Title: Drug resistance to anesthesia due to frequent detal work
Post by: susansu on February 17, 2017, 11:35:20 PM
My poor chin girl got the genetic malocclusion she has to go for dental work for every 9 - 14 weeks.  She has done 11 times since 2014.  Now she has drug resistance and my vet has to use stronger narcotic ketamine.  I really worry what would happen if she continues increasing drug resistance.

I would like to know if there is any silmilar case like mine and if there is solution?  Thanks so much!

Susan

I've never heard of that before. Most veterinarians use isofluorane. Usually chinchillas with that kind of condition (malocclusion) will get worse and typically succumb to other complications.

Thanks Gray for reply.  My girl is still quite healthy the root are not overgrown.  I really do not want to give up.  I saw some posts saying with dental work chin with malocclusion problem can also live a long life...let me check and see if there is solution.  Thanks.

I hope and pray you'll find what you need. My first thought is wait until the resistance becomes dangerous and then use a different drug. My second thought is use less anesthesia and see how the animal handles it. I know of one chinchilla that just let the vet do the teeth without drugs because it was calm about it. It lived for years from what I've heard. Although such cases are extremely rare.

Aneth that often will kill her kidneys eventually. By the time you notice the teeth need done, the chin has been in pain for a while. THen the procedure plus recovery every 3 months... thats more than half the chins live in misery. Its really not fair to the chin to continue your current treatment plan. Any vet that willingly does dental work without aneth is going against the avma code of ethics and personally i wouldnt trust them

I agree with this. You are just causing more problems in the long run. There is only so much you can do before it gets to the point where quality of life is an issue. One of my rescues came to me with very very advanced Malocclusion. He was put down.  I am now freaked out that all of my rescue have it or will have it. I warn everyone that adopts them about it. After seeing how bad it can get when left untreated I understand you wanting to help your chin. There is only so much you can do. Just give your chin the best life you can and know your time with her might not be as long. That's what I do.
