considered a possible fungal infection?

Q & A / Re: How do I make weaning less stressful for the kits?
« on: October 10, 2011, 03:03:07 AM »
Place them together for a while, out of sight and out of "scent" from the mother. That's about it imo.
They don't need special treatment nor any special attention once they are weaned. Starting the 45th day (give or take a couple of days) of life their body temperature isn't mother dependent anymore therefore they can survive without the mother nearby.
Just make sure that they are eating solid food and drinking water and they're just fine.

Like every other mamal, he has sexual needs. Your leg looked like something that could be humped.

Q & A / Re: Odd Noise

Get used to that noise .. you'll probably hear it pretty often.
You can identify the noise here http://www.chinchilla-sounds.de/
It is assumed that they are dreaming/having nightmares sometimes so it's probably the sound that I assume you heard.

Q & A / Re: Um...kind of a strange question.

In my opinion it's not an option since their ribcage is quite easy to be damaged. Simply performing a heart massage could end up with several broken ribs or worse, a rib stuck in the lungs or any other nearby organ.

They are either playing or they are simply establishing a hierarchy.
I happened with my 3 kits as well... At 3 weeks old the biggest in weight was literally humping the other two.
Now he always eats first while the others two wait until he is done.
If you don't see any damage (fur balls flying around and if the kits are unharmed) you should not worry in my opinion.

Health / Re: Awkward GI problem
« on: September 26, 2011, 03:15:08 AM »
I guess I freaked out for nothing after all. It was probably the water intake the main cause of the soft poo.
After 12 hours from weaning the 3 kits her poo became hard as a rock \o/

Thank you again for all the tips!
Kind regards,
Vic

First of all, thank you guys for the replies!
To trim it: She still does the same shaped poos but being soft are sticking together, on the shelves and some end up in her fur or the babies'.
Some simply add up and end up looking like a big pile :D
It's not like diahrea (at least not like the human one looks :D )

I weaned the kits last night.. I will keep a close look on her and hope that it's only a kit/water intake problem.

I'm driving to Bucharest today with some business but I'll make a stop to the biggest pet shop store in the country to check maybe they have some Pectilin or some probiotics like dianah suggested.
If I'm not finding any I guess that I'm going to send you guys some money to have some shipped :D

Once again thanks for giving me a relief. I was quite paranoid when I saw her poo in the past two weeks.
I'll keep you updated.

Kind regards,
Vic

Health / Awkward GI problem
« on: September 23, 2011, 02:14:14 AM »
Hey there!
My female chin is having soft poo for over two weeks now. She didn't loose any considerable weight and anything that she lost she did put back in less than 48 hours.
In the first week I tried removing everything from her diet, keeping only fresh hay and alfalfa pellets considering that it might be a simple diet problem.
Well, it wasn't and her poo keeps having the same aspect/consistence.
Needless to say that it smells like a sewer :D
I took a poo sample to three vets but that didn't clear anything up... apparently no foreign bacteria or parasite has made his home in her GI system.
I am suspecting a lack of vitamin C which might affect her digestion.

Do you guys think at any other aspects that I should take into consideration? Should I consider a soft antibiotic?
If not, I'll probably give her an intramuscular shot with Vitamin C and a B complex.
IF it has any relevance: she is nursing 3 kits.

Thank you in advance!
Kind regards,
Vic

Separate them while they are feeding.

Q & A / Re: Mastitis?
« on: September 19, 2011, 04:48:32 AM »
The easiest way to check her out is to pick her by the tail (not the middle nor the end but right at it's beginning ... near the body) Keep her firmly and do not shake her neither let her agitate.
Keep her for a couple of seconds upside down and she will chill out. Then gently expose her nipples and perform a visual check. You can do that either with your hand or by blowing towards them to expose the teats.
I really don't know what the treatment may be based on since I never experienced it but I guess it's neither damaging nor traumatizing.

Best of luck to you!

Q & A / Re: New chin owner, some questions!
« on: September 12, 2011, 04:20:34 AM »
The person I got him from (found on kijiji.ca) was feeding them Great Value brand rabbit food, and gave me a small sample, so I'm mixing it with the stuff I got.

'nuff said.

Definitely go for a mixture of hay and pellets thrown here and there. As few as possible to be sure (10g/day and increase the quantity gradually). Just don't give him rabbit food as the potato head that you bought him from.
If you look of a contents list from the GV rabbit food you'll see the differences between a regular rabbit diet and a chinchilla diet.
Never buy food that is oriented to two different species (ie guinea pigs and chins)! Chins are really selective in food and two or more species oriented food will only put them a list of forbidden food on a plate which believe me they will eat first. Fat and sweet food should be avoided at all costs from their diet.

Offtopic question: what's the bedding made of?

Q & A / Re: Question about kits.

you'll easily know when to wean them: they'll start eating solid food more and more up to the point where both the kits and the mom will fight over it :D
Or you can simply wait 7-8 weeks and do it like the book says.
