hi everyone!
i just offered my chinny some banana and she made a face that looked like i was giving her something that was so bad it would kill her. she stuck up her nose and just looked at me.
do any of you guy's chins do this type of thing or do they like banana???
just wondering

They all like and dislike different things. I have one female who refuses to eat Cheerios, but loves Shredded Wheat. I don't see a huge difference between the two, but apparently she does. ???

::silly::Chinchillas have different personalities and tastes.
Most of mine like banana, fresh and dried, but not all.
Just like yogurt, some love it (I have one that actually cries for it) and others hate it. When they really hate it, they will turn round and round on their hind legs while trying to wipe it off their lips and fuss the whole time.
Some like papaya and some rose hips.
They show you appreciation by grinding their teeth and smacking their lips when they really like it. If they do not like it they can go from dirty looks to spraying you. :D

Steph,
That is so funny you say that because out of 31, I have only one who LOVES a very occassional nibble of fresh banana! When he eats it he pulls his lips back so far all you see is teeth, I am guessing he doesn't want any banana left on his mouth! He looks just like a Llama!!! The others do the face you were talking about and act like I am trying to poison them!

o yea and by-the-way, i took a cute picture of my chinny sitting on a gate in my dinning room. its funny how when ever we take her out she just sits up there and looks at everything she can see.

As long as they aren't frosted or anything like that. Just plain Cheerios are fine as a treat. Give them in moderation as with all other treats, of course.

I'm sorry, but I'm confused... Is there a difference between plain Cheerios and cheerios cheerios? ::think:: (I don't know all of the types and varieties of Cheerios that are available.)
-
dunno, is the chinchilla named Cheerio perhaps? thats how i gathered it anyway
-
:blush2: I think the chinchilla's name is "Cheerio". She wanted to know if she could give Cheerio the chin the cereal called Cheerios as a treat!

Funny
Cereals make great treats, just stick with the healthy, full of fiber, no sugar types.
I use cheerios, spoon size shredded wheat, in plain and bran, shreddies, and oatmeal.
Nothing with frosting, brown sugar, or cinnamon, stuff like that.

ok yea,i just gave my chin a dired cherry and she seemed to like it...
i am very happy that i found a different treat for her......we can now toss it up and she doesn't always have to have craisns. ;D

I would consider cherries to be a pitted fruit. Chinchillas should not be given pitted fruits or wood from pitted fruit trees. :::(((

Thanks AZ, I knew branches from pitted fruit trees were bad, but I didn't know about the fruit.
I would be worried about the pit, but if it's tried and the pit is gone????? New one for me.
Other dried fruits you can give in moderation are, papaya, apple, apricots, banana.....
I buy a different one every month and mix things up every few nights with sunflowers seeds, cereal, or oatmeal.
-
There's always a possibility of some of the pit being in the fruit, even if it is dried. I personally would not chance it when there are so many safer options available.

I agree 100%.
I've never given mine cherries, like has been said there are so many alternatives, good alternatives. ::thumbsup::
I avoid wet stuff for the most part, dried fruit is a very small part of their treats.
Besides I can get more time with them eating oatmeal out of my hand, one flake at a time. ;D

::shrug:: so i shouldn't give my chin cheerys anymore???? ::shrug::

Correct. Cherries are not an appropriate, safe treat for chinchillas.
